Description
JAMES J. CUTHBERT.
Lamp-Extinguisher.
N0.127,963. Patentedlune18,1872.
JAMES J. GUTHBERT, OF DUOKPORT, LOUISIAQTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF PATENT OFFICE.
OEHIS RIGHT TO JOHN F. NEELY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SE LF-EXTINGUISHING LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,963, dated June 18, 1872.
Specification describing certain Improvements in Self-Extinguishing Lamps, invented by JAMES J. OUTHBERT, of Duckport, Madison parish, and State of Louisiana.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a self-extinguishing lamp, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a 1ongitudinal vertical section; and Fig. 3 is a bottom view of my lamp.
A represents the bowl of my lamp, through the center of which passes a tube, B, connecting with the foot 0. Surrounding this foot 0 is a larger movable foot, D, from which four wires, or (1, connect with a vertical wire, 11, passing through the centraltube B. The wires (1. a radiate from the center at equal distances apart, and pass through ears 0 6 attached to the under side of the foot 0, and forming bearings in which said wires or rods turn. The upper end of the wire or rod 1) connects with the lower ends of two curved arms, G G, which are pivoted on rods E E attached to the upper end of the central tube B. To the upper ends of the curved arms G G are secured the extinguishing plates or caps J J. H H arethe wick-tubes, extending a suitable height, so that when the caps are closed they will be directly over and close to the ends of the wicktubcs. I I are springs to hold the chimney when the lamp is burning and is turned over by any cause, the edge of the movable foot D striking the top of the table first. The weight of the lamp pushes the movable foot up, whereby the outer ends of the fourwires or rods 0. a are drawn up, drawing down the wire orrod b and closing the extinguishing apparatus upon the top of the burning wick and extinguishing the blaze.
It will be seen that it does not matter how or in-what direction the lamp turns over, the effect is the same, to instantaneously put out the flame.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a self-extinguishing lamp the two curved arms G G, provided each at one end with a plate or cap, J J, and operated on top of a lamp by the rising and falling of a movable foot surrounding the ordinary foot of the lamp, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination of the bowl A, tube B, foot 0, movable foot D, wires 0. a and b, curved arms G G, and plates or caps J J, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
JAMES J. OUTHBERT.
