UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM HATHAWAY, OF NORTHBRIDGE, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND CHESTER HASTINGS, OF MILLBURY, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED BUREAUS AND CLOTHES-DRIERS.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvementin Combination Bureau, invented by WILLIAM HATHAWAY, of Northbridge, Worcester county, Massachusetts.
This invention relates to apparatus for ironing and airing clothes; and consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1, Sheet 1, represents a front elevation, showing the parts extended as when in use. Fig. 2, Sheet 2, is a vertical section of Fig. 1 taken on the line w m. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the same line, showing the parts folded.
Similar letters of reference, 860., indicate corresponding parts.
This device consists of a bureau with drawers, with a folding top, and with recess in its sides for airing-frames, and with an extension back with airing-frames attached.
A is the body of the bureau, provided with drawers B B and a recess, 0, above the drawers. D is the ironing-table, which is hinged in front. It closes down and forms the top of the bureau when not in use, as seen in Fig. 3, and is opened for use, as seen in Fig. 2, where it is supported by the extensions E E, which are drawn out for that purpose. In Fig. 3 these supports are pushed in so that they do not show. F is a recess in the back of the bureau, to which is fitted a frame, G, consisting of side pieces H H, connected together by the handle I and by rods J and swinging rack K, the latter being arranged to hold up the cover L of the recess 0 in the top of the bureau, as seen in Fig. 2. M M are racks which are hung to the side Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,038, dated June 18, 1872.
pieces H H. When extended, as seen in Fig. 1, they are held in position by small wires or pins in their bottom edges, which enter holes in the top, as seen in Fig. 1. These racks all fold in between the side pieces H H, and are received into the recess F, as seen in Fig. 3, so that nothing is visible but the handle I. In each side of the bureau is a recess, closed by doors Q hung to the back of the bureau, to the inside of each of which are attached the racks N and O, the arrangement being the same on each side. The rack N is hinged or pivoted to the closet P at the top of the door, and the other rack is hung to the lower rod of N, and may be supported by the door or by the floor, as seen in Fig. 1, both modes being shown.
In this improvement all the requirements for ironing, airing, and folding away clothes are seen combined in a bureau of ordinary size.
When the apparatus is extended and ready for ironing purposes the recessG will hold the articles to be ironed, and, being ironed, they may be arranged on the racks or frames for airing, after which they are folded and laid in the drawers B.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A bureau provided with frame G, racks M M K, and back having recess F, as and for the Witnesses E. B. WILSON, M. A. WING.
