Description

G. G. GOEDIKE. ES DAMPING ROLL FOR LITHOGBAPHING PRESS .APPLICATION MED FEB. 12 1918. Patented 00h 15, 1918 .Application tiled February 15%, 191%.
To @ZZ whom may concern:
Be it lmown that l, Grenen' Gn Gonnrnn, a citizen ci the United States, residing at the city or Chicago, county of Cook, State of illinois, have invented a Certain new and useful improvement in Damping-Rolls for Lithographing-lresses, oit which the' foilowing is a ruil, clear, andA exact description,
such as wl enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in whichliigure l is a plan view of a damping roll for lithographing presses constructed according to present practice.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a similar roll accordmg to my present invention.
This invention relates to a new and use- :tui improvement ,in damping rolls for lithographing presses, the object being to provide a roll having a surface covering composed of material woven or lmitted in such a way that it can be tightened on the roll, thereby preventing sagging. In thel present practice the outer covering 1s made of woven or knitted fabric the warp of which extends longitudinally the roll. This fabric is out the proper length and width and is then sewed on the roll, as indicated by the stitches in Fi l. The trunnions of the roll are indicate at l, the fabric is indicated at 2, and the stitches at 3. Ordinariy rolls of this character will wear about ten ays or two weeks when they commence Specication or Letters Eatent.

to sag and there is no way of elongating them to take up the sag and make them tight unless by removal from the roll and restitching, According to my invention the fabric 2 is woven or knitted with the strands extending spirally, the whole' forming a complete woven or knitted cylinder indicated at 4. This isl stretched on the damping roll and its ends tied as usual and then as the repeated operations of the machine cause the covering to bulge or sag at points, it is only necessary for one end lto be rei leased and the whole covering tightened on the cylinder by a longitudinal pull when the released end can be retied. This gives in eect a new damping roll and one which has a much longer life than the old form.
It is obvious that if desired, two or more of these seamless tubes may be used on the roll so as to form plies to build up the roll to the desired dimensions.
What l claim is:
A damping roll for lithographing presses consisting of a supporting body, and a covering composed of a diagonally woven fabric covering capable of elongation along its longitudinal axis and contraction across its transverse aXis whereby the sag of the covering may be taken up without removing the same from the roll.
In testimony whereof I hereto ax my signature this 6th day of February, 1918. GEORGE G. GOEDIKE. Witness:
ANNA E. JONES.`
