FORWARD HANDLE FOR FILES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1, 1918.
Application led August 20, 1917. Serial No. 187,139.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS J. SCHLEGEL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Forward Handles for Files, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to double-handled iiles, and it is the object of the inventiOn t0 provide a forward handle which permits of engagement from reverse sides and which is adapted to be conveniently grasped by the left hand of the operator.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a plan view of a file provided with my improved construction of handle;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the end portion of the file showing the manner of grasping the handle.
A is a file of any suitable construction and B is the usual rear handle therefor. In the use of the file it is frequently necessary to move the same in a straight line, which requires the grasping of the forward end of the le with the left hand while the handle at the rear end is grasped by the right hand. Usually this is done by grasping the for- Ward end between the thumb and ngers of the left hand, but this, 'if continued, will become tiresome. It is the object of the present invention to provide a handle which may be more conveniently grasped by the left hand and which is easily applied to the forward end of the file, the construction being as follows. C is a shank portion adapted to fit over the forward end of the file and having suitable means for locking engagement therewith, such as a cam D. E is a handle secured to the shank and substantially of T-form, the portions extending laterally on opposite sides of the shank. The handle is also of such a cross section as to form a convenient bearing for the palm of the hand to take the forward thrust imparted to the file. Thus, as shown in Fig. 2, the handle E is of an oval cross-section and the shank is reduced in diameter at F to permit the palm of the hand to bear against the rear side of said handle. The construction is also symmetrical, so that when the iile is reversed the handle may be similarly grasped.
The forward handle may be readily detached and attached by releasing the clamp D, and thus a single handle may be used for a series of les. Y
While I have described the use of my device in connection with the left hand it is obvious that for a left-handed operator this forward handle may be grasped by the right hand. c
What I claim as my invention is:
l. The combination with a le, of a forward handle therefor of T-shaped form eX- ytending endwise from the le and having its the forward end' of the file, the symmetrical Y aXis of said handle being positioned substantially in the plane of the file, and means engaging said shank for clamping said handle to the file.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
FRANCIS J. SCHLEGEL.
