Description

UNITEDSTATES "WARREN HOLDEN, or rHILADELPHrA,"PENNsYLvANm. i
' To all whom t maf/concern: .i
Q; Boor ANn SHOE, sfrnnrciinn Specification formingpart of Letters` fatemi No. `12,?793,datedv May '1, 1855; Rveissued March 12, i i i l i i `1s7`2,No.4,799. j
Be i known thatl, `VARREN the` city and county of "Philadelphia and `State of Pennsylvania, `haveinvented a new and Improved `Device for Stretching Boots andShoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a` full, i clear, nand` exact 'description of the same, reference being had to `the `annexed `drawings,"making a part of x this specificatiomin which- Figure 1,"i`sa longitudinal section of my j improvement.. Fig.`2, is axplan or top view of ditto. i Fig. 3, is a side view of ditto.
` Similar letters of` reference indicate cor responding parts inthe several figures. e
The nature of my invention consists in dividing a last into aenumber `of parts and forcing outward said parts by means of a device formed of levers and a screw, so that be stretched as will be `hereafter fully shown screw (Z) is turned by a wrench or key and i `To enable `others the desired parts ofltheshoe orboot may anddescribed..A w i j `Skilled in the art `to make and use myinvention, I" will proceed to describe its construction and operation. j
A represents the last, `formed of four `parts, (a) representsdftheback part, (b)
represents the insteppart, (c), (c): repre` i sent `the two parts forming the main pore e tion or bodyof the last, the latter parts being-formed by a longitudinal cut. e y Thetwoparts (c) (o)` areconnectedV near the front end by a link (d), see Figs. l and 2, and the back ends "ofthe parts (c) (e) f are connected to the back part (a) by hori- `zontal wires or rods (e) (e) which t `loosely in holes or apertures in the parts.
The instep part (b) is connected to the back part (a) by'wires (f) (f) which pass loosely or freely lntol holes or apertures in y `the part `(00); f i W u s `f f `In the inner `.sides of the parts (of) `(c) there is cut a groove or recess (g),\one in `each part (c) and there lisalso amortise (la),
` made `through. the back part (a) which is [in line with the grooves or recessesfg).
y made Thereis also `agroove por" recess (i which in the inner sides of the parts (o is" rather more inclinedthan the groove or `recessl(g). The groove orrecess (i) is `also e with the mortise (Min the part (a). e Y
Withinthe grooveor recess g.) or in the groove or recess there is placed a device formeduof jointedlevers which are connected to each end of two nuts (la), see Fig. l, and dott-ed lines in Fig. 2. Through theftwonuts (la) a screw (Z) passes, said screw having a collar at its outer end.A Oni the outer sidesof'the parts of the lasts there are attached knobs spot, the levers (j) (j) being inserted in the groove or recess (g). The side of the boot or shoe to bestretched is moistened and the the sides (c) (c) are forced outward by the expansion of the jointed levers (j) (j) and the moistened parts of the boot or shoe will ed, the parts being held by the rods (c) which if necessary may be provided with joints. j i
. If the instep requires stretching the levers are placed in the groove or recess (c) one over the other, as shown in Fig.` l, and the levers then expand vertically and stretch the instep. It being understood that the levers are placed horizontally, or side by side` when in the groove or recess (g) so `as to expand laterally when acting upon the two parts (c) (c).
The levers (j) (j), nuts (7c) (la), and rod (Z) are constructed of metal. The last is constructed of wood and the knobs (n) may be 0f iron with small rods or spurs to fit in recesses or holes in the outer sides of said parts outward so as to stretch the boot the parts. I do not confine myself hoW- or shoe, at any desired part, or at all parts, ever to any particular material. by means of the device composed of the A general stretching may be given the jointed levers (j) (j) nuts (7c) (7c) and rod 5 boot or shoe,- by removing all the knobs (Z) as herein shown and described.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is WARREN HOLDEN' Dividing the last A into a number of Witnesses: parts (a) (b) (c (c) connected by rods LEMUEL STEPHENS, 10 (e) (e) (f) (f) and a link (d) and forcing GEO. I. BECKER.
