Description

E. C. KINCADE,
SAFETY LAMP.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 8. 1-916.
Patented June 5, 1917.
ill A ELMER C. KIN'GADE, F BEAUMONT, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO JOHN F. FISHER, OF BEAUMONT, TEXAS.
SAFETY-LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 8, 1916. Serial No. 89,876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER C. KINoAon, of Beaumont, in the county of Jefferson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to the type of lamps en'iployed by miners and equipped with safety devices adapted to prevent explosion of combustible gases that may exist at the place of use of the lamp.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a lamp embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional detail, and Fig. 3 a fragmentary plan.
As illustrated the lamp is shown comprising the usual oil font 1 and a superposed casing 2 containing a burner 3. 4: is
the globe and the lamp is provided at its top with small apertures 5 for the outlet of the products of combustion.
Surrounding and beneath the burner is an air chamber 6. A plurality of air tubes 7 are mounted in the casing and extend outward radially therefrom and at their inner ends open into the air chamber 6.
As shown in detail in Fig. 2 each of these tubes 7 has an enlarged orifice 8 at its outer end in which are mounted wire gauze screens 9 which extend transversely across the orifice, being held in place by rings 10 secured by a lock nut 12 tapped in the outer end of the orifice.
When a lamp embodying the foregoing feature of construction is lighted and taken into an atmosphere containing combustible gases the ignition of the mixture entering the lamp will occur at the point of the flame, that is at the burner 3 and it will burn back through the tubes 7 and expand the products of combustion, thereby forming a blanket of carbon dioxid or non-combustible gas between the screens 9 and the burner. This shuts off the atmospheric air supply and extinguishes the lamp. At the same time the products of combustion may escape through the perforations 5 in the lantern dome and thus prevent ignition of explosive gases by the lantern.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a miners safety lamp, the combination with a dome having fine perforations at its top for the escape of products of combustion, a burner and an air chamber surrounding and beneath said burner, of a plurality of radially disposed tubes entering said chamber and each having an enlarged orifice at its outer end and a wire gauze screen mounted in and extending transversely across said orifice, said air chamber and tubes constituting expansion spaces for the products of combustion of explosive gases to cut off the air supply and extinguish the lamp.
2. In a lamp, the combination with a burner and an air chamber, of an air tube entering said chamber and having an orifice at its outer end, spacing ringsin said orifice, a pair of wire gauze screens supported between said spacing rings and a lock nut tapped in the outer extremity of said orifice.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ELMER O. KINCADE. Witnesses:
SIMoN RUDNIGK, F. H. MCGINNIS.
