It is an object-of my invention to, provide a printing machine .in which the platen pressure will be uniform throughout the printing operation and which will 'prevent any inequalities in the type surface of the printing devices from affecting the impressions obtained therefrom.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a machine in which the printing is accomplished by a rolling pressure exerted ona printing device in a direction lengthwise to the lines of type thereon.
A further object of my invention is the.
provision in a machine for printing addresses and the like of a bodily movable roller platen adapted to exert pressure on a printing device between which and the platen an inking ribbon and the impressionreceiving m'aterial is disposed.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a hand-operable machine or printing addresses and the like from printing devices, automatically fed to printing position, by pressure exerted by a bodily movable roller platen moving in the direction of the lines of type on the printing devices. Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a base preferably of cast metal and hollow to support the various parts of the mechanism presently to be described. A magazine 2 isdisposed at the rearward end of the base 1 and is adapted to contain a plurality of printing devices 2. Slidably mounted operative on'the base '1 and extending longitudinally thereof are a pair of members 3, each provided with a plurality connected thereto at 5 and biased-upwardly by springs 6. The members 3 are connected y transverse members 7, thus forming a rigid frame which may be 'reciprocated by means of the link 8 pivotally connected at 9 to'one of the transverse members 7 of the frame and at 10 to an arm 11 preferably formed integral with an operating handle 12 pivotally mounted'at 13 on the base 1.
When the handle 12 is actuated and the members 3 are thereby reciprocated, the,
dogs 4' pass beneath the printing devices 2 in the magazine 2 and advance them successively longitudinally of the base 1 to a position above the printing bed 14 and beneath the ribbon 15 mounted on spools 16 and adapted to be advanced transverselyof the base 1 in either direction by suitable mechanism-which forms no part of my present invention and is accordingly not illus trated. An arm 17 is pivotally mounted at 18 at the rearward end of the base 1 and is normally held-in the position indicated in Fig. 2 by a spring 18 secured thereto and to a bracket 19 on the base 1. At its forward end the arm 17 is provided with a bifurcated member 20 disposed to receive the printing devices after they are advanced beyond the brackets 24 on the base '1 provides a guide against which the edge of the impressionreceiving material may rest to insure proper 'alinement of the impression. Pivotally mounted on a shaft 32 extend ing transversely of the frame 27 are a pair of links 33 connected by a transverse member 34. A spring 35 is disposed between the transverse member 34 and an arm 36 rigidly connected to the frame 27. A shaft 37 connects the ends of the links 33 and the yoke 38 is pivotally mounted thereon. A platen roller 39 is pivotally mounted on a shaft 40 extending transversely of the yoke 38 and an anti-friction roller 41 is pivotally mounted on the shaft 37 and engages the face of the platen roller 39. An arm 42 pivotally connected to a boss 40 on the yoke 38 by a pivot screw 42 (Fig. 4) and having its end in engagement with the shaft 37 is connected by a spring 43 to a lug 44 on the frame 27. The spring 43 normally tends to draw the arm 42 and consequently the yoke 38 to the position indicated in Fig. 6 in which the platen roller 39 is disposed in inoperative position. A lever 45 is secured to the arm- 42 and is normally held in the position indicated in Fig. 6 by a spring 46 secured at one end to an extension 45 of the lever 45 and at the other to a pin 46 on the yoke 38. The opposite end of the lever 45' is adapted to coiiperatewith the roller 47 mounted on the rigid platen arm 25 (Fig. 1), the spring 46 allowing the 'lever 45 to rotate as the frame 27 moves in the direction of the arrow.

