Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented @ct. 115, 1918.
7 Application filed May 1, 1916. Serial No. 94,552.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that l, HAROLD A. Fetus, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desks Show-Cases, and the like,of which the fdllowing is a full, clear, and concise description.
This present invention relates generally to improvements in articles of furniture, such, for instance, as desks, cabinets, showcases and the like, and the present disclosure is more particularly directed to a desk of the type ordinarily employed in laboratories.
The primary object ,of the present invention is to provide means for housing various articles within a desk, cabinet or the like, wherein they may be protected from dust, breakage and unauthorized use, and at the same time be rendered readily accessible when required for use.
A furtherpbject of my invention is to provide a means for the aforesaid purposes and embodying the aforementioned advantages, which will consist of a sliding panel, drawer, carrier or similar supporting medium, carrying shelves, trays or the like preferably adjustably positioned therein to accommodate articles of various dimensions, and so constructed and mounted within the cabinet, desk or the like, that it may be operated wlth facility and despatch when heavily or lightly laden, the possibility of jammin of the supporting medium in the desk, ca inet or the like, and the resultant upsetting of the articles contained therein by reason of its shifting from its prescribed plane of movement being eliminated.
My invention also comprehends a con"- struction which will readily lend itself to incorporation in existing forms of cabinets,
desks or the like, or wh ch may be economi cally embodied in new articles of the classes mentioned with a minimum of labor. Other advantages and avenues of use of my invention not especially recited herein will present themselves as the description proceeds, and would have it understood that l. have shown my invention as embocued a laboratory desk simply to render a clear and comprehensive understanding thereof, and that I do not limit myself to this specific embodiment or to the details of structure illustrated and described, it being obvious that various changes of the structural features may be made and that my invention is subject to a wide range of uses to which I am entitled under my invention in its broadest aspect;
I shall now proceed to describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawings and then point out with more particularity the essential elements of novelty therein in the appended claims.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of two units of a desk, such, as commonly employed for laboratory purposes, showing a preferable form of my invention embodied therein, inopen and in closed positions.
Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of a portion of a desk shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional end elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a portion of the desk with the panel or carrier housed therein.
Fig. 5 is a view in pers ective of two units embodying a modified form of my invention, in open and in closed positions.
Fig. 6 is a sectional side elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 5..
Fig. 7 is a sectional end elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 5, and y Fig. 8 is a top plan viewof the modified form of structure shown in Fig; 5.
Referring to the drawings in detail in which like characters of reference are employed to designate similar parts throughout the different views, 7 represents a unit of a desk of the customary type used for laboratory work having the supporting standards 8, each pair of which is preferably connected at its lower extremities by the base board 9. In lieu of the customary drawer or drawers, I position between each 'pair ofstandards a sliding carrier for supporting such articles or utensils as it may be desired to house or protect within the desk. lihis carrier is preferably composed of a rectangular front face or panel 10 made of steel, wood, or any other suitable material and has a perpendicular panel or partition 12 positioned at a right angle thereto 11 and rigid ly fastened to the 111116 face of the varying distances from each other, so that the shelves carried thereby may accommodate articles of different dimensions.
In order to guide the carrier in its movement and prevent tilting thereof, whlch might possibly result in jamming and the upsetting of articles on the shelves or trays, I have found it expedient to form a guideway for the upper edge of the panel or partition 12 by means of blocks or strips of material of a suitable thickness, such as indicated at 17, suitably fastened to the underside of the adjacent portion of the desk 7.
The bottom edge of the partition or panel 12, as will be manifest from Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, is spaced out of contact with the floor having a rail or runner 18 laid thereon, on which the roller 19, supported in bearings fastened to the bottom of the partition or panel 12, travels. The forward end of the carrier is supported by a larger roller 20, which may be secured to the partition 0r frontface of the carrier and which is adapted to run upon the floor of the room wherein the desk 7 is located, so that the carrier is at all times maintained in a true horizontal lane, regardless of the distance it is wit drawn from its housing formed by the desk unit members. To accommodate this roller 20, when the carrier is housed or slid home, the bottom of the desk is formed with a rectangular recess 21 (see Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings) an extension 10 projecting from the lower edge of the face or panel 10, which, when the carrier is drawn out as shown in the left-hand portion of Fig. 1, renders the roller 20 invisible and serves to seal the recess 21 when the carrier is housed, as shown in the righthand portion of Fig. 1, thereby efiectually preventing the ingress of dust and the like to the recess 21 and therefrom to the interior of the carrier housing.
In the modified form of my invention shown in Figs. 5 to 8, inclusive, the carrier is provided with a back member 22, along each edge of which is positioned a retaining strip 23, similar strips being located adjacent to the edges of the panel 10. The inner face of the panel 10 and the inner face of the back member 22 is each provided with'perpendicular rows of holes or apertures 16 for the reception of pegs or supporting members 24 (see Fig. 6) on which the shelves or trays 13 are adapted to rest, the shelves or trays being firmly held against lateral movement by their edges abutting against the partition 12 and the inner edges of the retaining strips 23. As will be apparent from the figure now being described, the form of my invention shown therein contemplates the employment of two rollers 20" carried by the base member 11 rigidly secured to the partition and the front face 10, in lieu of the single roller 20shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, the use of these two rollers insuring greater stability and putting less strain on the upper and lower guiding means where the carrier is used to house heavy articles. Similarly to the structure shown in Figs. 1 to 4, the rollers 20 are housed within recesses 21 formed in the base board 9.
Itwill be particularly noted that my invention as illustrated and described with reference to the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, by the omission of the back member 22 and the supporting of the trays 13 on the adjustable brackets 14 lends itself especially to the requirements of show-case construction. In a show-case, what is now shown as the top, sides and back of the desk unit would be formed of glass so that with the carrier housed therein, the contents of the trays or shelves could be readily viewed by the intending purchaser and when he had madehis selection, the carrier could be expeditiously pulled out on its rollers by means of the handle 10", whereby access to the contents of the trays or shelves 13 would be readily obtained.
As h'ereinbefore stated, it will be obvious that my invention is susceptible to embodiment in various articles of furniture and that various changes in details of structure may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new herein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a cabinet or the like, a movable carrier adapted to be housed within the cabinet, a partition forming a part of said carrier for dividing the cabinet into a plurality of compartments, guiding means within the cabinet, rollers mounted on the carrier, one of which travels on the bottom of the cabinet and the other of which operates independently thereof, the partition contacting andcooperating with the said guiding means independently of the rollers to guide the movement of the carrier.
2. In a cabinet or the like, a movable carrier adapted to be housed within the cabinet, a partition forming a part of said carrier for dividing the cabinet into a plurality of compartments, guiding means within the cabinet, rollers mounted on the carrier, one of which travels on the bottom of the cabieeneee net and is guided thereby, and the other of which operates independently thereof, the partition contacting and cooperating with said guiding means to guide the movement of the carrier independently of the rollers, a face member movable with said carrier and having a depending portion in alineinent with the last-named roller and the bottom of the cabinet having a cut-out portion to accommodate said roller and face member 10 so that when the cabinet is closed the face thereof Will be flush With the contiguous portions of the cabinet.
