NATHANIEL JONES, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT m TRUSSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,890, dated J nne 11, 1872.
I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, NATHANIEL JONES, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Trusses; and the following is declared to be a correct description of the same.
This truss is designed as a support to the body at the groin and near the front portion of the base of the pelvis.
In Letters Patent granted to me September :26, 1871, a truss-plate is shown in a form adapted to an umbilical hernia. The present, invention is an improvement on the same; and consists of a truss made of a metal plate wit l the edges bent back, and the end portions of) the plate thrown forward and extending downward to fit the groin at one or both sides contiguous to the front and lower part of the pel vis and lower portion of the abdomen, thereby supporting the body at that portion where ruptures most frequently occur; and this plate dispenses with the separate pads heretofore considered essential, and furnishes a light and convenient truss adapted to a large proportion of the hernias; and, by making plates of different dimensions, the truss is adapted to the varying sizes-of pelvis.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a view of the face or front of the plate. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same; and Fig. 3 represents one end of the plate.
' The general outline of this plate is represented in Fig. 1, from which it will be seen that the plate a is made narrow at the central portion and extended downward at the portions b b so as to fit into the groin, and the edges of the plate are bent back so as not to come into contact with the surface of the body, and the parts b are rounded and thrown forward so as to project into the cavities of the groin at each side of the front lower portion of the pelvis.
By increasing the distance between the projecting portions b b the plate is adapted to a larger pelvis or the reverse. To accomplish this, the plate a may be made in two parts, lapping upon each other, and extensible at the middle portion; but I prefer to employ plates pressed up in dies of difierent sizes.
The plate is preferable when perforated with numerous small holes to allow perspiration to pass away, and the straps that hold the same in place connect to the back of the plate.
A slotted plate, 01, may be employed for receiving the hooks at the ends of the straps, as in Letters Patent granted to me September 26, 1871.
I claim as my invention The metallic truss-plate with the edges bent back, and the downward extension b b bent forward or inward out of the plane of the pad to lit the groin, and the part contiguous to the pelvis thrown outward from the plane of the pad, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
