To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, WELLINGTON H. Kn)- nnn, a citizen of the United States, residing in Roosevelt, Long Island, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stands or Supports for Loose-Leaf Books. &c of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to devices of the general nature of copy holders, and is herein disclosed as an improvement on my copending application No. 871,229. filed November 10. 19M, wherein a stand for an Underwood Standard adding machine is shown as having a table leaf adapted to support work, and a book rack adapted to hold a loose-leaf book.

It is extremely desirable, especially in a crowded office, to have the machine take up as little room as possible when not in use.

his could be done by providing the stand with work supporting devices which could be lifted bodily from the stand; but in such a device the leaves of the book may be this placed or broken or soiled, which would cause a great deal of trouble and loss of time. In order to overcome these disadvantages, I attach the work supporting devices to the stand in such a way as to be out of the way when not in use, but still being attached to the stand. I may also provide means whereby the loose-leaf book rack may be brought into'position for use without bringing the work supporting leaf into position for use.

In bringing about these and other advantages, I find it advantageous to mount the book-rack so that it will swing on the stand. The work supporting table leaf may be mounted to swing on the book-rack from a horizontal position when in use to a dependent position when not in use, while a bracket mounted to swing on another part of the stand may support the leaf in its horizontal position. The parts thus mounted may fold together so that they occupy very little room.

The stand upon which is mounted a typewriting and adding machine, comprises a top portion 1, legs or supports 2, and horizontal brace rods 3 connecting the legs. The forward left-hand leg of the stand is provided with a lug lfast near the top thereof. Pivoted to this lug Al and bearing upon the upper face thereof is an extension 5 forming part of a loose-leaf book rack.

The book rack or container comprises a rectangular frame 6 formed by a metal strip, and U-shaped brackets 7 secured to the frame 6 and supported beneath the opening of the said frame 6. Rests 8 secured in the bottom of the U-shaped brackets 7 are adapted to receive the back of the book when passed through said open portion of the frame 6; thus the frame 6 and the rests 8 form a pocket which will hold the book partly open while resting with its covers against the two long walls of the opening in the rectangular frame 6. The pocket converges downwardly, due to the fact that the width of the opening in the frame 6 is greater than the thickness of the back binding of the book.

The front left-hand leg of the stand is provided with a lug 9 fast thereto near the horizontal braces 3. Pivoted to this lug 9 is a brace 10, which extends u wardly and is. fast to the outer side of the frame 6, and assists the extension 5 to support the book rack 6 in a horizontal position. The book rack and its brace 10 are pivotally mounted on the stand so that they may be swung in close against the side of the machine, (as V shown in Fig. 4) when out of use. In this position the rack will still accommodate a book, thus keeping the'book near the machine as is convenient, especially when the book is used a great many times at short intervals.

The work supporting device is provided with a table leaf 11 which may be swung into usable position adjacent the book rack, when the book rack is in extended position. The table leaf 11 is connected to the rear side of the frame 6 of the book rack by hinges 12 having pintles 13 fast to the leaf 11 bearing in the knuckles 1 1 fast to the frame 6 of the book rack.

The table leaf 11 is held up and supported in a horizontal position by a horizontally swinging bracket 15, which the operator swings into position when the leaf has been raised. This bracket 15 is provided with a horizontal arm 16 upon which the table bears, and a brace 17 which supports the outer end of the arm 16. The bracket 15 is mounted to swing on the stand by means of anupper lug 18, and a lower lug 19 fast on the rear left hand leg 2 of the stand. The arm 16 of the, bracket swin s on a pin 21 on the upper lug 18, while the brace 17 of the bracket bears on a pivot on the lower lug 19. The arm 16 of the bracket has fast thereon metal clamps 2O bellied out so as to receive and clamp resilient plugs 22 adapted to support the leaf 11 and soprotect the table against being scratched when 'the bracket 15 is supporting said table leaf.

In order to bring the parts into position for use, assuming that they occupy the position shown in Fig. 4c, the operator simply takes hold of the frame 6 and swings it forward; whereby the book rack is brought into position for use. If the operator desires to use the leaf 11 in addition to the book rack, said leaf 11 is lifted to horizontal position and heldL there until the bracket15 is swung to a positionnear the rear side of the leaf 11. The bracket 15 is prevented from swinging too far by the position of the lugs 18 and 19 which cause the arm 16 and brace 17 to abut against-the leg of the stand when swung out to proper position to hold the leaf 11. By returning the bracket 15 to its position close to the stand, and allowing the leaf 11 to drop to its vertical position, the book rack may be swung close to the machine stand as shown in Fig. 4; the parts will be out of the way but still accessible to the operator at a moments notice. It will be seen that when the parts are in this position, the leaf 11 will have its work face toward the stand, thus being protected against being scratched or marred.

