Description

G. H. CHINNOCK Improvement in Sewing-Machine Carriages.
PatentedJuflel8 1872.
Wz'messes.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. OHINNOGK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,113, dated June 18, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. CHINNOCK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improved Carriage for Sewing-Machines and Carpet- Protector, of which the following is a specification:
The first part of this invention relates to a carriage or frame made of wood or metal and provided with casters for supporting sewingmachincs in such a manner as that they can be readily and easily moved from one place to another, and combining with said frame weighted serrated cams for rendering the frame stationary when the machine is being used, the serrations on the peripheries of said cams bearing against the carpet or floor and preventing the frame from moving, as it otherwise would do, on account of the casters. The second part of the invention consists in combining with a sewing-machine carriage having casters and locking-cams, as hereinafter described, a carpetor floorprotector, made of oil-cloth or thin board or other material, and secured to said frame to catch oil, 800., from the machine, thus preventing injury to the carpet or floor. In the drawing illustrating this invention, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the carriage and protector, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section, showing, specially, the weighted serrated cams.
A Arepresents the sides and ends of the carriage-frame, made of wood or cast in one piece of metal. a a a are casters secured in said frame, whereby it may be readily moved. I) b are strips of wood or metal, secured transversely underneath the sides A and near the ends. 0 c are cams, weighted at one of their ends and havingserrated peripheries, as shown in Fig. 2. These cams are secured eccentrically upon journals, preferably in slots 01 in the sides of the frame, or they may be attached outside or inside the frame upon separate journals; or upon a single shaft, as indicated'by dotted lines in Fig. 1. Bysecuring them in slots in the frame, or inside the frame, the camswill be better protected and. less liable to be broken off or injured. The frame, where the cams are secured, is strengthened by providing additional strips 6 e, if of wood or by double thicknesses of metal, if made of that material. Within the frame is secured a piece of oil-cloth, wood, or metal, B, which constitutes the carpet-protector, its object being to catch oil, &c., dropping from themachine.
The operation is as follows: The sewing-m achine is placed upon the carriage with its feet resting upon the cross-pieces b b, and having the protector B underneath it. The cams, on account of their eccentricity, weighted ends, and serrated peripheries, will always tend to catch the carpet or floor; and hence,'when it is desired to move the machine, said cams should be raised by the hand, for instance,
when the carriage can be readily and easily impelled, and when it stops the weight of the machine will press down upon the carriage, giving the cams a firm hold on the carpet or floor, so that the machine will not move when being operated upon. The protector B saves the carpet and floor from being soiled by grease, &c., falling from the machine.
It will thus be seen that my invention is useful in that it does away with the necessity of carrying the machine from one place to another, and also in that it protects the carpet or floor from oil, 860.
This device can be produced at a comparatively small cost, and will be found a great convenience to those using sewing-machines.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A carriage for supporting sewingmachines, provided with casters a and with locking-cams or eccentrics c a, substantially as set forth, for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with a carriage for supporting sewing-machines provided with casters a andlocking-cams c, I claim a carpet-protector, B, for the purpose specified.
To the above I have signed my name this 16th day of January, A. D. 1872.
GEORGE H. CHINNOCK.