The latch is provided with a cam portion 54 at its end which is adapted to coiiperate with an abutment 55 at the end of the-track 26 and, as will be apparent, when the latch 50 is actuated by engagement with the abutment 55 the lever 48 will be released and the spring 43 will move the yoke 38 to theposition indicated in Fig. 6. .Upon the return movement of the frame 27 in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 6 the lever 45 willpass beneath the roller 47. and, when the frame 27 is again moved in the direction of the arrow on Fig. 5 the lever 45, through itsconnectionwith the arm 42, will move the yoke 38 to the position indicated in Fig. 5.-
Upon continued movement the anti-friction roller 41 will engage a track 56, thus causing the platen roller 39 to exert the desirable pressure to accomplish the printing operation. A bumper 57 of felt or other suitable material is mounted on the frame 27 to prevent injury of the platen surface whenthe platen roller is moved to, its inoperative position.
The operation of the machine will be more clearly understood from the following brief description. A supply of printing devices 2' being disposed in the magazine 2, the
operating arm 12 is actuated to feed the printing devices forwardly to position above the bed 14 and in the path of the platen roller 39. As the arm 12 is actuated the frame 27 will be reciprocated above the printing bed and the mechanism is so timed that a printing device 2 will be disposed on the printing bed 14 and beneath the ribbon 15 when the frame 27 is in the position indicated in Fig. 6. Upon movement of the frame 27 to the left, viewing Fig. 6, the lever 45 will engage the roller 47 and move the yoke 38 to the position indicated in Fig. 5 and upon continued movement the anti-friction roller 41 will ride onto the track 56 to move the yoke 38 and the platen roller 39 into engagement with the impression-receiving material, which has previously been disposed by the operator above the ribbon 15 and in. the path of the platen roller 39. It will be noted that the movement of the platen roller 39 is longitudinal with respect to the printing device and the lines of .type thereon and hence the platen roller 39 contacts with relatively few type characters at any positionin its' travel. Consequently a very small amount of power is necessary-to operate the machine and inequalities in the surface of the printing device do not aflect the impression to the extent that the impression would be affected if the platen roller was moved in a direction transverse to the. lines of type on the printing device. When the frame 27 reaches the limit of its travel in the direction of the arrow on Fig. 5 the cam portion 54 of the latch 50 engages the abutment 55 to release the lever 48 and the yoke 38 is immediately moved to the position indicated in Fig. 6 by the spring 43 in which position it remains while the frame'27 is returned to the 'positionindicated in Fig. 6. The cycle of operations is then repeated, a printing device being fed to printing position above the bed 14 and an impression being taken therefrom at each'movement of the frame 27 in the direction of the arrow on Fig. 5.
It will be readily understood from the foregoing that I have perfected a printing machine adapted to accomplish desired results in a novel manner and by means of novel mechanism. .Itfwill be appreciated,

In a printing'machine, the combination of a bed, a magazine adapted to contain a plurality of printing devices, means for intermittently advancing p 'ntin devices from said magazine along said ed, a rigid support above said bed, a carriage mounted on said support a roller platen mounted to swing on said carriage, means for moving said carriage in a direction sub-v s'tantially normal to the direction of movement of said printing devices to obtain im-' 'pressions therefrom and means for swinging said platen to operative and inoperative positions relative to said bed.

In a printing machine, the combination of a bed, a magazine adapted to contain a plurality of printing devices, means for intermittently advancing printing devices from said magazine along said bed, a rigid support above said bed, a carriage depending from said support, a roller platen mounted to swing on said carriage, an inking ribbon disposed between said platen and the printing devices on said bed, means for moving said carriage in a direction substantially normal to the, direction of. movement of said printing devices to obtain impressions therefrom and means for swinging said platen to operative and inoperative positions relative to said bed.

In. a printing machine, the combination of a bed, a magazine adapted to contain a plurality of printing devices, means for intermittently advancing printing devices from said magazine along said bed, a rigid support, a platen carriage movably mounted on said support above said bed, a rotatable platen mounted to swing on said carriage toward and from printing position, an inking ribbon disposed betweerrsaid platen and the printing devices on. said bed, and means for reciprocating said carriage to move said platen over said bed in a direction substantially normal to the direction of movement of said printing devices.

In a printing machine, the combination of a bed, a magazine adapted to contain a-plurality of printing devices, means for intermittently advancmg printing devices from said magazine along said bed, a rigid support, a platen carriage movably mounted on said support above said bed, a rotatable platen mounted to swing on said carriage toward and from printing position, means for reciprocating said carnage to move said platen over said bed in a directionsubstantially normal to the direction of movement of said printing devices, and a connection between said carriage reciprocating means and printing device advancing means.

In a printing machine, the combination of a bed, a magazine adapted to contain a plurality of printing devices, each bearlng one or more lines of type extending lengthwise thereof, means for intermittently advancing printing devices sidewise from said magazine along said bed, a platen carriage, a roller platen supported thereon, and means for reciprocating said carriage over said bed in directions substantially normal to the diment of said carriage for moving said platen v to operative and inoperative positions relative to saidbed.
