To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE M. .D1:1A- SON, a citizen of the -United States, residing at Carnegie, in the county of Gaddo, State of Oklahoma, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Spool and Needle Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same This invention relates to a comblned spool and needle holder and has for its primary object the provision of. an article of simple and inexpensive constructlon 1n which spools and needles may be placed and safely kept while at the same time being readily accessible for use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined spool and needle holder, embodying a minimum number of parts so assembled as to produce an exertmely compact article and one in which both the needles and spools may be conveniently placed and removed.
With the above and other objects of similar nature in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, my combined article consists of a hollow open ended cylindrical member 5, having extended across one of its ends and permanently fixed in any desired manner thereto, a bridge piece 6. The member 5 is preferably of such dimensions as to accommodate two ordinary spools of thread, the spools being arranged end to end and being freely rotatable within the cylinder. A retaining member 7 similar in construction to the bridge piece 6, is hinged to the other end of the cylinder to extend thereacross and prevent accidental displacement of the spools, it being releasably maintained in operative position as will subsequently be explained. The cylinder 5, bridge piece 6 and retainer 7 are all preferably to be constructed of celluloid or similar light and inexpensive material.
1 Provided in the wall ofthe cylinder areia pair of spaced openings. 8 through which the thread may be freely drawn from the corresponding spools, while connecting these openings and leading from the receiving end ofthe cylinder is a tortuous slot ,9 which permitsof introducing the threads into the opening and at the same time, affords a means for holding the thread against withdrawal when the device-isnot in use.
The needle holder is shown at 10, and consists; of an elongated strip, preferably of spring steel, which is arranged exteriorly of the cylinder and suitably secured thereto as at 11. Provided in the outer face of the strip are a plurality of longitudinal grooves 12 in which needles are adapted to be placed, the strip to be magnetized to retain the needles in position. To facilitate removal of the needles from the grooves, the outer face of the strip is reduced in thickness as at 13 so that the needles may be readily grasped by the fingers.
The strip 10 is extended beyond the receiving end of the cylinder and sharpened along one of its edges to provide a thread cutter 14 The under face of this extended portion of the strip is provided with a shoulder 15 for engaging the free end of the retaining member 7 to hold it in closing relation to the cylinder. The strip 10 being of steel, its extended endis yieldable and may be sprung to release the retaining member so that the spools may be intro-.
duced into or removed from the cylinder.
It will be noted that the bridge piece 6 and retaining member are both provided with an openlng 16 adapted to register with the usual openings in the spools. These openings permit of employing the device upon a sewing machine, the spool standard passing therethrough as is evident.
It will thus be seen that the member 10 has a number of uses in combination with other elements of the structure. In the first place, by reason of bein r made of steel, it
serves to reinforce the ce lluloid cylinder 5;
being extended beyond the end of the cylinder and provided with a sharpened edge, the thread from either opening 8 may be drawn out and around this sharpened edge, to cut the thread. Again by reason of being spring steel, it serves as a latch for movement into and out of engagement over the loose end of the retainer 7 and being made of spring steel to give it proper resiliency to act as a latch, it may be permanently magnetized to serve as a needle holder. Furthermore, being of spring steel, it yieldingly resists distortion of the cylinder and correspondingly better prevents breaking of the cylinder. This element, the member 10, having thus a reinforcing function with respect to the cylinder and a thread cutting function which the cylinder assists by reason of the thread being drawn abruptly against the side of the perforation of the cylinder and then around the surface of the cylinder, thus holding the thread against movement from the spool when drawn against the knife blade and having also the latching function in connection with the member 7, is in combination with the particular cylinder with its perforation and the retainer 7 What I claim is":-
In an article of the class described the combination with a spool-holding cylinder having a perforation through its side, of a guard hinged to one side of an end of the cylinder for movement into and out of position with its opposite end upon the end of the cylinder wall at a diametrically opposite point from the hinge and angularly remote from the perforation and a spring steel strip secured against the outer face of the cylinder and extending throughout its length and beyond said end having the guard, said extending portion of the strip having a shoulder disposed for movement into and out of engagement over the unhinged end of the guard, the longitudinal edge of the strip remote from the perforationbeing sharpened.
