'tO' split 'sheeflm'etal, "such' 'as sheet metal 'blanks for false teeth backingsrand other forms of sheet m'etal'blanks The objectof l ly-invention is to split a sheet"meta'l blank through its thickness as "of the upper die memberin aposltlon for the second step in 'fdrming up a comparatively large plate" or backing "integral with apin onthe'baeking.
A further object of my invention is to construct a die" forsplitting sheet metal blanks so that, by" acomparatively slight change in one" of its arts, it may be used for "splitting sheet metal blanks of various kinds'and shapes.
Another object of my invention is to construct'a splitting die so that a sheetmetal blank is held on eachside'orsurtace, on a linawith the splitting cutter, as the blank is being'split.
Myin'vention consists in the peculiar and novel construction""of a die for splitting sheet metal blanks, said die having details of constructiomaswill be more fully set forth hereinafter and claimed;

Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view similar to Fig. 4 withthedie'in theficlosed position and the sheet metalfb l'ankisplit' down centrally a predetermined distance a1id Fig 6 is an enlarged perspective view of a ia'lse tobtli tacking blank, after the same holding side bars 23. 23 down at each side of has been split in the die.
In the drawing 7 indicates my improved die for splitting sheet metal blanks, 8 a sheet metal blankfromwhich a false tooth backing isformed and 9 the blank after the same has been split in the die. V i
" The die 7 consists broadly of a lower fixed die'memloer l0 and an upper movable die member 11. The lower fixed die member 10 consists of a square base 12 supporting centrally a rigid vertical blank holder plate 13 otthe same thickness as the sheet metal blank to be split. This blank holder plate 13 has the cut out and shaped opening l l-at its upper edge so as to hold a predetermined lower portion of the blank 8 as shown in Fig; 3. 1 Thefupper die member 11 is shaped to correspond with the base 12 and has a stem on the top by, which the die is secured in'the press and a central opening 15 closed at the top 16 and sides 17. 17 and open at 'front and rear and on the bottom. A splitting cutter 18 having a concaved cutting edge 19 is" held centrally and rigidly in place'in the top of the opening. 15 against the closed top 16 by two side clamping blocks 20. 20 which are placed at each side of the cutter 18. The cutter 18 and clamping blocks20. 20 are held rigidly in place in the top of the opening 15 by bolts 21. 21, which are screwthreaded through the side of the upper'd'ie member 11 and engage with the adjacent clamping block 20. Each side clamping block 20 has a shallow recess 22 in its under side and opening into its inner edge, as
shown in Fig. 2. Two blank holding side bars 23. 23 are shaped to fit in the recess 15 at each side of the blank holder plate 13 as shown inFig. 1, and are held in frictional ,contaoton thesides 17. 17 of the opening 1 5 is placed in the opening'l l inthehol'der plate 13,'that part of the blank to be split.
restingjonthe top of the holder plate 13,"as shown in, Fig. The blank holding side bars 23. 23 are then. placed in the recess "15 in;the upper die member 11 ateach side of ,the' cutter 18 where they are 'frlctionally held by the spring 24. The upper die member 11 is then lowered bringing theblank the blank 8 and holder plate 13 and the cutting edge 19 of the splitting cutter 18 into engagement with the upper edge of the blank, as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4. The upfrom sheet metal as shown in Fig. 6. As the upper die member 11 comes down over the holder plate 13 the sheet metal blank 8 is held on each side, at the line of splitting, by
the side blank holding bars 23. 23 which follow down with theupper diemember 11 and cutter 18 until the split is completed. After the blank is split the upper die member 11 is raised, the blank holding side bars 23. 23 drawn out of the upper diemember 11 and the split blank 8 removed fromthe holder plate 13. 7 I
' It is evident that by changing the shape of the opening let in the holder plate 13, various forms of sheet metal blanks maybe aplit, by the use of my improved splitting 1e. Having ,thus described my invention I claim as new g 1. A die for splitting sheet metal blanks, comprising a fixed lower die member, a movable upper die member, a blank holding member in the form of a plate of the same thickness as the sheet metal blank to be split, on the lower die member, means for holding a sheet metal blank in the blank holding member, said upper die member having an opening, a splitting cutterin the opening, means for rigidly securing the splitting cutter'in the opening in the upper die member, detachable means in the opening in the upper die member and moving synchronously with the upper die member, for holding the sides of the sheet metal blank, at the point of splitting, and which follows down with the point of splitting, as the sheet metal blankis being split down.
2. A die for splitting sheet metal blanks, comprising a fixedlower die member having a rigid blank holding plate the same thickness as the blank to be split, means for holding a sheet metal blank'in the blank holding plate, an upper diev member having an opening, a splitting cutter in the opening,'means for rigidly securing the splittin icutter in the opening in the upper die member, detachable blank holding bars in the opening in the upper die member and moving synchro- Gopiesof this patent may be obtainedf or V V name to this specification.- nouslyiwith the upper die member, for holding the sides of the sheet metal blank, at the point of splitting and which follows down with the point of spliting, as the sheet metal blank is being split down.
3. A die for splitting sheet metal blanks, comprising a fixed lower die memberhaving a rigid central blank holding plate the same thickness as the blank to be split, and having an opening in its top shaped to receive a sheet metal blank, an upper die member' having an opening in its under face, a splitting cutter centrally in the opening, clamping blocks in the opening at each side of the splitting cutter, means for clamping the clamping blocks on to the. splitting cutter" to rigidly secure the splitting cuttenin the upper die, detachable blank holdingbars in the opening in the upper die member at each side of the blank holding plate, said I 7 blank holding bars fitting each side of the sheet metal blank and moving down synchronously with the upper die member, for holding the sides of the sheet metal blank, at
the point of splitting, and which follows down with the point of'splitting, as the sheet metal blank is being split down, and
means for frictionally holding the lank 7 7 holding bars in the opening in the upper diemember. .7
4. A die for splitting sheet metal blanks, comprising a fixed lower die member} having a central blank holding plate rigidly secured in a vertical position, and having the same thickness as the sheet metalblank to be split and an opening in its top shaped to receive and hold a sheet metal'blank, an upper die member having an opening closed on the top and sides and open at each end and on the bottom, a splitting cutter in the opening. and having a concavedcutting edge, a clamping block in the opening at each side of the splitting cutter, bolts screwthreaded throughthe die and enga 'n with an adjacent clamping block, detacha holding bars in the opening in the upper die member at eachside of the blank holding plate, said blank holding bars fitting each side of the sheet metal blank and moving synchronously with the upper die mem-' her, for holding the sides of the sheet metal blank, at the'point of splitting and which follows down withthe point'of splitting, as
upper die member.
I Inv testimony whereof, I have signed my ERICK BERNHARD PETERSON,
five cents each, by addressingthe Commissioner ot jatents, Washington,D.G.
