The numerals 21, 22 and 23 indicate knives'of different shapes, but all having bodies of the same form, so as to snugly fit in the channel seat 5. A set screw 24, having screw-threaded engagement with the cutter head 1, is provided for detachably securing any one of the knives in the seat 5. Each knife 21 and22 is provided with a transverse bore 25 to receive the set screw 24 and the knife 23 is provided with a slot 26, which permits the same to be adjusted radially into the bore 2 of the cutter head 1. The knife 21 is designed to cut a tenon Y on the tip end of the billiard cue Y, and the knife 22 is designed to dress or smooth the tip of the cue Y at right angles to the axis thereof. The knife 23 is designed to circumferentially dress or trim the cue or tip applied thereto. As is well known, in applying a new tip to a billiard cue, the same usually varies slightly in diameter.
- The depth of the cut made by the knives 21 and 22"may be regulated by'a gage block 27 secured in the seat 6 by a set screw-28 and having its inner ends projecting into the bore 2 of the cutter head 1. By loosening the set screw 28, the depth of the cut made by-either of the knives 21 or 22 may be increased, at will.
The operation of the invention may be briefly described as follows The proper knife to do the work required is secured in the seat 5 of the cutter head 1 and the set screws 16 loosened. In applying the device .to an article, such as a billiard' cue, the same is held in one hand by one of the finger pieces 3 and with one finger. on the finger piece 13 of the cam plate 10, the other hand being freeto hold the article to which the device is to. be applied. With the device thus held, a drawing pressure on the finger piece 13 will rotater the cam plate '10 against the tension of,
the springs 15 and open the centering jaws 17 to receive an article therebetween. When the finger piece 13 isreleased, the springs 15 rotate the cam plate 10 and move the centering jaws 17 onto the article, or one Y;' The 'camslots 12 inthe-cam plate'10, acting. onthe cam pins 21 on the slides 18 ofthe centering'jaws 17, cause said 'jaws'to simul-Q taneously move in opposite directions with" equal radialmovemen'ts onto the 'cue Y.
providing the clamping jaws l7 with diverging sides, the same have contact with the cue Y at four distinct and circumferentially spaced points, thereby making the jaws ad j ustable to cues varying somewhat in diame ter. With the cue Y properly held and centered by the jaws 17,-the device is rotated by the finger pieces 3, onthe cue Y to produce the cutting action. While rotating the device, sufficient pressure is applied thereto to hold the knife to its work. To remove the device from the cue Y, it'is only necessary to loosen the screw 16 and permit I the spring 5to open the centering jawsl7. Under the rotary movement of the centering jaws 17 on the cue Y, a tenon will be cut on said one at the true axis thereof.

From the above description of the centering aws 17, it is evident that their action, in centering the cutter head on an object, is entirely automatic. 1
What I claim is r 1. In a device ofthe*kind described, the combination with a revoluble cutter head having an axial opening, of'a pair of slides mounted in the cutter head and having'de pending cooperating rigid centering .jaws extending through the axial opening there in, cam actuated means under yielding strain to impart simultaneous and equal radial movements in opposite directions to the slides and their centering jaws.
2. In a device of the kind described, the
combination with a revoluble cutter head having ways, of a cam plate rotatively extending into the axial opening therein; 7

and cam pin and, slot connections betweenf the cam plate'and slides.
3. In a device of the kind- 'desc'ribed the I combination with a revolublei' cutter hea'd having ways, of a cam plate rotatively mounted in the cutter head, a spring under strain to rotate the cam plate, coincident axial openings in the cutter head and cam plate, a knife carried by the cutter head and extending into the axial opening therein, slides mounted in said ways and having depending cooperating rigid centering jaws extending through the axial opening therein, cam pin and slot connections between the cam plate and slides, and binding screws mounted in slots in the cutter head and slides and having screw threaded engagement with the cam plate.
4. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a revoluble cutter head having ways, and finger pieces, of a finger piece equipped cam plate rotatively mounted in the cutter head, a spring under strain to rotate the cam plate, coincident axial openin 's in the cutter head and cam plate, a
knife carried by the cutter head and extending into the axial opening therein, slides mounted in said ways and having depending cooperating rigid centering jaws extending through the axial opening thereln, and cam pin and slotconnections between the cam plate and slides. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a revoluble cutter head having in its top face a pair of radial seats and in its bottom face radial ways, of a cam plate rotatively mounted in the cutter head, a spring under strain to rotate the cam plate,
coincident axial openings in the cutter head 7 and cam plate, a knife and a gage block mounted in the radial seats in the top face five cents each, by addressing Washington, D. 0." v
of the cutter head and extending into the axial opening therein, binding screws securing the knife and gage block in their respective seats, slides mounted in said ways and having depending cooperating rigid centering jaws extending through the am'al open.- ings therein, and cam pin and slot connections between the cam plate and slides.
6. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a revoluble cutter head having ways and a spring seat, of a cam plate rotatively mounted in the cutter head and having a lug projecting into said spring seat, a spring compressed between said spring seat and lug and under strain to rotate the cam plate, coincident-axial openings in the cutter head and cam plate, a knife carried by the cutter head and extending into the axial opening therein, slides mounted in said ways and having depending cooperating rigid centering jaws extending through the axial opening therein, cam pin and slot connections between the cam plate and slides, and binding screws mounted in slots formed in the cutter head and slides and having screw threaded .engagement with the cam plate for holding said cam plate and slides iinassembled relation in cutter head and for frictionally holding the same where set. r
