CLINTON E. WALTON, F LIVINGSTON, MONTANA.
FLASH-LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. '12. El] 8.
Application med August 31, 1917. Serial No. 188.181.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLINTON E. Huron,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Livingston, in the county of Park, State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Imgrovements in Flash-Lamps; and
1110 here y declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact dGSCIipfiOH of the invention; as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains toumeke and use the same.
This inyention is an improvement in lamps and hasparticular reference to an electric flash lamp.
An object of the invention is to provide a lamp of simple and inexpensive construe tion whichis not only capable of being used as a pocket flash light but may also be sup ported from a suitable portion of a garment or may be attached to vehicles of different kinds. r
' The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving'a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention,v is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of the lamp constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fi 2 is a side elevation of the lamp part y in. section:
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal ver tical 'section.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the Mn supporting brackets A preferred form of the invention is illusjtrstcd in the aoeom anying drawing wherelnthe numeral. 5 in icates the casing or body portion of the lamp which incloses a dry cell 6 having the contacts Tend 8 extending "therefrom. Any well known form of dry en may be used and itwill be readily apparent that the same may be replaeed whenever desiril. The casing 5ie provided upon 15 the rear thereof with an attaching clamp 9 having one end secured; to the casing by.
means of fasteners 10 and provided intermediate itsends with a bent port'on 11 ad-q about a horizontal axis jacent which projects a lug 19., a apted for engagement with the top of theieover 13 whereby to aid in retaining said 'cover in ologil position A portion 14 of the clamp ffo v by bending the at 11 is pro" vided-adjacant ite upper end witlx an aperul tum-15 whieli extencls through an enlargement 16, said Opening being; HCPOW-Llllfllldfi fi to receive a. screw carried by a vel'iirle such as a bicycle or motor i whereby the lamp may be attached thereto. The ortion 14 is further provided with u plurality of projections or spurs 17 which are adopted to engage the cloth of a garment whereby to be curely retain the lamp in an adjusted position. When it is desired to (airy the lamp about in the hand. mail 18 may be employed the ends of whirl'l are bent m and adapted to (letauhebly engage the sockets H formed mljarent the top and at the ends of the cover 13v 3212 end of the nova: ii? i" preferably pro rid-120i with a vorti nliy disposed it if? in which is adj'izstabl in the form of a Si means of a nut mounted the contact :Bl. If n pool-l on lw adapted to engage the commit T when Tim cover is in closing position Central 1y (lisposod in the top of the cover 15% is a second contact in the form of aserum the inner end of which is; :ulaptml to mgage he con: toot 8 when said eovorf closed and semi contact insnlatei'l from the cover by means of the bushing 24 The contact 523 is held in. position by means of nuts A pair of oppositely disposed lamp sup porting brackets 26 and are pivotalljv nmunteal up jm the ['12 not 23 and the pivoted end of the bra-rho? l in in ngagement with the to of the ma i while the: ruljacent end of the lH 'Pt 1 from the end of the bimmt it: .stion In order lu hill in premix-jog: 28 in place The :ldjnront and of the Mack 27 is provided with a projoctio .12 which bites into the ruler siwtncroi the in. sulution but wh ch does not engwge the bracket 26.
A reflector casing 29 is pivotolly miniotetl between the free ends of the brackets 26 and 2'? by means of the pivot nine R0 and 31 disposed at diametrically opposite points on the casing 29 and extending; horizontal therefrom wherebythe casing will swing; n :ulcliton to being" adjustable about a vertical axis formal by the pivoting of the brackets 26 anal 527 on the content The pivot 3 is inmglated from the reflector casing 29 end has moimted thereon one end of a curved arm 32 partially Wrapped with insulation 3? and havirlg; its free end normally spacer"? from the adjacent and of the lamp socket 34 carrying the small lamp 35, said free end of the arm 32 being adapted for electrical contact with the end contact of said socket 34 when said arm is pressed by a finger of the operator. The casing 29 is in electrical engagement with the bracket 27 through the pivot 31 so that the current from the cell 6 will flow through the contact 21, cover 13, bracket 27, casing 29 and lamp 35. When the arm 32 engages the socket 34, the current will then flow through said arm to the pivot 30 and from thence downwardly through the bracket 26, Contact 23 in engagement with said bracket, and then through the contact 8 of the cell 6.
What is claimed is 1. In a flash lamp, the combination of a cell containing casing, a removable cover therefor. contacts carried by said cover and in curcuit with the cell in said casing, supporting brackets pivoted upon one of said contacts and insulated from each other, one of said brackets having electrical engage ment with said cover and the other with said contact, a reflector casing pivotally mounted between said brackets and having a lamp socket therein, and a resilient contact arm carried by one of the pivots of said casing and adapted for electrical engagement with said lamp socket and said other cracket whereby to close the circuit.
2. A flash light comprising a cell containing casing, a removal cover therefor, a
contact vertically adjustable in one end of said cm or adapted to engage one of the contacts of a cell in said. casing and having electrical contact with said cover, a second contact disposed vertically in the top of said cover and haying engagement with the other contact of said cell and being insulated from said cover, a pair of supporting brackets pivotally mounted upon said second contact, one of said brackets being insulated from said contact and having electrical engagement with said cover, the other bracket being insulated from the first IlEtlTlHd bracket and having electrical engagement with said SEC and contact. a lamp supporting casing pivotall mounted on horizontal pivots between said brackets. said casing having electrical contact with the first named bracket and insulated from they second named bracket. and a resilient contact arm adapted for engage ment with a lamp in said lamp casing and carried by one of the pixots of said lamp casing and having electrical connection With the second named bracket whereby a circuit may be closed through said cover, supporting brackets, and lamp casing.
In testin'iony whereof, I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
