STOVEPIIE'E-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1918.
Application filed December 14, 1917. Serial No. 207,160.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROY B. MANNON, a citizen of the United States, residing at London Mills, in the county of Fulton and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stove pipe locks and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a lock of simple and durable form having means for engaging the thimble of a chimney flue whereby the said parts are securely held together. The lock is further provided with means for attachment with a stove pipe section in a manner to securely hold the same and prevent the escape of smoke or gases.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side view of the lock;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a thimble used in the lock.
Fig. 3 is a similar view of a sleeve used in the lock.
Fig. 4: is a similar'view of an end portion of a pipe used in the lock.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the thimble 1 is adapted to be secured in the flue of a chimney in a usual manner. The said thimble is provided at its sides with slots 2.
A sleeve 3 is adapted to be inserted in the thimble 1 and the said sleeve 3 is provided at its sides with catches a which are adapted to engage in the slots 2 of the thimble l. The said catches are composed of flexible strips 5 which are secured at one end to the inner surface of the sleeve 3 and the said strips 5 carry pins 6 which pass through the sides of the sleeve 3 and are adapted to engage in the slots 2 of the thimble 1. The sleeve 3 is provided at a point between its ends with an annular ridge 7 which is formed thereon preferably by pressing the material of which the sleeve 3 is composed. An annular flange 8 is attached to the outer end of the sleeve 3 by means of rivets or other suitable securing devices. Between the flange S and the ridge 7 the sleeve 3 is provided with a series of longitudinally disposed parallel slits 9 which form strips.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the The strips formed by the slits 9 are flexible and their outer end portions are angularly disposed and spaced from each other. The flange 8 is secured to the angularly disposed portions of the strips and bridges the spaces between them.
A stovepipe section 10 is adapted to be connected with the sleeve 3 and the'said section is provided in the vicinity of one end with an annular ridge 11 which is formed thereon by means of pressing the material of which the said stovepipe section is composed. After the sleeve 3 has been inserted in the thimble 1 the pipe section 10 is connected with the said sleeve by inserting one end of the said pipe section in the sleeve whereby the ridge 11 may engage in and nest in the ridge 7 of the sleeve 3. As the ridge 11 is being inserted in the sleeve 3 it may move along the slits 9 whereby the slitted portion of the said sleeve is expanded until the ridge 11 engages in the ridge 7 when the sleeve 3 may contract and hence the parts are securely held together. After the parts have been assembled the flange 8 engages the end of the thimble 1 and prevents the escape of gas or smoke.
From the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that a stovepipe lock of simple and durable structure is provided, and that the parts of the device may securely I engage each other and prevent the escape of gases or smoke.
Having described the invention what is claimed is In combination with a thimble provided at its sides with slots, a sleeve insertible in the thimble and having clutch devices adapted to engage in said slots, the sleeve being provided at points between its ends with an annular ridge, and formed with strips extending from the ridge to one end of the sleeve and spaced from each other at their outer end, a flange secured to the strips and bridging the spaces between the ends of same and a pipe section insertible in the sleeve and having an annular ridge adapted to engage in the ridge of the sleeve,
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
,ROY BLAND MANNON.
