This invention relates -to improvements in bottles and other containers of liquid, though having capacity for a more general use" than such use as pertains merely to liquids.

That portion of it above said downward extension has the two shoulders 9, formed to slide along the top edges of the shell constituting said shoulder on the shell at the top of the trench. Its inner end is vertically shouldered at A to revent interference by the intervening portion of the neck with its close contact with the ordinary stopper. It is slightly enlarged at 8 in order that the downward pressure of prong 29 of the stop per lock may be intensified and the downward extension of it will be formed large enough to fit tightly into the gap. That portion of the pin (Fig. 5) between the plate, 13, and the point of contact between the side-stopper and ordinary stopper will be enveloped within the substance of the sidestopper in the process of manufacturing the latter.
The pin will have the head 11, comprising the ring 12, and the plate 13. It will also have the flattened part 14, the slot 15, the sharpened point 16, and the incisions 17. Said slot is a narrow incision in the pin, deep and wide enough to allow the insertion therein of said narrowed portion of the clip. The walls thereof slant at an angle downwardly from each side and meet at the base. If found necessary the inner or upper walls may be slightly beveled at the tops.
The clip has the middle part 18, the wings 19, the sharp edges 20, the sharp backwardly bent points 21, and the depressed shoulders 22. When incorporated in the side stopper, the middle part of the clip will occupy the slot in the pin, the shoulders, slightly separated from the surface of the pin, will rest within the slightly flattened spaces, 23, in the sides thereof. The wings will rest in angular relation to the pin, and said sharp points will rest near the exterior surfaces at the sides of the side stopper. I
The stopper lock (Fig. 8), to be constructed preferably of thin .sheet metal, will be attached to the portion of the bottle neck adjacent to and above the opening made for the side stopper. It has the loop or bent portion 24 which when in place will inclose said adjacent portion of the neck of the con tainer 25. It has'also the correlated holes 26 for rivets, the prong 27 the depending teeth 28, the prong 29 and the box shaped extension 30. For additional fastening means a small buffer having beveled or reduced edges may be inserted in part of the remaining open space above the looped portion of the stopper lock, at 34, said edges extending under the adjacent margins of the neck;
- and soldering may be used to fill the space above the buffer, said soldering to also envelop said margins. To facilitate said soldering operation, a thin'metal slip may be inserted between the stopper and neck, under said opening, for the protection of the stopper.
Before any of the other parts are put in place, the stopper lock, unriveted will be hooked over said portion 25 of the neck and riveted after all other parts are in place; that is to say, it must be emplaced before the ordinary stopper is inserted, because even a tentative emplacement of the stopper-lock previously might interfere with the insertion of the ordinary stopper. Nor should the prongs of the stopper-lock be riveted together until it has been pressed. downward into final place, because of resulting interference with the introduction of the sidestopper. Until the other parts of the device are emplaced, the bent portion of the mate rial of which the stopper-lock is formed re mains in an elevated position in the open space 6. The last act of assembling is the pressing down of the stopper-lock whereupon the teeth 28 on prong 27 will penetrate and bind the side-stopper, and the ex tension 30 of the prong 29 will contact with said enlargement 8 and inolose and impact the sides of the side stopper. The under side of the bent portion, or loop, of the stopperlock will now rest on the upper edge of said deflected portion'25 of the neck. Next, the rivets are inserted. Said extension 30 is rectangular relatively to said prong 29, and has the general form of a box-lid, minus. two sides. The rivets will be inserted through said correlated holes, to firmly unite the prongs, after which the aforementioned,or some other permanent, auxiliary fastening above and on the lock may be resorted to.
It is obvious, the yieldable characteristics of a side-stopper so. made being considered, that the sealing effect will be perfected by the coaction of the parts as herein above set forth.
The pin lock (see Fig. 9) has the knob 31 on which are the shoulders 32, to rest, as seen in other figures on the margins of the opening in the shell of the neck on that side.- It will also have the hollow extension 33, said hollow to be filled with soldering or other clenching substance, said hollow to inclosethe pin point and the incisions thereon the extent of penetration of the pin point therein to be governed and gaged by the degree of force which is to be applied through the plate to the side-stopper for impacting and tightening the latter. The previously described method is one practical means for effecting permanent engagement between said neck and pin point, though there may be other and preferable means. The shoulder of the knob will not cover all of said opening in the shell of the neck of the container, and room will be left for the insertion of a nipper, or other tool to break off the pin-point.

'In said act of pulling out the pin, the shoulders of the clip'will be forced back into contact with the pin and will arrest the backward movement of the wings.
The destruction of the function of the side stopper, of peculiar formation, which would exposeany substance which might be thereafter deposited in the container to at mospheric, and" other kinds of, contamination through the open trench, would alone afford a safeguard against further or fraudulent use being made of the container, but my invention comprisesthe additional safe guard involving t e destruction, or at least impairment, of the functions of the pin, as above set'fo rth. 1

