Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 1,282, datedV August 9, 1839.
Tofll whom it may concern Be it known that we, ISAAC LEAVI'TT, ADNAH GrrLMoRn,y and IVILLIAM STURTEVANT, of Turner, in the county of Oxford and State of Maine, have, invented a new and useful Improvement in lashing-Machines for lashing Clothes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
The nature of our invention consists in the combination of two luted rollers acting on a bed of rollers and the attaching of a rocker to one end of a weight-box, which box connected with the bed of rollers by cords which play over pulleys, presses the bed of rollers up to the two luted rollers.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
IVe construct a box or sink of any convenient size and in the form of an oblong', designed to contain the clothes. Across the middle of this sink we place two luted cylinders about six inches in diameter, parallel with the ends, rolling upon gudgeons and turning inward by means of gear wheels attached to one end of the cylinders, with a pinion wheel between them and a crank upon the other end of one of the cylinders, the pinion wheel supported by a standard on the outside of the sink. Beneath the cylinders in the sink we place a frame parallel with the sides of the sink and connected together by any convenient number of rollers, composing concaves corresponding with the fluted cylinders. Said frame and rollers are supported and acted upon by means of cords attached to each corner of the iframe and passing over pulleys placed on the sides of the sink, thence passing down upon the outside and attached to the corners of a box placed underneath the sink, the ends of this box projecting out sufficiently for this purpose. This box is to contain weights for the purpose of pressing the concave of rollers up to the cylinders between which the clothes pass on turning the crank. One end piece of this box is in the form of a rocker, (see 7, as drawings,) the inclined side toward the bottom board of the box and attached to it in the middle by a piece of leather passing through this rocker and bottom board of the box and fastened on the under side by a knot or key. rllhis construction assists the operation of the machine, for when the clothes press in between the cylinders and concaves of rollers, thicker at one part than another this washer allows the weight box to cant so as not to pull too hard upon any one of the suspending cords.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination of the two fluted cylinders with the concave bed of rollers, on which they act, and also the combination of the rocker with the bed of rollers, in manner Substantially as above described.
