To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, FRED i MEIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stanford, in the county of Fergus and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to package ties and more particularly to an improved device for engaging and securing the free ends of a fastening cord employed in tying a package.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and strong device that may be readily formed from asingle strip of metal to provide the different elements for receiving loops formed in the binding cord to secure the latter in position without the necessity of tying knots.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a package tie which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of the package tie constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a modified form of the invention, the cord receiving element being arranged at each end of the metal strip.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of one end of the device illustrating the application of a binding cord thereto.
Referring to the drawings, and particularly to Figs. 1 and 3, it will be noted that the device is constructed from an elongated strip of metal having its longitudinal marginal edges folded upon themselves to provide reinforcing strips for strengthening the strip of metal. One end of the strip is folded upon itself as indicated at 5 to form the retaining plate 6 and this plate overlies the straight portion of the strip and is spaced therefrom to form the cord receiving space 7. This end of the strip is again bent upon itself and over the plate 6 as indicated at 8 and this folded portion is bent diagonally so that the end of the strip proje'cts over one side edge forming a tongue 9. This tongue 9 is spaced from the adjacent portion in order that the cord may be eX- tended through the space beneath the tongue which is done as shown in Fig. 3. The end of the cord A is first passed through the space 7 between the body of the strip and the plate 6, as indicated by dotted lines. The cord is then passed over the top of the plate 6, over its opposite edge and agaln under the plate 6, from which point it is brought through the space between the plate 8 and the triangularly shaped member beneath the tongue 9. The diagonal edge is then engaged by the cord which passes over and under the tongue 9 and is pulled through the spacebetween the plate 6 and the triangular shaped member, so that the cross portion indicated at 10 binds the cord and prevents accidental displacement.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable device has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood, that slight changes may be made in the minor details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the claims hereunto appended.
I claim:
1. A package tie comprising a metallic strip, a retaining plate formed at one end of the strip and overlying the same in spaced relation thereto to provide a cord receiving space, a tongue disposed above the said plate and projecting beyond one side edge thereof and a triangular portion formed between the said tongue and the said plate.
2. A package tie comprising a strip of flexible metallic material having one end folded upon itself and spaced from the body of the strip to provide a cord receiving space, the end of the strip being then folded upon the said retaining plate and bent diagonally with respect to the said retaining plate to provide a diagonal edge, and a tongue formed by the end of the said plate projecting beyond the side edge of the said plate and in spaced relation from the adjacent portion of the said folded end.
3.
