CHARLES MATTHEWS, OF COLUMBIA, MISSOURI.
D RAFT ATTAC H M EN'T.
SPEGIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,800, dated November 27,1894.
' Application filed May 22,1894. Serial No. 512,103. on model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES MATTHEWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at O0- lumbia, in the county of Boone and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Draft Attachment, of which the following is a specification. r
The invention relates to improvements in draft attachments for heating apparatus.
The object of the'present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device, adapted to be readily applied to a stove, furnace, or similar heating apparatus for regulating and controlling the draft, and capable of being readily adjusted to permit a maximum amount of draft, to enable the draft to be entirely shut 0E, or to permit anydesired intermediate amount of draft, whereby a fire may be readily controlled to adapt itfor purposes requiring heat to be steadily maintained at a particular temperature.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended;
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a draft attachment constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 isavertical longitudinal sectional View. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional-view. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a draft attachment, illustrating a modification of the invention and showing a rectangular casing or drum hingedly mounted. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectionalview.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a drum or casing, which may be of cylindrical form, as illustrated in the first three figures of the drawings, but which may, as illustrated in Figs. 4. to 6, be rectangular. The casing is adapted to receive cold outside air, and to heat the same before admitting it to the fire pot or combustion chamber of a furnace, stove, or the like, tdinsure the proper amount of combustion and to avoid checking a fire by cold air. The cylindrical casing 1, which may be secured to a stove, furnace or the like by any suitable means,
such as hinging or the like, or form a part thereof, is preferably detachably mounted in a cylindrical flange or collar 2, which is provided with a depending supply tube 3, pref- .erably flaring or funnel shaped. The supply tube may be, if desired cylindrical, square, or any other shape, and it is secured at its upper end at an opening in the collar or flange, and such opening registers with an opening 4: of the drum or casing; but in cases where the drum forms a part of the casing of the stove or furnace the supply tube will be directly secured to the drum or casing.
A curved flange or deflecting flange5 1s located in the drum or casing, and is adapted to cause the air which enters the supply tube- The discharge opening 6 is regulated by a I damper 7, which is provided with a series of openings 8, and which is mounted on ashaft 9, extending outward to the front face of the drum or casing, and terminating in a crank handle 10, by means of which the damper may be readily operated. The series of openings 8 0f the damper vary in size. They are arranged in a curved line; and they are adapted to be made to registersuccessively with the discharge opening 6, in order to lessen the size thereof in order to control the admission of air into the fire pot or combustion chamber. It will be seen that an opening of the damper of the desired size may be readily arranged opposite the discharge opening 6 by turning the crank handle 10 of the shaft 9 5 and a scale or other means for indicating the position of the damper may be arranged on the front face of the drum or casing adjacent to the crank handle to'facilitate the operation of the damper.
In Fig. 4 of the accompanyingdrawings is illustrated a rectangular casing 11, whichis connected by hinges 12 to a flange 13 of a stove, furnace, or other heating apparatus. The hinges are arranged at one side of the IOC casing, and at the opposite side thereof is located a fastening device 14. The casing is adapted to be swung on its hinges when desired. It is provided with a depending supply tube 3, and it has within it a curved deflecting flange 5. The inner or rear wall is provided with a discharge opening 6, which is controlled by a rotary dasher 7 having a series of openings 8, and mounted on a shaft 9. The front or outer wall of the casing may be provided with a transparent plate 15 to enable the interior of the casing to be readily inspected.
It will be seen that the draft of a stove, furnace or other'heating apparatus may be readily regulated to control the fire, and to maintain the heat at the desired temperature; that the airis heated before being introduced into the stove or furnace to avoid checking the fire, and that the damper may be readily operated from the exterior.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
IVhat I claim is 1. A draft regulator for heating apparatus comprising a casing provided at its inner end with an opening designed to communicate with the fire-pot or combustion chamber, said casing being provided with a supply opening, and a damper consisting of a flat plate arranged on the inner end of the casing adjacent to the opening thereof and provided with a series of openings varying in size and adapted to register with the opening of the inner end of the casing, substantially as described.
2. A draft regulator for heating apparatus, comprising a casing having a discharge opening designed to communicate with the tire a series of openings varying in size, and adeflecting flange disposed opposite the supply opening, substantially as described.
3. A draft regulator for heating apparatus, comprising a cylindrical easing provided at its inner end with a discharge opening designed to communicate with the fire pot or combustion chamber, a supply tube communicating with the interior of the casing for the admission of air, a curved deflecting flange mounted within the casing and concentric therewith and located opposite the supply tube, a damper arranged adjacent to the discharge opening and provided with a series of openings varying in size, and means for operating the damper, substantially as described.
4. A draft regulator, comprising asurrouuding flange designed to be mounted on a furnace or stove, a depending supply tube mounted on the flange at anopening thereof, a casing removably arranged in the flange and provided at its inner end with a discharge opening and having at its lower side an opening registering with the upper end of the supply tube, a curved deflecting flange mounted in the drum and arranged above the supply tube, and a damper arranged adjacent to the discharge opening and provided with a series of openings varying in size, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES MAT IIEWS.
