BETSIE K. LOYLAND, OF THIEF RIVER FALLS, MINNESOTA.
PORTABLE SMOKE-HOUSE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1918.
Application led September 15, 1916. Serial No. 120,292.
To all whom z't may concern.'
Be it known that I, Bnrsin K. LoYLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thief River Falls, in the county of Pennington and State of Minnesota, have invented certain useful Improvements in Portof which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in portable smoke houses, one object of the invention being the provision of a device of this character which may be used by the house-wife to home cure meat of all kinds, and which, by reason of its size, may be operated cheaply and may be manufactured at a small cost.
In the accompanying drawings z- Figure l is a front elevation of the complete apparatus, the door being partially open to show the interior thereof.
Fig. 2 is a cross section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Figs. 3 and a are detail views of various parts thereof.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the supporting frame which carries thereon the frame 6 which constitutes the wood burning member of the present device for supplying smoke, a rotary blower 7 being mounted tlierebelow and operated through the belt 8 and the mechanism 9 so that the smoke may be driven from the frame 6 to the upper portion of the present mechanism.
Disposed above the wood burning compartment 6 is a casing 10 provided with the door 11 and having disposed therein a primary screen shelf 13 and secondary screen shelves l2. The primary screen shelf 13 has larger openings than the secondary screen shelves 12 in order that articles requiring more thorough smoking may be placed thereupon and subjected to a denser quality of smoke than those carried above the secondary screen shelves 12 which tend to refine and purify the quality of smoke. Disposed above and in communication with the upper open end of the casing 11 is the upper casing la, also provided with the door l5 and with the damper controlled outlet 16.
This casing has mounted therein a plurality of hooks 17 for receiving suspended articles such as hams, fish, bacon, and the like requiring subjection to a finer quality of smoke and more careful attention.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident that a portable smoke house made according to and embodying the present invention may be provided for every home, especially in the'country, so that the house-wife may at any time easily smoke any of the various meats, or where it is undesirable to smoke them, to dry the meat.
What I claim as new is 1. In a device of the class described, in combination, a supporting frame, a box-like member mounted thereupon, a casing connected so as to close said box-like member, the bottom of said box-like member being provided with an opening, a pipe connected to said opening and depending below said member, a blower casing connected to said pipe, means for generating a current of air in said blower casing, and a disk-shaped member formed integrally upon said pipe and resting upon the bottom of said meniber and serving as a smoke spreader.
2. In a device of the class described, in combination, a supporting frame, a burner compartment mounted thereupon, a closed casing for said burner, a blower fan mount ed below said burner compartment and communicating with the latter, a shaft connected to said frame at right angles to said blower fan, a pinion on said shaft, a counter shaft, a sector gear mounted upon said counter shaft and engaging said pinion, an operating lever pivoted upon one side of said burner compartment, a connecting rod pivotally connected to said lever and to said sector, a drive wheel Xed on the first named shaft, a drive wheel fixed on the fan shaft, and a belt trained over both of said drive wheels.
3. In a device of the class described, in combination, a supporting frame, a casing supported thereupon, u plurality of horizontally extendmg screens ol2 varying mesh, un upper casmg secured at one 51de of the main eaeingrand leaving a smoke receivingv ing, and menus for directing the Smoke up- Wnl'dly into the Casing and into Said Smoke receiving Compartment, the upper end of l0 said1 compartmentbeingH provided with a. se ries 0f exhaust pelnge-t Intestmony whereof l afHX my signature.
