To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN G. Sonnmmo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Avoca, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door or Sash Vises, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in door, blind or sash Vises and has for its main object the provision of a device for the use of carpenters or joiners, facilitatmg the holding of door, blinds, or the like, on edge when joining or fitting them for the frames.

Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described with minimum of part and maintaining a maximum of efliciency, thus creating a vise of simple and economical construction.

Vith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, cambination and arrangement of parts as will hereinafter he described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which like reference characters, in dicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of this invention, Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same, Fig. 3 is a View on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and

This invention consists of an upper member 5 and a lower member 6 pivotally connected together by means of a pivot pin 7 passing through registering openin s in the two members. The opening 8 in t e upper or clamping member, indicated by the dotted line in Fig. 1, is elongated providing a means of adjustin the members to hold doors, blinds, or ot er'such articles of various thicknesses, while the opening 9 in the lower member is screw-threaded to receive the'threaded portion of the pivot pin. The upper portion of the pivot pin is smaller in diameter than the width of the elongated slot so as to allow free movement of the upper member. After the article has been set, the pin is tightened, thus holding the members in their proper relation.

Each of the members 5 and 6 is provided with an up-turned end, which extends laterally and in oblique relation thereto, form- ,ing jaws 10, between which an article 11, 56

indicated by the broken lines, is held on edge so that an operator may work thereupon to the best advantage. It is to be understood that these jaws are to be of suflicient size to firmly hold the article clamped therebe- 60 tween.

The device is screwed to the floor or bench by passing a fastening element 12, through openings provided in lateral wings 13 formed on the lower member 6 adjacent one 66 end thereof. The lower member 6 also is provided at its opposite end with an upturned ear 14. which preferably is formed integral therewith. This member 14 serves as a stop for the upper member 5, when the 70 jaws are widest apart, so that the jaws will be practically parallel with the upper memher, when the upper member is against said stop.

The upper member 5 extends somewhat beyond the member 6 so as to provide a space between it and the support so that the fingers of the operator may pass under it to attain a grip on the end 15, which serves as an operating handle in causing the clamping action of the jaws.

In using the vise, the jaws are separated to the fullest extent and the article to be held therebetween is placed in engagement with the jaw on the lower member, and then the upper member is adjusted so that its jaw firmly grips the opposite side of the article. The article is placed between the jaws and the upper lever 5 i swung on the pivot pin 7, w 1ch is then tightened, thus securely holding the article preventing it from falling.

Although but one form of this invention has been described, it i to be understood that I may make such minor changes in construction and arrangement of parts as may be found expedient in the practical usage of this invention.
