Be it known that we, FRANK H. CooK and CARLTON C. STANNARD, of Leominster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massa-` the punch is operated to cut the blank, and
to rise, when the plunger rises, to eject the blank from the die. In such machines the die is provided with a removable section, which when in placecompletes the. shearing edge of the die, so that a barrette may be cut from the sheet of celluloid or other ma terial, and which when removed forms a gap in the shearing edge to leave uncut that portion of the comb blank from which the teeth j project.
The present invention provides a novel construction by which the play of the plunger may be varied so as accurately to locate the face of the plunger, when it is raised in a desired plane. It also provides for ornamenting the comb blank in areas outside the face of the plunger, as will subsequently be explained in detail.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents in perspective view a mechanism embodying the invention, and arranged to make barrette blanks. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the same with th punch removed. Fig; 3 represents a longitudinal vertical section through the mechanism. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of the block plate. Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of the mechanism with the removable section displaced so that a comb blank may be made. In this ligure the plunger is shown as removed from the guide pins. Fig. 6 shows the removable section of the die. Fig. 7 represents a plan view of the die with the removable section displaced. Figs. 8 and 9 represent vertical transverse sections through the parts and illustrate the operation thereof on the work. Fig. 10 illustrates a comb blank.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 561,729.
Referring to said drawings, there is illustrated at A what may be termed a base, upon which is secured by screws or other fastenings a die block. This die block consists of two separable plates or portions c and d one superimposed upon the other. The die block is recessed to receive a plunger e which fits accurately therein, and the face of which is engraved or ornamented so that when the blank is forced upon it, said blank will have the ornamental figures or designs impressed thereon. Theedge of the die block plate c surrounding the aperture therein forms a shear or cutting edge with which coperates the punch f supported by and detachably secured to the under face of a cross head g guided up and down'by pins z, projecting upwardly from the die block.
The base AV and the plunger e `are provided with sockets clz e respectively to receive helical compression springs z' upon which the plunger rests and by which it is supported, there being naturally a space between the plunger Vand the base to permit of the depression of the plunger in the operation of Vthe Vmachine.
In order that the upward play of the plunger may be limited and the face of the `plunger accurately located with respect to the face of the die, the plunger is provided with pins or projections e2 e2 extending from its ends and lying in vertical slots or grooves Z d formed in the die block plate CZ as shown in Figs. 3 and fl. The plate c isunslotted, and through it are passed two vertical adjusting screws cf c whose lower ends engage said pins or projections e2 e2. By reason of this construction the upper surface of the plunger may be leveled, or the plunger may be adjusted bodily up and down without removing the die block from the base or removing the die block and its base from the press, since the slotted ends of the screws are accessible from above the die block.
The die block plate c is provided with a removable section j, which, when barrettes are to be made, iits accurately in a recess 03 formed in the upper face of said plate, when the section is removed as shown in Fig. 5, the end walls et of the recess c3 form shearing or cutting edges, which coperate with complemental edges f f on an extension f2 on the punch which is employed for forming the combs.

The bottom of the recess may be engraved or otherwise ornamented for the purpose of ornamenting that po-rtion of the blank which is outside the plunger, when the blank is pressed against it by the punch; For ex'- ample, the plate c is formed with a raised rib which is curved to conform to the outline ol' the plunger-receiving aperture in the die block so as to form a sinuous groove in the face of the blank. ln addition scroll work and other ornamentationv may be to receive screws or other tastenings which are last 1n their apertures c in the die block.
ln operation the die block, its base and the punch are placed in a suitable stamping press in which the cross-head g and its stem g are actuated bythe usual means.
