IMPROVEMENT IN QUILTINGi-FRAIVIES.'A
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,334, dated June 25, 1872'.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, ANTHONY O. STrvE- SON, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a reference being had to the annexed drawingv making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a transverse vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail View.
Myinvention has relation to quilting-frames. The novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts by which the frame is rendered capable of being taken apart for convenience in transportation or storing away; also, in `the construction and arrangement of devices for turning the pivoted frame-bars, all as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the ends of a quiltingframe, supporting the pivoted bars B, to which the quilt material is attached, and by the turning of which the work is properly stretched and moved. The ends of the frame are provided with the middle feet C, and are connected at the bottom by means of a horizontal beam, D, which rests on the transverse bars Al and the feet C, and which is provided with the pins or studs d, which enter holes in said bars and feet, and secure the beam firmly in its position. Additional fastenin gs are provided, in the nature of pivoted hooks d2, on the beam, which catch in eyes d3 on the feet C. The arrangement of this beam enables it to be removed in taking the frame apart. The upper part of each of the ends of the frame supporting the bars B consists of two horizontal sections, b b1, hinged together, and holding between them the journals of said bars B. These sections are fastened by means of a hook and loop, E. By turning back the upper sections b the bars B may be taken out of the frame. The journals b2 of the bars B are constructed with shouldered ends b3, fitting enlargements in their bearings, and designed to hold the upper parts of the frame rigidly. At the end of each of the bars B is a pinion, F, which engages with another pinion, F1, having its shaft-bearings in a bracket, G', and -in one of the legs a of the frame-ends. On the shaft of vthe pinion F1 is a balance-wheel, F2, provided with a crank-arm, by the turning of which the bars B are rotated. G designates spring-pawls, arranged to act on the pinions F, so as to prevent them from being turned by the tension of the stretched quilt. These pawls are constructed with curved tail extensions g, against the concave surfaces of which pivoted cams g act in such a manner as to hold the pawls in contact with the pinions. H designates elastic bands encircling the bars B, and furnished with hooks h for the purpose of holding the quilt. I designates a pair of hinged tableleaves, provided with studs i to enter holes in the top of the sections b, upon which said leaves are supported. A pivoted button, j, serves to support the leaves at the joint. These leaves are designed to be used as a table for dining or other purposes.
This table attachment is especially useful when the size of an apartment prevents the convenient use of a separate table.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, in a quilting-frame, of the pivoted bars B, pinions F F1, spring-pawls G', with curved tail-pieces g, cams g', and crank-wheel F2, substantially as specified. y
2. The improved quilting-frame having the hinged sections b b1, bars B, with shouldered spindles b2, pinions F F1, balance-wheels F2, brackets G, spring-pawls G', with tail-pieces g, cams g', beam D with studs d, and the fastenings E d* d3, all constructed and arranged substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ANTHONY O. STIVESON.
