JAQOB S. BIRNZWEIG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DIE FOR, BLANKING OUT BUTTONS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 191 '7.
Application filed .Tune 26, 1916. Serial No. 105,841.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB S. Bnmzwnro, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New 'York city, Bronx county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies for Blanking Out Buttons, of which the following is a full, clear, and enact description.
This invention relates to improvements in dies for stamping out blanks for buttons. My improved stamping device is especially arranged to form blanks for buttons having a metal or other back provided with eyes or perforations for the passage of thread. These buttons are blanked out in cup formation, after which metal or other backs are secured to the blanks by means of a forming die (or otherwise) which is not herein. illustrated.
My improved stamping device is arranged to form the blanks, trim the same, and finally strip the blanks from themale die.
I will not proceed to describe my invention in detail, the'essential features of which will be summarized in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, wherein' Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved stamping device;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the male die portion of the device, the-spring being omitted, and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the female portion of the device.
As herein illustrated my improved stamping device comprises a male portion A and a female portion B, both of which consist of a plurality of slidably connected members. The female die portion B consists of a. support 1 having a counterbore 2 to re ceive the female die-holder 3, the female die being indicated by 4. The holder 3 is rigidly secured to the support" 1 by a setscrew 5, the female die 4 being yieldably supported by a spring 6, a shoulder 7 limiting the upward movement of the die 1. The support 3 also carries a cap 8 having a circular recess 9 and a centrally located opening 10 which surrounds the die 4. The opening 10 will vary in size to suit various size blanks. To form buttons of different thicknesses the blanks therefor, which are flat disks, will be of various diameters, the deeper the blank or cup desired, the greater the diameter of the flat disk out of which the cup is formed; hence, the diameter of the opening 10 must be proportionate to the size of disk it receives. The cap 8 is removable, so that for a larger or a smaller disk, caps 8 having suitable openings 10 may be substituted. The support 1 will be suitably secured to the bed plate 11 of any suitable p'ress, hand or power.
The male portion A, comprises a support 12 which is carried by or secured to the plunger 18 of the press. The support 12 carries a fixed post 14, which in turn carries the male die 15. The male die 15 is carried by a block 16 set into the post 14. The block 16 carries a shank 17 which passes through the post 14. A nut 18 serves to secure the diein place. It will be obvious that the die 15 is removably secured to the post, and also that the female die is removable from its holder 3. These dies are removable in order that dies for buttons of various designscan be substituted.
The post 141 slidably supports a cutting or trimming device 19 carried by a plate 20. Upon the post 141, and over the cutter 19, I mount a slidable abutment 21which extends below the edge 22 of the die 15. The abutment 21'is held'in place by a pin 23 which passes through a slot 24 therein, and also through a slot 25 in the cutter 19, into the post 1 1-. The abutment 21 is maintained in its lowermost position by a spring 26 located between said abutment and plate 20. The abutment 21 is arranged for an upward movement to expose the blank to the action of the male die and the plate 20 and cutter 19 are arranged for a downward movement to strip the formed blank from the male die, but the abutment and cutter do not have imparted thereto these movements at the same time.
To move the plate 20 downwardly, I slidably mount in the support 12, a plurality of pins '27, which are secured to the plate 20 and extend above the upper surface of the support 12 to strike the stationary head 28 of the press at a certain point during the upward stroke of the plunger 13.
To form a blank, a disk of suitable material (heated celluloid, for instance) will be placed in the pocket 29, formed by the opening 10 in the cap 8, over the female die. When the male die portion A descends, the abutment 21 will strike the cap 8 and come to rest, holding the disk down. A continued downward movement of the plunger will compress the spring 26 and force the male opening 30 in the support 3, which will turn the edge of the blank upwardly and form a cup-shaped element.
When the blank has been forced completely into the die opening 30, its edge, or the edge of the now formed cup, will. come 7 into contact with the edge '31 of the cutter 19 and become trimmed.
When the plunger rises the cup shaped blank will be drawn up with the male die and finally into the opening 82 in the abutment 21. WVhen the plunger has moved upwardly far enough, the upper end of the pins 27 will strike the head 28 of the press, whereupon the plate 20 and its cutter will be forced downwardly during the remainder of the upward stroke of the said plunger, and hence force the blank out of the opening 32. Upon the next downward stroke of the plunger, the parts will assume their normal position before the next blank is acted upon.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
1. A stamping device, consisting of a support, a holder removably secured thereto, a movable female die carried by the holder, the holder being provided with a shoulder to limit the upward movement of the female die, yieldable means to oppose the movement of the female die, a removable cap carried by the female die holder having a central opening surrounding the female die, and a male d1e to cooperate with the male d1e, a holder removably secured to the female die. 7
2. A stamping device, consisting of a support, a post carried thereby, a male die removably secured to said post, a vertlcally movable cutter surrounding the male die, means to operate the male die, and means to operate said cutter at a predetermined point in the operation of the male die, and a female die cooperating with the male die.
3. A stamping device consisting of a support, a post carried thereby, a male die removably secured to said post, a movable cutter surrounding said male die, a plate secured to said cutter, movable pins to depress said plate to operate said cutter, a spring to return said plate and cutter after the operation thereof, and a female die cooperating with the male die.
4. A stamping device consisting of a support, a post carried thereby, a male die removably secured to said post, a movable cut-' ter surrounding said male die, a plate secured to said cutter, movable pins to depress said plate to operate said cutter, a spring to return said plate and cutter after the operation thereof, a movable abutment, slidably mounted on said post, a spring interposed between said abutment and the plate on said cutter, and a female die to cooperate with said male die. I
In a stamping device, a support, a male die carried thereby, a movable cutter surrounding the male die, a slidable abutment adjacent the male die and cutter, and a spring tending to force said cutter and abutment in opposite directions.
6. In a stamping device, a support, a male die carried thereby, a movable cutter adjacent the male die, a movable abutment adjacent the male die and cutter, a spring tending to force said cutter and abutment in opposite directions, a female die movably mounted in alinement with themale die, and a spring to oppose the movement of the female die.
7 In a stamping device, a support, a male die carried thereby, a movable cutter adjacent the male die, a movable abutment adjacent the male die and cutter, a spring tending to force said cutter and abutment in opposite directions, a support subjacent JACOB s. enuvzwnre.
