To all whom it may concern:

- Be it known that I, Jnssn Lnwrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cherokee, in the county of Cherokee and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Horseshoe-calks, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to horseshoes, and more particularly to that class of horseshoes provided with detachable heel and toe calks.

The primary object of thepresent invention resides in the production of a novel form of calk whereby the latter will be firmly connected in the respective shoe sockets by the contact of a fastening device therewith.

Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a calk of the above stated character which shall be simple in construction, durable in use, and may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost, and one which may be readily connected and disconnected from the shoe, as the occasion may so demand. a

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.

Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a horseshoe provided with the improved toe and heel calks;

Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, 5 denotes the body portion of a horseshoe formed with a closed socket 6 at the toe portion thereof and closed sockets 7 formed at the heel portions of the shoe. The portion of 'the body of the shoe 5 forming the bottom wall of each of the sockets is concaved as denoted by the character 8 and the side walls are perpendicular. Detachably secured in the respec tive heel and toe sockets are respective heel and toe calks denoted by the characters 9 and 10 respectively. The bottom of each calk is curved to fit the concaved bottom of the recess and the side Walls engaging with the recess are perpendicular. One of the s1de faces of the insertible shank 11 of each of the calks is provided with a conical recess of substantially V-shaped indentation 12 adaptedto receive the smooth inner conical end 13 of the headed fastener 14:. The end of said bolt 14: is of less diameter than the recess in the calk, and the center line of said recess is located to one side of the center line of the screw-threaded hole 15 so that a cam action is set up when the conical end engages said recess. In other words, upon the screwing of the fastener 14 in the openlng 15 formed in one of the walls of the socket, the inner smooth conical end 13 of thefastener engages in the depression 12 of the calk and acts to move the calk in a direction and within the depression 8' of the shoe, consequently, positively retaining the calk within said socket against any accidental displacement therefrom. This form of fastener 14 illustrated in the preferred embodiment of the invention is adapted to be tightened by the employment of a tool in the form of a wrench, not shown; whereas the modified form of fastener illustrated in Fig. 4 is tightened through the employment of a screw-driver or the like tool, such tool not being shown. The toe calk is provided with an upwardly directed inclined pointed extremitylo to assure the animal of a firm gripping action upon the engagement of the animals foot upon the ground.
