JAMES SEALEY, OF CHASE, MICHIGAN.
LUMBEFhBINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 291,786, dated January 8 1884:.
Application filed September 26,1883. (N0 model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES SEALEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chase, in the county of Lake and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Log and Lumber Binders, of which the following isaspecification, reference had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to improvements in devices for binding logs and lumber upon wagons, cars, trucks, sleighs, and the like; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
I11 the accompanying drawings,to which letters of reference are made, Figure 1 is a representation of a side elevation of my invention, showing the same applied to a bundle of logs ready to be bound; and Fig. 2 is a view of the same, showing it applied to the logs in a bound position.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A i11- dicates a lever, which is provided at one end with a handle, a, and is bent near its opposite end, as at b, the upper edge, 0, of whichis convex, and the under portion, (1, concave. About midway this curved or bentportion,to one side of the lever, is pivotally connected a straight arm, B, in the lower end of which is an eye, (1, carrying a link, e. To the extreme end of this curved portion of the lever is also pivot-ally connected an arm, 0. This latter arm is connected to the side of the lever opposite to that of the straight arm B, and is in outline of a similar form to the curved portion 1) of the said lever. The whole device is preferably constructed of a flat bar of iron or steel, and the arm O,at its lower or free end, is bent over nearly upon itself, as shown, forming a groove, g, to receive one edge of the lever A, which grooved portion forms abearing for the lever when the device is in abound position. From this bent portion'extends a lateral offset, 02, which is provided with an eye and chain-link, to receive one end of the binding-chain, the opposite end being secured in the link of the straight arm B, as shown.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the main object of my invention is to get a double eccentric movement. Thus, when the logs or lumber is placed upon a wagon or the like and the chain passed around both the wagon-body and the logs, connecting its ends to the links in the pivoted arms, the device will assume the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings; but by the operator bring ing the lever A toward him and downward until the portion b is brought to bear in the groove of the arm 0, the chain will be drawn up and the device assume the position shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I r In a log and lumber binder, the combination, with the lever A, having the concaveeonveX portion 12, of the arm 0, of a similar contour and shape, provided with the groove 9, to receive the upper edge of the lever, and a short perforated arm to receive a chain-link, the straight arm B, pivoted at its upper end to the said concavo-convex portion of the lever A, and provided at the opposite end with an eye to receive a chain-link, and the binding-chain, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES SEALEY.
