Original application filed December 26, 1916, Serial No. 138,867. Divided and this application filed February To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD G. KING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bracelets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bracelets for example watch bracelets, of the expansible type and its object is to provide an article of this character which shall have firm and compact joints with a minimum of play or lost motion between the articulated members and at the same time be amply eX- pansive est possible interruption to the smoothness and continuity ofthe exterior surfaces of said members as well as generally to improve and simplify the construction thereof in the manner hereinafter set forth.
The present application, which is a division of my application Serial No. 138,867, filed December 26, 1916, shows two specific embodiments of my invention.
In the drawings which accompany and form a part of this application- Figure 1 is a horizontal longitudinal section of my improved bracelet taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal longitudinal section of a modification taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 4. Fig. 4; is a vertical longitudinal section taken on the line .lf-1 of Fig. 3.
In the particular drawings which I have selected for disclosing the principle underlying the two embodiments of the invention described herein, 1 represents an outer shell open at both ends and inclosing a tube 2, also open at both ends. To the upper interior surface of each tube at the rearward end thereof is soldered a base 3 provided with lugs 4: which form one element of the hinge connection between such tube and the next adjacent shell. The forward downwardly extending end 5 of the yoke shaped connecting member 6 is soldered to the lower interior surface of the forward end of each shell and constitutes the other element of the hinge, the two elements being pivotally connected as shown at 7. To provide a yielding connection between each outer shell and its inclosed inner tube, a spring 8 is interposed between the rearward and flexibly hinged with the small- Serial No. 216,251.

In the modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4: the hook 10 is soldered to the lower interior surface of the rearward end of the tube and the cooperating hinge member 11 provided with the aperture 12 for receiving said hook is soldered to the upper interior surface of the shell 1 at the forward end thereof. rIhe connecting member between a shell and its inclosed tube consists in this case of a yoke 13 of spring material terminating in oppositely curved end portions provided with recesses 141, the end of said connecting member being forced between the ears 15 which extend downwardly from the hinge member 11 and said recessed portions thereof snapping over said ears to secure the connecting member firmly in place. The spring 8 is interposed between the end of the connecting member and the lip 9 at the forward end of the shell.
In both cases each shell is hingedly connected with a tube by means of hinge members secured to the interior surfaces of the juxtaposed ends of shell is yieldingly connected with the tube inclosed thereby and the shell to the right thereof. By means of this construction a firm and compact joint between a shell and its cooperating tube is provided, said joint being concealed by the shell, and there is practically no play or lost motion between the articulated parts.
It will be understood of course that when my invention is applied to the watch bracelet several links will be removed and a watch attached to the end links in the usual manner.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various modifications may be made in the details above described without departing from the principle of my invention, the scope of which is defined by the appended claims:
1. A bracelet, comprising in combination a series of tubes, a series of shells each embracing a tube, hinge members secured to the interior surfaces of the juxtaposed ends of each tube and shell, and yielding connections between each hinge member and the next adjacent tube.
2. A bracelet, comprising in combination a series of tubes, a series of shells each inclosing a tube, a hook secured to the intethe elements, and each,

3. A bracelet, comprising in combination a series of tubes, a series of shells each embracing a tube, hinge members secured to the interior surfaces of the juxtaposed ends of each tube and shell,y respectively, the hinge member` secured to each shell being provided with oppositely disposed ears, a connecting member having its forward end portions provided with recesses arranged tov receive said ears, respectively, and a resilient member interposed between each tube and the rearward end of a connecting member.
4l. A bracelet, comprising in combination a series of tubes, a series of shells each embracing a tube, hinge members secured to the interior surfaces of the juxtaposed ends of each tube and shell, respectively, the hinge member secured to each shell being provided with oppositely disposed ears, and 2 a connecting member of spring material having its forward end portions oppositely curved and provided with recesses whereby the end of said member may be snapped over said ears and secured in position, and a resilient member interposed between each tube and the rearward end of a connecting member.