An article of the class described, comprising a bottle having in its neck a vertical interior trench, opening upwardly and outside the normal neck, with corresponding modification of the rotundity of the wings and between them a narrowed neck, a stopper for the ordinary mouth, a side-stopper fitted into a side-opening in the neck and within the top opening" of the trench, to constitute, in con unctionwith the ordinary stopper, a seal, and means 'for locking both stoppers in place.
2. An article of the class described, comprising a bottle having in its neck a vertical interior trench, opening upwardly and outside the normal neck, with corresponding modification of the rotundity oi the neck, a stopper for the ordinary mouth, a side stopper, fitted into a side opening in the neck and within the top opening of the trench, to constitute, in conjunction with the ordinarystopper, a seal,and means for look ing both stoppers in place, consisting of a retaining pin passed through them, and fastened on the side-stopper and on the neck opposite said side-stopper, the fastening means on said opposite side consisting of a shouldered knob having a hollow extension filled with a gripping substance for enveloping and binding the corrugated point of the 'pin; also means for bisecting the sidestopper and rendering it useless for the same purpose subsequently, said means consisting of a clip carried by the pin, said clip having two sharp edged and pointed wings and between them a narrowed portion insertible in a slot formed in the, pin, said wings enveloped in the substance of thesidestopper and having a plunging andoutward movement, resulting from withdrawal of the pin.

An article of the class described comprising a bottlehaving in its neck vertical interior trench, opening upwardly and outside the normal neck, with corresponding modification of the rotundity of the neck, a stopper for the ordinary mouth, a side-stopper fitted into a side opening in the neck and within the top opening of the trench "to constitute, in conjunction. with the ordinary stopper, a seal, and means for locking both stoppers in place, consisting of a retaining pin passed through them, secured on the slde-stopper, also on the neck opposite said side-stopper with a shouldered knob having a hollow extension filled with a gripping substance for enveloping and binding the corrugated point of the pin;
also means for bisecting the side-stopper and rendering it useless for the same purpose subsequently, said means consisting of a pin extending through the side-stopper from end to end and transversely through the stopper in the top mouth and carrying a clip having twosha-rp edged and pointed portion msertible in a slot formed in the pin, the portion of the pin connected with the clip and the clip enveloped in the substance of the side-stopper, sald clip having a plunging outward movement, resulting from withdrawal of the pin, said pin and its said adjuncts coacting with a locking device adapted to impinge the interior end of the side-stopper during the process of withdrawing the pin, the locking device consisting of a member attached to the neck of the bottle through openings therein and carrying sharply pointed teeth adapted to penctrate, impinge and bind the inner end of the side-stopper, thus giving effect to the bisecting action of the clip member upon the application of pull force to the pin in said act of bisection, as described herein.
4:. In an article of the class described comprising a bottle, stopper and looks, a retaining pin passed through a side-stopper from end to end and transversely through the stopper, said pin having engagement against the outer end of the side-stopper through a plate and on the opposite side of the neck in a hollow member filled with a gripping substance adapted to envelop and firmly engage spurs formed on the point of the pin, said hollow member being an extension of a shouldered knob resting on the outer surface of the neck.

In an article of the class described, the combination of a bottle, stopper and sidestopper with a retaining pin passed through a side-stopper from end to end and transversely through the stopper, said pin having engagement against the outer end of the side-stopper through a plate, and on the opposite side of the neck in a hollow member filled with a gripping substance adapted to envelop and firmly engage spurs formed on the point of the pin, said hollow member being extended from a shouldered knob through an opening in the shell of the neck.

In an article of the class described, the combination with a bottle and a closure for the bottle comprising a stopper and sidestopper, of means for bisecting and rendering the side-stopper unfit for subsequent use, said means consisting of a clip carried in a slot formed in a pin, said clip having two ends, each end having a sharp point and sharp edges on each side slanting at only a slight angle from the sharppoint, a narrow neck connecting the two, ends of the clip, and depressed shoulders adapted to engage the pin, upon the application of pull force to the pm, said pin and clip being enveloped in the substance of the side-stopper and adapted to tear apart the two ends of the side-stopper as a result of said application to the pin of pull force.
7 In an article of the class described, comprising a bottle having in its neck a vertical interior trench opening upwardly and outside the normal neck, with corresponding modification of the rotundity of the neck, a stopper for the ordinary mouth, a side-stopper of yieldable material fitted into a side opening in the neck and within the top opening of the trench, and means for locking the side-stopper in place, the combination with a retaining pin passed through both stoppers and through two opposite openings in the neck of a plate on the end of the pin beyond the side-stopper, adapted to be pressed. against and to impact the side-stopper, and simultaneously with the act of so pressing and impacting, to be suitably fastened through the opening on the opposite side of the neck.

In an article of the class described, comprising a bottle, stopper and side-stopper, together constituting a seal, and means for interlocking them, a side-stopper shouldered on its lower portion from end to end and on one end vertically, having also a vertical groove in its vertically shouldered end, also an enlargement on its upper side, said side stopper being adapted to be fitted and im pacted into an opening in the neck for the bottle and simultaneously into a gap formed in the shell of the neck adjacent to the opening and into the mouth of a vertical interior trench formed in the neck.

The combination of a bottle member having a neck in which are a plurality of side openings, and a stopper for a side opening in the neck and a' pin for fastening the side-stopper and ordinary stopper through both stoppers and side openings in the neck of the bottle, with a locking and binding fastener for the side stopper consisting of a member bent on and over a portion of the bottle neck left intact between two of the openings therein, said member having two prongs, one to extend downwardly inside said intact portion of the bottleneck, its lower extremity sharply toothed, the other prong to extend downwardly outside said intact portion of the bottle neck, its lower extremity having extension outwardly over the space provided for the side stopper, said extension comprising a top and two side portions for depressing and compressing the side stopper, upon final assemblage and emplacement.