The stand also includes the work supporting leaf 23 which may be pivoted on the other side of the stand in any desired manner. This leaf 23 is mounted entirely independent of the book rack or supporting leaf 11, and may be used with or withoutthe described devices, but formsa convenient support for a work sheet at the right hand of the operative.

Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention and portions of the improvements may be used without others.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. The combination with a work-stand, of a container mounted thcreon"to swing about a vertical axis from a position in which it projects outwardly from the stand to a folded position in which it :lies along the stand, a leaf mounted on said container to swing downwardly from a work-holding position to apendent position while the container is in said outwardly projecting position, and to swing with the container to a position lying between the container and the stand as the latter moves to said folded position,-

and disengageable means for supporting said leaf when in its work-holding position.

2. The combination with a work-stand, of a container mounted thereon to swing about a vertical, axis from a position in which it projects outwardly from the stand to a folded position in which it lies along the stand, a leaf mounted on said container to swing downwardly from a work-holding position to a pendent position while the container is in said outwardly projecting position, and to swing with the container to a position lying between the container and the stand as the latter moves to said folded position, and a bracket projecting from the stand beneath the leaf to support it in said work-holding position, said bracket mounted on the stand to swing to a folded position between the stand and the leaf as the leaf and container are folded to the stand. 7

3. The combination with a work-stand, of a container mounted. thereon to swing about a vertical axis from a position in which it projects outwardly from the stand to a folded position in whichit lies along the stand, a work-holding leaf hinged tosaid container to swing downward from a horizontal or work-supporting position to a pendent position, and to lie folded with said container along the side of said stand, and disengageable means for supporting said leaf when in its work-supporting position, said work-holding leaf when in its worksupporting position constituting means for preventing movement of said container to its folded position. v

4. The combination with a workestand, of a container mounted thereon to swing about a vertical axis from a position in which it projects outwardly from the stand to a fold ed position inwhichit lies along the stand, a work-holding leaf hinged to said container to swing downward from a horizontal or work-supporting position to a pendent position in which it may be swung with said container to its folded position along the side of the stand, and a supporting bracket for said leaf hinged to the stand to swing from a projecting position in which it under lies and supports the leaf to a folded position at the side of the stand, permitting the leaf to be swung down and to its folded position, said supporting bracket and leaf, when in work-supporting position, constituting means tending to prevent the leaf and container from swinging in one direction.

5. The combination with a work-stand, of a work-holder and a Work-supporting leaf, and means for mounting said holder and leaf in work-holding position adjacent to each other and extending outwardly from a side of said stand so as to be accessible for use from its front, said mounting means including hinged connections to permit said holder and leaf to be swung to a folded position along the side of said stand, with the holder still accessible for use from the front, but with the leaf folded out of the way between the holder and the stand.

6. The combination with a work-stand, of a support mounted on the stand near a front corner thereof to project outwardly from the stand, a work-supporting leaf extending rearwardly from the support in a horizontal work-holding position at the side of the stand, said leaf hinged to the support to swing downward and forward to a pendent position, and means for sustaining said leaf when in work-holding position but disengageable to permit said leaf to be swung to its pendent position, the support being hinged to swing about a vertical axis while the leaf is pendent, to bring leaf and support to a folded position at the side of the stand, with the work-supporting surface of the leaf facing the stand and protected thereby, said support comprising an open top worlecontainer.

7. The combination with a work-stand, of

a container mounted thereon to swing about a vertical axis from a position in which it projects outwardly from the stand to a folded position in which it lies along the stand, a work-holding leaf hinged to said, container to swing downwardly from a hori zontal or work-supporting position to a pendent position in which it may be swung with said container to its folded position along the side of the stand, and a supporting bracket for said leaf hinged to the stand to swing from a projecting position in which it underlies and supports the leaf to a folded position at the side of the stand, permitting the leaf to be swung down and to its folded position, said leaf when in its work-supporting position constituting means for preventing movement of said container to its folded position, and said supporting bracket and leaf, when in work-supporting position, constituting means tending to prevent the leaf and container from swinging in the oppositedirection.

8. The combination with a work-stand, of a container mounted to project outwardly from one side of said stand, a work-supporting leaf mounted at the same side of said stand adjacent to said container, and detachable means for supporting said leaf in its work-supporting position, the mounting for the leaf and container including means for shifting said leaf and container to a second position with the container lying alongthe side of said stand, and the leaf in a pendent position between the stand and the container, the container and leaf being accessible for use by an operator working at the stand when the parts are in their firstenentioned position, and the container being still accessible for use by an operator working at the stand when the parts are in their secondmentioned position.
