KARL NIGKMANN', 0F GHOTEAU, MONTANA.
LOAD-BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented (lot. 29, 191%.
Application filed December 13, 1917. Serial No. 206,926.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL NIGKMANN, a citizen of the United States, residin' at Choteau, in the county of Teton and tate 'of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Load-Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in load binders and its object is to provide a device particularly adapted for use in binding loads of lumber, logs or other material in a compact manner during transportation, etc. With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a load bound by my improved device.
Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the binder.
Fig. 3 is a view of the same in side elevation.
Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout.
My load binder comprises a hand lever having the handle 1 to which the headpiece 2 is secured by the rivets 3. A locking chain 4 is linked to one end of the handle 1 and carries an anchor hook 5. A
' pin 6 loosely carried at one end of the head piece 2 is provided at each end with a rotary ratchet 7, both ratchets 7 being fast to the pin, adapted for engagement with the pawls 8 which are carried by the integral lateral ears 9 of the said head-piece 2; said pawls being yieldingly retained in engagement with their ratchets by the springs 10 arranged, in interiorly recessed portions of the said ears 9. The periphery of each' ratchet 7 is grooved to receive a binding chain 11 which is provided with a hook 12.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for In operation the binding chains 11 are passed about the load 13 and the ratchets 7 rotated by means of the hand lever and pawls 8 to take up all slack in said chains. The hooks 12 at one end of the chains 11 are then secured to one of the links of said chains and the anchor hook5 may be secured to the load as shown in Fig. 1 and the load is securely bound. By manually releasing the hooks 5 and 12 the load is readily released for unloading or other purpose.
What is claimed is:-
' 1. In a load binder, a hand lever comprising a handle and a head-piece carried thereby, peripherally grooved rotary ratchets carried by said head-piece and adapted to receive a chain, pawls carried by said headpiece for engagement with said ratchets, a locking chain linked to said lever-handle, and an anchor hook carried by said chain.
2. In a load binder, a hand lever comprising a handle and a headpiece carried thereby, oppositely disposed interiorly recessed ears formed integral with said headpiece, peripherally grooved rotary ratchets carried by said head-piece and adapted to receive a chain, pawls carried by the said ears, springs arranged in the interiorly grooved portions of said ears and engaging said pawls for yieldingly retaining the same in engagement with said ratchets, a locking chain linked to said lever handle, and an anchor hook carried by the said chain.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
KARL NICKMANN.
