PUZZLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD J. GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in, Puzzles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inthe man, or Within a closed link formed in connection with the figure, and likewise removed therefrom by a manipulation of the said apparatus.

This and other objects of the invention and the invention itself will be understood from a description of the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing.

Figure l is a front elevation of an embodiin the shape of a figure of a man, with a loop, here'shown as made of cord, about the neck of the man.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation looking in the direction of the arrow 6 in Fig. 1, and showing the cord and the apparatus in initial position for removing the cord from about the neck.

Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a portion of the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, showing the apparatus in an intermediate position of the operation for removing the cord from about the neck.

Fig. 4 is a section through the line 4-4 of Fig. 3 and Fig. 5 is a section through the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.

Referring now to the drawings and to the embodiment of the invention shown therein, the body portion of the puzzle is shown at 7 and is here shaped like the body of a man. In the embodiment shown the man is dressed like a soldier and one arm 8 is extended downwardly at the side, and, therefore, here, for all practical purposes, constituting a Specification of Letters Patent.

part of the body portion of the figure. At 9 is shown a projection from the body portion, which here consists of the head 10 and neck 11.

The head and body portion are here shown as in the same plane. The neck is offset from the head by an offsetting piece 12 and from the body portion by means of an offsetting piece 13. The parts 10, 11 and 12 are connected together by any suitable means, such as by the use of mucilage. The head and body portion are, in the embodiment shown, connected together by means of the other arm 14. I prefer to make the parts l0, l4 and 7 from the same sheet of material.

In the embodiment shown the fore arm 14 is illustrated raised as in salute, so that the hand engages the vizor of the hat or helmet worn by the figure. The body portion is provided with an opening 15, preferably cut in the breast of the figure. This opening, as illustrated, is circular. The body portion is provided with a hole 16, adjacent the periphery of the opening 15 and communicating therewith. This hole here shown as T-shaped, and connected to the opening 15 by a channel 17 A movable member 18 is mounted in the opening 15. In the embodiment shown this member consists of a disk which is rotatably mounted in the said opening upon a pin 19 which connects the members 11, 13 and 18. The member 18 is provided with a hole 20 adjacent the periphery thereof, and which opens through a channel 21 to the periphery. In the embodiment shown two additional disks are provided, shown at 25 and 26, each somewhat greater in diameter than the disk 18, and each mounted concentric therewith and one upon each side of the disk 18. These disks serve to hold the disk 18 in place upon the body of the figure.

At 30 i shown a flexible member of some suitable material, such as cord, made in the shape of a loop 81, and which is adapted to be placed about the neck of the figure or removed therefrom by the manipulation of the disk 18.

The operation of the apparatus is as follows: Assuming that the loop 30 is about the neck of the figure, the member 18 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 1 and a portion of the loop, illustrated at 32 in Fig. 2, is inserted through the opening as illustrated in Fig. 1 in the direction from rear to front of the figure as illustrated in Fig. 2. The strand 33 of the loop is placed in the hole 16 and thestrand 34 in the hole 20. The disk is then rotated in the direction of the arrow Y in Fig. 3, the strand 34 being carried around in the direction of the arrow Y until the holes are again in juxtaposition, when the strands of the loop may be withdrawn from the opening and from about the neck of the figure. The reverse operation will, of course, restore the loop to the position shown in Fig. 1. That is, if the free loop is inserted, as shown in Fig. 2, through the holes 16 and 20 and the disk 18 turned in the direction of the arrow X, the loop will be placed about the neck of the'figure.

Referring to Fig. 3, it willbe seen that the portion of the loop there shown in the hole 20 will, as the disk is rotated, be carried below the point 41 of the neck 11, (see Fig. 5), and as this part of the loop passes the line 5--5 in Fig. 3, it will be removed from about the neck of the figure, so that when it is again brought adjacent the hole 16, the loop will be completely removed from about the neck. This can be appreciated by (remembering all the time that the part 50 of the loop shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 is to the rear of the neck) placing a pencil at the point marked 51 on the loop and carrying the point of the pencil in the direction of the arrow Y to the point 16.

