AUTOMATIC FIIiLING-REPIZENISHING LOOM.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoNzo E. RHoADns, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Hopedale, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an ,Improvement in Automatic Filling-Replenishing Looms, of which the following'description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the c rawing representing like parts. 7
This invention relates to improvements in automatic filling replenishing looms and the principal object thereof is to provide. a construction in which the filling carriers may be automatically discharged from the shuttle during the operation of the loom without danger of being engaged by the picker stick or of striking other parts of the loom. t
In the usual automatic filling replenishing loom construction the end portion of the lay is slotted to provide a path for the picker stick, and the filling carriers are discharged bythe transferring mechanism from the shuttle through the slot thus provided. In

sufliciently to support the picker stick in such a way that it may be reciprocated in a path at the side of the lay, for reasons which will hereinafter more fully appear.
The picker stick may be actuated through 'me'chanism sometimes is sufliciently delayed to be hit by the picker stick and hurled against other portions of the loom thereby damaging both the filling carrier and the thrown.
In the present invention the picker stick islocated and operated in a path which is clear of the path of the outgoing filling'carrier so that the filling carriers may be discharged from the shuttlefwithout danger of being struck by thepicker stick.
In the construction shown in the accompanying drawings the; lay is provided with a race plate of novel design, said race plate comprising in addition to the'usual flat race plate 15, which is setinto the top of the lay to form a partof the race for'the shuttle, a downward extension 16 which embraces the front of the lay, and anarrow flange 17 which embraces the back upper edge of'the lay. 'The flange 17 has a downward continuation 18 which preferably reaches-to the bottom of the lay and is connected to the flange 16 by a web 19 which incloses the end cf the layvso thatthe flanged structure com prises a box-like construction which wholly incloses the end of the lay.
This race plate construction is also provided with a horizontal extension or shelf which projects beyond the end of the lay and also extends a considerable distance beyond the rear and is provided with a downwardly extending flange 21. The lateral extension 20 is provided with a recess or slot forming a path for the picker stick at the end of its movement.
The lay is provided with the usual shuttle box, the rear wall 23 only of which is shown herein, together with the overlying top portion 24:. The rear wall 23 of the shuttle box is provided with a longitudinal slot which forms a guideway for the picker 26. The picker 26 preferably is made of rawhide and is provided with an enlarged and thickened end 27 formed integral with a body portion 28 which extends through the guideway in the rear wall of the shuttle box and is enlarged and horizontally apertured at its outer portion to receive a guide rod 29. The guide rod 29 desirably mounted in brackets 30, 31 the bracket 30 being secured to the top of the race plate near its rear edge and the bracket 31 to the extension or shelf 20 of said race plate. The picker 26 is vertically apertured to receive the end of the picker stick 13 and its enlarged end portion 27 is provided with the usual conical socket to receive the end of the shuttle 32.
In the operation of the loom the picker stick 13 is oscillated in the usual manner and causes the picker 2G to reciprocate forwardly and backwardly in the way 25 in the wall of the shuttle box. being also guided in such reciprocation from the guide rod 29. By reason of the fact that the picker stick is thus supported at the side of the lay it is removed from the path of the outgoing filliiig carrier which is discharged by the trans ferring mechanism. This construction also permits the picker check to be so located as to be clear of the path of the outgoing filling carrier.
In the picker stick construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings the check strap is secured to a bracket 34 extending downwardly from the under face of the lay. Another bracket 35 which desirably is secured to the side of the box-like race plate construction extends parallel to the lay beyond the end of such box-like construction where it ofi'set inwardly as at 36 and again provided with a continuation 37 in parallelism with the lay, said continuation having a downwardly extending finger 38 which is engaged by the check strap or around which the check strap is bent.
Frictional pressure is imposed upon the check strap by a finger 39 forming part of an L-shaped bracket 40 which is desirably secured by a bolt 41 to an ear azwvhieh extends laterally from the lower part of the offset portion 37 of the bracket A slot 43 formed in the ear l2 and through which the bolt 41 extends provides means by which the bracket 4:0 may be adjusted. The fingers 38 and 39 are in rather close proximity so that a more or less abrupt bend in the check strap may be provided as may be desired to give the right amount of friction to arrest properly the movement of the picker stick.
In the operation of the loom the picker stick is oscillated in the usual manner the end 27 of the picker 26 serving to arrest and to propel the shuttle. When transfer takes place the transfer arm 5 is actuated in the usual manner to drive the filling carrier from the shuttle through the slot l t in the lay, and inasmuch as the picker stick is located and oscillated in a path which is clear of the course followed by the outgoing filling carrier, the latter may be discharged into a suitable receptacle without danger of being struck by the picker stick and in ured or driven against another part of the loom.
It will be understood that the embodiment of the invention disclosed herein is illustrative and not restrictive and that various changes may be made within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a lay having an aperture to permit the discharge of filling carriers from the shuttle during the operation of the loom, a hopper located above the path of the lay adapted to posit-ion filling carriers successively above the shuttle box when the latter is in position for transfer, transferring mechanism, means for actuating the same to thrust a fresh filling carrier from the hopper into the shuttle a picker, and means for actuating said picker located and operating in a path which is clear of the course followed by the outgoing filling carrier as it is discharged from the shuttle by said transferring mechanism.
2. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a lay having an aperture to permit the discharge of filling carriers from the shuttle during the operation of the loom, a hopper located above the path of the lay adapted to position filling carriers successively above the shuttle box when the latter is in position for transfer, transferring mechanism, means for actuating the same to thrust a fresh filling carrier from the hopper into the shuttle, a picker, a picker stick connected thereto and means for oscillating said picker stick in a path in parallelism with said lay which is clear of the course followed by the outgoin filling carrier as it is discharged from t l transferring mechanism.

