RUDOLF PFENNINGER, 0F MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
CUSPIDOR. f i
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Uct. 29, 1918.
Application filed April 15, 1918. i Serial No. 228.603.
To all LU/0m t may concern y.
Y. e it known that I, RUDOLF PFENNINGER, a citizen of Switzerland, residing at Mllwaulree, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is aV specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cuspidors of that type wherein the cover is adapted to be raised by means of a hand or foot lever to permit use of the cuspidor, said cover then being closed by a return spring when pressure isV removed from the opening levers. The prime object of the invention is to provide a cuspidor ofthis type that is sanitary in use, the construction of the cuspidor being such as to permit the instant removal of the bowl with its top inkf closed position so that its contents may be evacu ated through a suitable bowl-perforation without exposing the said contents to view and without the possibility of disseminating nauseating odors by the operation.
lilith the foregoing and other objects in View the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter'fully described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of mycuspi# dor in side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the cuspidor in open position.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the cuspidor with the upper end of the back and hand lever broken away.
Fig. 4f is an end view, tipped forward, below the level of the eye.
Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The reference numeral 1 denotes the box which is formed with the back 2 which may serve as a handle, said box being formed in one wall with perforations 3 in alinement with the larger perforations l formed in the said back 2 and said box being formed with a large opening in its front wall to permit the insertion and removal of the bowl 5 which will be fully described hereinafter. A cover 6 for the box 1 is secured by hinges 7 to the said back 2. To theback 2 I secure a tubular member 8 by fastening means 9, said tubular member containing a spiral expansion spring 10 to the upper end of which one end of the plunger rod l1 is secured within said member 8, said plunger rod 11 being connected by the angular rcsilient fork-lever l2 to the hand rod 13 which is movable longitudinally of the back 2 through the guides 11i secured to the said back, said hand rod 18 being provided with the head 15.
The prongs of the forlr-lever 12 extend through the perforations 3, 4 and beneath the top 6 and through guide eyes 16 secured `to a block 17 carried upon the under side of the said top 6, said fork-lever having a sliding bearing upon the rear wall of the box 1 as the head 15 is manually depressed to depress the plunger 11 and spring 9 and cause said fork-lever to raise the top 6 to open position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and in full lines in Fig. 2. When pressure upon the head 15 is removed the spring 9 will raise the plunger 11 and connections thus causing the fork-lever to move the cover back to closed position. To the rear wall of the box 1 a foot lever 18 is pivotally Secured by pin 19, said lever being connected by pin 2O to the plunger rod l1 to depress the same when pressure is applied to the free end of said rod 18.
The aforesaid bowl 5 is formed at its top with the chute 21 in which is formed the clearance slot 21afor a collar 26 hereinafter described, and over said chute a cover 22 is disposed which is connected by hinges 23 to the bowl-body, said cover 22 being formed with the elongated slot 24 through which the pin 25 extends, said pin being secured to and carried by the box cover 6 and provided with the aforesaid collar 26 which is disposed upon the under side of the cover 22. As the cover 6 is raised to open position in the manner previously described the pin and collar 25, 26 will raise the cover 22' to open position. The bowl-body 5 is formed below its cover with the mouth or perforation 27 through which the contents of the bowl may be evacuated and through which the bowl may be flushed. The bowl is provided with the button 2S by means of which it may be with drawn from the box 1, the slot 24 being open at one end permitting the cover 22 to be withdrawn from engagement with the pin and collar 25, 26 when the bowl is entirely withdrawn from said box to be emptied, iiushed or cleaned.
What is claimed is z- 1. In a cuspidor, a perforated box having an ripening in one face, a back secured to said boX and perforated in alineinent with the perforations in said box7 atop for said neeting said plunger and top and passing through the alinedA perforations 1nA said box and back for raising said top as said plunger is depressed, means eonneeting said plunger and back for yieldingly retaining said plunger in raised position, a bowl removably disposed in said boX and adapted for passage through the opening in said box-face, said bowl being formed with a mouth, a slotted cover hinged to the body of said bowl, and .means connectingV the slotted portion of said Cover and the aforesaid top whereby said members are moved simultaneously into open or closed position While said bowl is disposed within said box.
2. In a euspidor, a perforated box having an` opening in its front faee, a back secured to said boX and perforated in alineinent with the perforations in said box, a top for said box hinged to said back, a plunger operatively seeured to said back, a fork-lever eonneeting said plunger and top and passing through the a-lined perforations in said boX and back for raising said top as -said plunger is depressed, means connecting said plunger and bael for yieldingly retaining said plunger 1 in raised position, a bowl removably disposed in said box and adapted for passage through the opening in said front box-faee, said bowl being formed with a mouth, a slotted cover hinged to said bowl, and a pin provided with a collar connecting theslotted portion of said cover and the aforesaid top whereby said members may be raised or lowered `sinmltaneously or said bowl and eover may be withdrawn from engagenient with said top;
ln testimony that I elaim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiiixe'd my signa`- ture in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.4
