Description
GERGE C. SMITH.
Slate-Frame..
NO. 128,256'. v Y Patented June 25,1872.;
UNITED STATES PATENT CEEIOE.
GEORGE O. SMITH, OF HAMILTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO W. A. L. KIRK, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLATE-FRAM ES.
Specification forming part of LettersPatent No. 128,266, dated June 25, 1872.
Specification describing a certain Improvement in Slates, invented by GEORGE C. SMITH,
' pivoted at the other end in a groove in the frame of the slate, into which groove the holder is folded to retain the pencil.
Figure 1 is a plan view of an ordinary slate having my holder attached to it. Fig. 2 is a section on line .fr a: of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line y y of Fig. 1.
The same lettersof reference are used in both figures in the designation of identical parts.
My pencil-holder, A, is made of sheet metal, and of a rectangular form, in cross-section, so that when folded into the groove a, formed in one side or edge of the frame, its outer surface :may be flush with the frame. The holder is pivoted at one end in said groove, and its other end, which is open, is cut olf obliquely, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2, leaving the upper side the longest. The end of the groove is of corresponding form; but the tubular holder is so arranged in the groove as to cause the extreme outer end of its upper longest side to lap over the edge of the groove, and thus aiford the facility for inserting a knife-blade or the nail of a finger under it for the purpose of turning the holder outward to abstract or insert the slate-pencil. The groove in the frame of the slate is made a very little narrower than the holder, so that the latter, when folded into the groove, will be held therein by the friction of the sides of the groove upon it. Y
I :un aware that it is not new, broadly, to combine a slate-pencil holder with a slate, and therefore limit my claim to the specific construction and arrangement of the parts shown and hereinbefore described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The holderA,pivoted at one end in a groove,
i a, in the frame of a slate, and cut off obliquely at the other end, as shown, so that the extreme end of its outer side may lap over the edge of the groove, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimonywhereof I have signed myname to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEO. C. SMITH.
Witnesses P. KILLIN, S. TOLBERT.
