To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES E. F LITGROFT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Burner, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, partially in section, of one form of my improved-burner.

This invention relates to an improvement in burners, and is designed to provide a cheap and efiicient device which can readily be constructed, and in which the liquid fuel is heated within the body of the burner in order to vaporize it before passing to theburner nozzle.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a burner of this character, in which the flow channels are formed by bending a piece of pipe into proper shape, and then casting a casing around a portion of the pipe whlch might be termed the generating coil,
and which casing is provided with a plurality .of air inlet openings, and fuel inlet and outlet openings. Another object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which will deliver a steady stream of gas without pulsation, and also to form a structure which will not clog up with what is generally known as carbonized oil.
Heretofore various attempts have been made to overcome the pulsating How of the gas, and I have found that the same can readily be overcome by inserting a coil' of fine wire. in the generating tube, over which the oil moves in its passage from the inlet to the burner nozzle, which will break up the oil without restricting the oil passage. I have also discovered that by forming the burner structure through which the oil passes from iron or steel, and inserting an iron or steel coil within the passage, that the device will not clog up, as no deposit will be formed within the passages through which the oil passes.

designates a tube having a longitudinally disposed leg 3, which is provided with threads 4: at the end for connecting the same This tube is bent into circular form as shown at 5, and is then bent to form a second leg 6 which extends parallel to the leg 3 for some distance and is then bent upwardly and inwardly, as indicated at 7 the end thereof beinghpproximately in alinement with the center of the burner. The end of the portion 7 is provided with a threaded opening for the reception of a nipple 8. Placed within the tube 2 1 a h lical coil 8 which may be formed of any suitablematerial, but I prefer to form it of either iron or steel wire. The tube may also be formed of any material, but as before stated I prefer to use iron, in order to avoid the choking of the tube. Surrounding the portion5 of the tube 2 and portions of the legs 3 and 6 is a casing 9 which is cast around the tube and is provided with an inlet 10 and an outlet 11. 12 are air inlet openings through the walls of the casing for admitting air to the casing, which is commingled with the air drawn in through the opening 10 by means of the jet flow from the nipple 8.
In the. form shown in the drawings the casing 9 is cast about portions of the tube 2 inclosed by the casing. By forming the passages in the manner above described, I am enabled to so shape them that the oil and gas will flow through the structure in a curved path, and thereby avoid all sharp turns which tend to increase friction and permit deposits to form.
In the drawings I have shown the coil 8 continuous from one end of the tube to the other, but it will readily be understood by those familiar with the art that I may insert a coil from each end of the tube.
The advantagesof my invention result from the provision of a burner having a bent tube and a casing cast about said tube whereby a curved passage for the oil is formed through the burner, together with a helical coil within said tube for preventing the pulsation of the gas stream. Further the provision of a burner and coil formed of iron or steel, will prevent the formation of deposits within the passage therethrough.
I claim:
1. A liquid fuel burner or blow torch, comprising a tube bent upon itself and having a gas exit opening at one end of the tube, the
tubular member having two-legs extending parallel to each other for apart of their length, and connected to each other at one of their ends by a single circular loop extending at right angles to the parallel portionsof the legs, saidcasing being cast about the loop and a portion ofthe legs of the tubular member to fixedly lock them to each other, one of the legs of the tubular member being arranged to be connected to a fuel supply pipe, the other leg of the tubular member be- I ing bent upwardly and inwardly in the form of a goose neck to form a gas outlet, approximately in line with the center of the casing, substantially as described.
'3. A liquid fuel burner comprising a casone of the legs of the tubular member being arranged to be'connected to -a fuel supply pipe, the other leg of the tubular member being bent upwardly and forwardly in the form of a goose neck to form agas outlet approximately in line with the center of the casing, and a nipple secured in the end of said last mentioned member, substantially as described.
