' Application illed Hay 15, 1926. Serial`1l'o. 109,885.
10 4stood I- by reference to the drawings in which A Figure 1 is a` conventional plan in enlar ed detail of a woven elastic fabric embo ying the invention, the web being shown l5 4strtched to the limit as it is when woven,
Fig. 2 is a plan the sameas Fig. 1 excepting that the web is shown partially contracted. I Inthe drawin :'-f
1, 2, 3,4 an 5 indicate a number of elastic warp strands'representative of those is, the right- twisted warp threads 12 and 14 pass over the picks 6, 8 and 10 and under the picks 7 and 9, while the left- twisted warp threads 12 and 14 pass over the picks 7 and 9 and under-the picks 6, 8 and 10.
In consequence', when the web contracts the binder warp threads being twisted so,
hard that they cannot be compressed, kink and automatically curl` with displacement to the right and left along the picks. The right- twisted threads 12 and 14 will `,swing to the left where they pass over the picks and to the right where they ass under the picks, while the leftftwiste threads will swing to thev right wherel they pass over the picks and to the-leftwhere theypass under the picks.
warp will not interfere in the sense of lessening or dulling any normal or proper stretch of the elastic strands especia ly at the bein thewoven fabric. gThesesstrands"areallnginning of their action inasmuch" as the wound or covered elastic strands like those customarilypemployed in an elastic woven fabric.
6, 7, 8,- 9 and 10 indicate a number of wefts or picks which cross the elastic strands at the back 'and are representative of the picks in the woven structure.
Each elastic war strand is bound to all the picks by a leno thread 11 whichpasses alternately back and forth overthe strand and la s under alternate-picks n opposite sides ci) the strand.
12, 13, 14 and 15y indicate binder warp threads representative of those in the woven structure. These threads are interwoven with the pick to lie between each pair of elastic strands. They are all excessively Ahard twisted threads; a twist about three times the normal warp twist is preferably employed. vOf these threads, the threads 12 and 14 are right-twisted threads and the The threads are arranged in such manner that a right-twisted thread will alternate with a left-twisted thread in a direction bdin'gr'or curling of the binder warp threads lwhen the elastic strands are contracted displaces the binder warp threads laterally away from 'the elastic strands, the binder warp threads only interfering to prevent more than a proper or normal stretch of the elastic. As there is no compression of the binder thread and hence no friction between the fibres, the web has unusual life or kick and comes back hard against the filling or pick. The web is, also peculiarly .soft and pliable owing to the iiexlble character of the binder warp especially when the web is contracted,- and the fact that the binder warp then has only loose engagement with the respective picks or filling.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1.V In a woven elastic fabric, the combination comprising elastic warp strands,
through the picks in the space between the elastic strands, said binder warp threads being suiciently hard twisted-to kink and An elastic webbing thus formed possesses peculiarly desirable properties. The binder M threads 13 and15 are left-twisted threads. picks, and binder warp threads woven 100 lengthwise the picks. In other words, it automatically curl with lateral displacement will be observed that `the right-twisted away from the elastic strands when the'elas- 105 thread 12 is followed by a left-twisted thread'13 and a right-twistedthread 14 is followed b a'left-twisted thread 15. The right and eft twisted threads pass respectively over under alternate picks, that bination comprising elastic warp strands, 1,10
tic strands are contracted to -an amount permitted by the drawing together of theA picks.
2. In a woven elastic fabric, the comstrands are contracted to an amount permit-- ted by the drawing together of the picks, certain of said binder warp threads having a right twist and certain of said binder warp threads having a left twist. 7
A3. In a woven elastic fabric, the com,- binatifon comprising elastic warp strands,
picks, and binder warp threads woven' through the picks in the space between the elastic strands, said binder warp threads being suiliciently hard twisted to kink and automatically curl with llateral displacement to the right and left along the plcks away from the elastic strands when' the elastic, strands are contracted an amount permitted` bythe drawing together of the picks7 certain of said binder warp threads having a rightv twist and certain of said binder Warp threads having a left twist, said right and left twisted binder Warp threads beingv alternately arranged' in `the weave and being woven to cross over and under, respectively, alternate picks.
