MARKING- DEVICE FOR, DRESSIVIAKERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 29%, 1918.
Application filed September 30, 1912. Serial No. 723,269.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that L'MATTIE M. L. CLEM- nNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Marking Device for Dressmakers, of'which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to devices or charts used for cutting out dress patterns and the obj ects of my invention are, first, to provide all the necessary curves and measurements on one instrumentgsecond, to arrange the4 different curves and rules in a compact form; third, to' make a simple and cheap device and other features to become apparent from the description to follow.
Heretofore dress patterns or dress goods have been cut out by the use of a number of different devices suchV as the arm rule or chart; the body and hip rule or guide, the neck and arm guide and an inch rule.. With my device all these different rules, guides and charts are combined to form one complete device. The device is preferably made of heavy paper or thin wood but can be made of any other suitable material.
To describe my invention so that others can make and use the device I have illustrated it on the accompanying sheet of drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure l, is a face View of one side of the complete device and Fig. 2, is a face view of the other side of the same. Y
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts in both views.
` The device is made of suitable fiat material in the form of a wide rule having the parallel edges 3 and 4, and tapered at one end at 5 and provided with the enlargement 6 at the other end. As clearly indicated in Fig. 1, the straight edge 3 serves as the shoulder guide, passing around the chart or shield from left to right, as viewed in Fig. 1, the shoulder guide connects `with the curved side body and hip guide 7, which in turn connects with the straight edge 4 at the angle 8. It will be noted that the right hand end of the shoulder guide, as viewed in Fig. 1, curves, and said curve coincides with a part of the curved side of the body and hip guide, so that the chart can be reduced in size. The straight edge 4 serves as the skirt and under arm guide which connects at the angle 9 with the curved neck scye guide or neck hole guide 10, and
this in turn connects with the curved arm scye guide or arm hole guide l1, which connects at the angle 12 with the curved back-of-neck guide 13 which connects at the angle 14 with the straight portion 3. This completes the circuit of the contour of the chart or device. It will be noted that the neck scye curve and the arm scye curve partly coincide so as to reduce the size of the chart.
Each guide is provided with equally spaced designations or graduations preferably inches and each guide is indicated by name for what purpose it is designed to be used. As also indicated on the device, it is reversed tocut the sleeves. Thus all the necessary guides and rules are combined in one instrument, and the user has any one of the guides before him all the time. This obviates the necessity of obtaining a separate guide or rule for cutting each part of a dress or garment.
In operation or use the measurements of the person for whom the dress is to be made are given; the general design of the different parts of the dress are marked out on a sheet of paper; the shoulder guide 3 of the device is used to mark a straight line on the paper of the proper length according to the measurement given; the arm scye guide l1 is used to mark a properly curved line of the proper length according to the measurement at the arm hole; the neck scye guide 10 or the back of neck guide 13 is used to mark a properly curved line on the paper according to what part of the dress, front or back, is being marked and according to the style of the dress; the under arm guide 4: is used to mark a straight line of the proper length according to the measurement; and finally the side body and hip guide 7 is used to mark a properly curved line on the paper according to the measurement given.
It will be noted that the device is so constructed that the extremities of the arm hole guide 11 and neck hole guide 10 converge or unite in a single curve and likewise the extremities of the shoulder guide 3 and the side body and hip guide 7 converge or unite in a single line. l
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A marking device for dressmakers comprising a fiat plate having a straight edge, a shoulder guide, a side body and hip guide, a neck scye guide, an arm scye guide, a back of neck guide, and a skirt and under arm guide; said straight edge having consecutively numbered graduations there along, said shoulder guide and side body and hip guide being joined to form a continuous guide so that a portion of the one is used in connection with the other, and
said neck lscye guide and arm scye guide be ing joined to form a continuous guide so that a portion of the one is used in connection with the other. j
2. A marking device i'or dressmakers, comprising a iiat plate having a straight edge with consecutively numbered graduations on opposite sides of the plate adjacent such straight edge, a combined neck scye curve and arm scye curve with consecutively numbered graduations on opposite sides of the plate adjacent such curves thereof and a combined shoulder guide edge and sideN body and hip guidel curve with consecutively numbered graduations on opposite sides of the plate adjacent such curves, saidgraduations being numbered in opposite directions on the opposite sides of the device, said neck scye curve and arm scye curve being joined to form a continuous curve so that a portion of the one is used in connection With the other, and said shoulder guide edge and side body and hip guide curve being joined to form a continuous curve so that a portion of the one is used in connection With the other.
In'testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of tvvo subscribing Witnesses this 17th day of September 1912 at Chicago, Ill.