An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a lay having an aperture therethrough to permit the discharge of filling carriers from the shuttle during the operation of the loom, a hopper located above the path of the lay adapted to position filling carriers successively above the shuttle box when the latter is in transferring position, transferring mechanism and means for actuating the same to thrust a fresh filling carrier from the hopper into the shuttle, 'a picker, a picker stick engaging said picker located and operated in parallelism with the-lay and clear of the course followed by the filling carrier as it is discharged from the shuttle by the transferring mechanism, a race plate having an extension embracing the end of the lay, brackets secured to said race plate and extension, a guide rod for said picker carried by said brackets, a bracket depending from said extension,

An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a lay having an aperture therethrough to permit the discharge of filling carriers from the shuttle during the operation of the loom, transferring mechanism, a picker and means for actuating said picker located and operating in a path clear of the course of the outgoing filling carrier as it is discharged from the shuttle by the transferring mechanism, a race plate having extensions embracing the end of the lay and providing a guideway for said picker stick, brackets secured to said race plate, and a guide rod carried by said brackets for guiding said picker.
6. A race plate construction for looms comprising a plate having a flat top form ing a raceway, downwardly extending flanges adapted to embrace the sides of the lay, a lateral extension forming a guideway for a picker stick, brackets secured to said race plat and extension and a guide rod for a picker supported by said brackets, whereby the picker stick will be guided in a path which is clear of the course followed by the outgoing filling carrier discharged by the transferring mechanism.
7 A race plate construction for looms comprising a plate having a fiat top forming a raceway, downwardly extending flanges adapted to embrace the sides of the lay, a lateral extension forming a guideway for a picker stick, brackets secured to said race plate and extension and a guide rod for a picker supported by said brackets, whereby the picker stick will be guided in a path which is clear of the course followed by the outgoing filling carrier the charged by the transferring mechanism, and means supported by said extension outside of the course of the outgoing filling carrier for imposing frictional pressure upon the picker check strap of the loom.
