To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Anon.- L. HANSEN, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Evanston, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burner-Tips for Acetylene or other Hydrocarbon Gases, of Which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved, burner tip for acetylene gas or hydrocarbon gas which is so constructed. as to become sufficiently heated during burning of the gas to effect re ignition of the gas after extinguishment of the flame. In my co-pending application Serial No. 133,315, filed November 25, 1916, I disclose a burner tip constructed to effect re-ignition of the gas, the tip comprising a base with a fine orifice for projecting a tongue of gas, and a frame part having an enlarged bore or chamber for receiving the gas and having a restricted out let from which theilluminating flame pr jects, the frame prolonging and surrounding the blue zone of theflame and the restricted outlet causin such b-afliing or retardation as will cause t e blue flame to be in intimate engagement with the material, particularly at the end of the chamber. thereby to so highly heat the frame end that if the flame is extinguished, the gas flowing through the frame will be immediately re-ignited. The tip structure shown in the co-pending application is formed of a single piece of refractory material which makes it diflicuit and impractical to bore or drill the various bores of different diameters, the bores or openings of smallest diameter being at the ends.
The object of the invention of the present application is to produce a more practical tip structure, that is, one in which the vari ous bores can be more practically and readily made. In accordance with my invention the tip structure is of two parts, namely, a base part constructed to project a pencil of gas or flame, and a frame part adapted to be secured to the base, this construction greatly facilitating the manufacture of the tip structure. A tip structure embodying my invention is shown on the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side clevational view; Fig. 2 is an outer end View; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on plane 3-3, Fig. l, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on plane 4-4, Fi l.
The tip structure comprises the base part B and the frame constructed of refractory material such as so-called lava. The base has the conical inner end section 10 and the cylindrical outer end or head 11 separated from the conical inner end by the annular cylindrical flange 12. In the end 10 is the gas entrance chamber 13 and in the head 11 is the gas outlet chamber 14:, a partition 15separating the chambers except for the fine central orifice 16. Radial air ducts 17 lead to the inner end of the outlet chamber 14, the incoming air mixing with the gas in this chamber. By means of the conical end 10 the base B may be seated directly in the end of a gas pipe or in a metallic bushing (not shown) which is seated in the gas pipe.
The frameF is a cylindrical shell comprising the outer more inclosed section ,1 and the inner more open section f The lower end of the frame is of a diameter to receive the head 11 of the base and to sea on the flange 12, and the frame may be secured to thebase as by means of cement 0. At the outer end of the frame is the inner annular flange 18 surrounding the central outlet 19 which is shown as of considerably less diameter than the interior of the frame, the flange 18 serving as a means to battle and retard the blue flame whereby to cause such. flame to be in intimate association with the end of the frame to highly heat it so that when the flame is extinguishedthe gas will be re-ignited. By having the base B and frame F separable the various bores and orifices in the base can be more readily made, and the drilling or boring of the cylinder to form the frame F with its contracted outlet 19 can also be more readily accomplished. After formation of the parts B and I they can be readily secured together.
Thebase B is in itself a burner tip from which gas issues to burn in a long pencil with an inner blue non-carbonizing zone and an outer illuminating zone, but the gas would not be re-ignited after extinguishment of the flame. By applying the frame F the blue zone will be encircled and prolonged,.the hottest part being in the outer section f where the blue flame is bafiied, retarded and caused to form eddies by the flange 18, and to increase the heat retaining part F, both preferably co ies or this patent may" be" (strained for some time so that if the flame is extinguished the gas will be re-ignited. A number of small outlets 21 may also be provided in the section 7 just inside the flange and bead so that tongues of blue flame can be projected outwardly to lick the outside surface of the frame end.
The inner section f of the frame by seating on the base B serves to' hold the reigniting end section 7 a suitabledistance away from the base outlet, andthis lower section is more or less open for admitting air into the section 7. Sufficient opening may be provided by longitudinally slottii'rg or slitting the section f, or, as shown, air holes 22 may be drilled through the walls of the-section f".
The advantages of my two-piece tip structure can be more fully realized if it" is understood that burner tips, particularly the small tips for miners acetylene cap lamps, are made by'turning and boring solid pieces of soapstone or s'o-cal'led lava in its natural state when it is soft and fragile, the tip after the turning and boring operation being baked and hardened. In working on the raw, soft and fragile material great care must be taken, particularly during the boring and drilling operations to form the Various communicating passageways, chamber's, or orifices of different diameters. With my construction, Where the base and frame are made separate, boring and drilling can be accomplished in a more practical and safe manner.
I do not desire to be limited to the exact constructions shown as modifications can probably be made which would still come within the scope of the invention.
I claim as follows:
\ l. A burner tip for acetylene or other hydrocarbon gas consisting of a base art and a frame part, said base partbeing adapted for insertion in a gas conducting pipe and having an axial restricted orifice for projecting a stream of gas under pressure, said frame part extending from said base part and being open at its inner section to the inflow of gas and air, the outer section of said frame having restricted outlet passageway for gas and encircling and retarding the blue part of the flamewhen the gas is ignited to be heated by the retarded blue flame to a temperature which will cause reign-ition of the gas flowing through the gas outlet passageway after the gas is extinguislred.

31 A re-i-gniting' burner tip for acetylene or other hydrocarbon gas consisting of a base part and a frame part, said parts being formed separately, said base part being adapted for connection with a gas conductor and being" provided with an axial restricted orifice through which a stream of gas is projected under pressure, said frame part comprising an outer sectionand supporting means for engaging with the base part to position said outer section at a determined distance away from the base part orifice outlet, sa-id end section encircling the blue zone of the flame when the gas is ignited, and means in said outer section for baffling and retarding the blue flame in order to be im timately engaged by said blue flame to be raised thereby to a temperature which will cause re-ignition of the gas after extinguishment of the flame.
4. A re-i gniting burner tip for acetylene or other hydrocarbon gas consisting of a base part and a frame part, said parts being formed separately, said base part being of circular cross-section and having a restricted axial orifice therethrough for projecting a stream of gas under pressure, an anunder flange surrounding said base part in-' term ediate its ends, said frame part being a cylindrical shell seating at its end on said flange and around the outer end of said base p art, the inner section of said shell being open to the atmosphere, the outer section of said shell encircling and incl'osing the gas stream and having an axial outlet of restricted di-' ameter for the stream, said outlet restriction resisting the gas flow and causing the blue flame part of the ignited gas to be in intimate contact with said outer section of the shell whereby to heat such section to a temperature which will cause re-igniti-on of the gas stream after extinguishment of the flame.
