SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 617,104, dated January 3, 1899.

- to a wagon-body to dispense with a rod running through the sides thereof and capable of firmly holding a wagon body or box together and of taking up the wear of the parts to prevent them from becoming loose.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of an end-gate fastener constructed in accordance with this invention and shown ap* plied to a wagon-body. Fig. 2 is an end elevation, partly in section, showing the position of the parts when unlocked. Fig. 3 is a hori- Zontal sectional view, the parts bein g arranged as shown in Fig. 1.

1 and 2 designate rods extending transversely of a wagon body or box 3 and provided at their outer ends with hooks f1 and 5, which engage eyebolts 6 of the sides 7 of the body or boX. The sides 7 of the wagon body or box are provided at their inner faces with vertical cleats 8, which are spaced apart to receive the ends of an end-gate 9 in the usual manner.
The inner ends of the transverse rods 1 and 2 are connected with an operating-lever 10, being secured in a bifurcation 1l of the same. One end of the operating-lever 10 is shaped to form a handle and its other end has the said bifurcation 11 and it is fulcrumed on a pivot 12, which passes through the bifurcated portion and secures the lever to the outer face of the end-gate.
The rod 1 is provided at its inner end with an eye 13, which is arranged on the pin 12"'I of the operating-lever, and the outerportion of the rod 1 is connected with the handle portion of the lever by a link 14, provided at its ends with eyes, the lower one receiving the rod 1 and the upper one engaging a perforation of the operating-lever. W'hen the operating-lever is swung upward, it carries the hook 4 with it and lifts the same out of engagement with the eyebolt of the adjacent side of the body or box. The inner end of the other rod 2 is provided with an eye 14 and is secured to the operating-lever at the inner side of the pivot 12 by a pivot `or pin 16, which permits the rod to swing independently of the movement of the lever. When the operatinglever is swung upward, the rod 2 is simultaneously moved in the same direction to disengage it from the eyebolt by means of a lever 17, fulcrumed between its ends at 18 on the end-gate ata point beneath the rod 2 and the bifurcated end of the operating-lever and connected with those parts by substantially vertical rods 19 and 20. The rod 19, which is connected at its lower end with the outer end of the lever 17 has its upper portion guided in an eye 21 and is provided at its upper terminal with an eye 22, which receives the rod 2. The lower end ofthe vertical rod 19 is provided with an eye which is linked into a corresponding eye of the lever 17 5 but the connection may be made bya pivot or any other suitable means.
The rod 2O is provided at its lower end with an eye to engage a perforation or eye of the of the handle portion of the operating-lever carries the hooks into engagement with the eyebolts, and as the inner ends of the transverse rods 1 and 2 are pivoted to the operating-lever at opposite sides of the fulcru1n- IOO point thereof the locking action of the lever operates to draw the rods inward, thereby tightly binding the sides of the wagon body or box against the ends of the end-gate and effectually preventing them from becoming loose or spreading. By this construction, together with the adjustment afforded by the eyebolts, the end-gate fastener is adapted to take up the wear of the parts and hold the wagon body or box rmly together.
The invention has the following advantages: The end-gate fastener, While being exceedingly simple and inexpensive in constru ction, dispenses with a continuous transverse rod and is adapted to bind the sides of a wagon body or box iirmly against the ends of an end-gate and prevent them from spreading. The device is also adapted to take up the wear of the parts and prevent them from becoming loose. It is easily operated, and by simply lifting the handle end of the operating-lever both hooks are simultaneously disengaged from the eyebolts of the sides of the wagon-body and the end-gate is released.
Changes in the form7 proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Vhat l claim is- 1. An end-gate fastener comprising an operatinglever designed to be fulcrumed on an end-gate and carrying a hook adapted to engage one side of a Wagon-body, a rod pivotally connected with the operating-lever and adapted to engage the other side of the wagonbody, a lever 17 fulcrumed between its ends and located at a point below the operatinglever and the rod, and rods connecting the ends of the lever 17 with the operating-lever and said rod, whereby when the operatinglever is swung upward, its hook and the rod will be simultaneously disengaged from the sides of the wagon-body, substantially as described.
2. An end-gate fastener comprising an operating-lever designed to be fulcrnmed on an end-gate, transverse rods connected at their inner ends with the operating -lever and adapted to engage the sides of a wagon-body,
connections between the outer portion of one of the rods and the operating-lever, the lever 17 fulcrumed between its ends, and rods con= necting the lever 17 with the other rod and with the operating-lever, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a Wagon-body provided at opposite sides with eyes, an end-gate, an operating-lever fulcrumed near one end on the end-gate, rods 1 and 2 connected at their inner ends to the operating-lever and provided at their outer ends with hooks en gaging said eyes, a link connecting the handle end of the operating-lever with the rod 1, a guide-eye mounted on the end-gate, the lever 17 fulcrumed on the end-gate below the operating-lever, the rod 19 connected with one end of the lever 17, passing through the guide-eye and arranged to lift the rod 2, and the rod 2O connecting the operating-lever with the lever 17, substantially as described.
