Description

Y lUNITED STATES PATENT QEEroEn JOSEPH RAVOUX, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND LUGIEN KNAPP, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ARGAND LAMP-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,325, dated June 25, 1872.
Specification describinga new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Burner, invented by J o- SEPH RAVOUX, of the city of New York, county and State of New York.
Figure 1 represents a vertical central seotion of my improved lampburner. Fig. 2 is a detail transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference represent corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in the construction and arrangement of lamp# burners which are adapted for the reception of annular wicks; and has for its object to improve the flame by a more perfect system of admission of air. The invention consists in admitting air at the base of the flame of an Argand burner by means of tubes bent as hereinafter described.
a, in the drawing, represents the inner tube of the burner, connected by a bridge, b, with the outer tube d, which connects with a perforated cup, e, and also with the iiange or cap f that supports the burner on the globe or reservoir. The cup e serves as support for the cone p that holds the chimney. gis the wicktbe, embracing the tubea and slotted to straddle the bridge b and an arbor, h, which is f1tted from without through the bridge b into the tube a. The arbor h carries a pinion, i, within the tube a, said pinion being in gear with a toothed bar or rack, l, that proj ects from a contraoted lower portion of the wick-tube from below into the tube a, as shown. By turning the arbor h, whose outer end is provided with a hand-wheel or other device for such purpose, the wick-tube can be adj usted up or down. The
upper end of the Wick-tube is roughened like a grater or otherwise to constitute a proper retaining-surface for the wick when the same has been tied to it. The wick-holder need not be a complete tube, even at the upper end, but may be a plate bent around the the tube a so that its edges do not meet, though the upper connection is desirable as a support on the bridge to prevent the wick from being burned too far. The upper end of the tube a is somewhat contracted and perforated. The upper end of the tube d, or4 of a removable upward extension, m, thereof, is also perforated and somewhat bent outward. The burning end of the wick will be between these two perforated upper ends of the tubes a m, and the root or lower end of the darne consequently exposed at both sides to jets of air striking it. The quality of the flame will thereby be improved. ois aplate or button secured upon a rod or stem, n, that projects upward from the bottom of the tube a. It will, when the lamp is lit, be in the upper part of the flame, expanding the same, and, beeomin g heated, improving the quality of the light.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An Argand burner having the tubes a d or m bent inward and outward, and perforated, as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
