IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-COOLERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,298, dated June 25, 1872.

SPECIFICATION. l

I, KINGSTON GODDAED, of Richmond, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Water-Coolers and other vessels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of the same, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of a watercooler7 constructed in accordance-with my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same.

My invention relates to making vessels for refrigerative and other purposes by combining in a solid wall a circular shell, bottom and cover of wood, and a close-fitting metal lining coated with silver or otherincorrosive metal, as

hereinafter described.

In the drawing, B is the external circular shell and bottom of the vessel, and O is the cover of the same, all of wood, and F is the incorrosive lining of plated or coated metal. The said shell, bottom, and cover may be turned separately from suitable blocks of wood, or the shell may be set up in sections or staves glued together and afterward turned into the circular form, or the staves secured by hoops` or bands without gluing, as shown in Fig. 2. The lining Fis of Wrought metal-generally of Britanniaor white metal,asitis called--and is made from the sheet in any of the well-known ways, of the requisite form and size to fit the interior of the shell, where it is then inserted and re-v volved in a lathe and the lining stretched and enlarged by the operation of spinning, and fitted solidly again st the inside and over the edge of the wooden form or shell, as shown at m. So, also, the lining of the cover O is spun solidly against the inside and over the edge of the Wood and further secured by the stayI through its center, after which the metal is subjected to the electroplating process, and, the while, thoroughly coated with pure silver or other suitable metal, to render it incorrosive.

The lining formed by spinning metal solidly onto the shell and cover of wood, as described, eii'ectually excludes the air from between the wood and metal and thereby greatly increases the frigoric effect of the same, beside giving strength and lightness to the Whole structure. Wood, on account of its cheapness and the facility with which it can be wrought into the required form, is preferred for the external shell and cover of such vessels.

The class of vessels to which this invention is particularly applicable comprises Water-coolers and pitchers, wine and butter coolers, jars, &c., and others of like portable character for rei'rigerative purposes; also, to articles of general table-ware, and for dairy purposes.

Having described my invention, I claim- A portable circular refrigerating-vessel made of a wooden shell and cover, having a close-f1tting metal lining spun to and upon its whole inner surface, and secured by bands upon the outside, substantially as shown and described.