I have shown this particular embodiment of the invention and these details for the purpose of better describing the same. It will be appreciated that numerous and extensive departures may be made from the details thereof, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

I claim 1. In a puzzle, the combination of a body portion provided with a hole therein, a member rotatably mounted on said body portion provided with a hole therein and rotatable to place said holes in juxta-position, a projection from said body portion and a flexible loop adapted to be inserted through said holes and to be placed about said projection or removed therefrom by rotating said member clockwise or counterclockwise, as the case may be.

2. In a puzzle, the combination of a body portion provided with a hole therein, means forming a closed link with said body portion, a member rotatably mounted on said body portion provided with a hole and rotatable to place said holes in juXta-position, a flexible cord orthe like adapted to be inserted through said holes when they are in juXta-position, a strand of the cord through each hole and adapted to be looped with, said link or unlooped therefrom by rotating said member.

3. Ina puzzle, the combination of a body portion made of sheet material such as cardboard or the like provided with a circular opening in one end thereof, said body portion being also provided with a hole adjacent the periphery of the opening and communicating therewith, a head to said body portion and a neck connecting the same, means to offset the neck from the body and head and to the rear thereof, an arm to said body portion connected to the head and forming a link therewith, a disk of sheet material rotatably mounted in said circular opening and provided with a peripheral hole adapted to be moved to a position to be united with the hole in the body portion, a string or the like adapted to beinserted through the body portion with a strand in each hole and to be looped about said'neck when said member is turned in one direction and to be unlooped therefrom when said member is turned in the other direction.

4. In a puzzle, the combination ofa body portion of sheet or similar material provided with a circular opening therethrough, a head portion and a neck connecting said head and body, means to offset the neck rearwardly from both the head and body portion, an arm connecting the head and body portions independently of the-neck, said body portion being provided with a hole adj acent said opening and communicating therewith, a circular member rotatably mounted in said openingan d provided with a peripheral hole adapted to be placed" in communication with said first-named hole, a flexible loop of string or the like adapted to be inserted through the bodyportion with a strand through. each hole and to be looped about the neck by rotating said member in one direction and when so loopedabout the neck to be unlooped therefrom by rotating said member in the other direction,"and two other circular members larger than the first mounted concentric with said first circular member, one on each'side of-said body portion.

5. In a puzzle, the combinationof'a body portion having a hole therein, a head portion and a neck connecting said headand body portion, meansto 'oifset the neck from the head and body portion, a member rotatably mounted on the body portion and provided with a hole and adapted to be turned to place saidholes' in communicaprovided with an opening therein and a hole therethroughadjacent the periphery of the body portion and communicating therewith, a member movably mounted in said opening and provided with a hole adjacent the periphery thereof and adapted when said member is moved to a certain position to be placed in juxta-position with the hole in the body portion and united therewith, a projecting part projecting from the body portion and a loop of string or the like adapted to be partly inserted through said holes and when said member is rotated in one direction to loop said projection, and when said projection is so looped, to be removed from about the same by rotating said member in the other direction.

7. In a puzzle, the combination with a body portion of sheet material or the like provided with an annular opening therein and a hole therethrough adjacent the periphery of the opening and communicating therewith, a member movably mounted on said body portion and provided with a hole therethrough communicating with said opening, said member adapted to be moved to a my name this 19 day of January,

8. In a puzzle, the combination of a body portion and a closed link connected therewith, a flexible loop, and rotatable means on said body portion for looping and unlooping said loop with said link without opening said link.

In a puzzle, the combination of a figure made of sheet material having the outline of a man with one hand raised to the head and forming a closed link of the shoulder, neck, head and arm parts, a loop of flexible material, and a rotatable member mounted on the figure for looping said loop in said link and unlooping the same therefrom.
