FOLDING SUPPORT FORFOLDING TABLES Filed Sept, '25, 1933 Patented May 14, 1935 -ATENT OFFICE Application September 25, 1933, Serial No. 690,904 In Sweden February 16, 1933 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to improvements in a folding table of a kind which is fixed hingedly to a wall and kept in its horizontal position by means of a support and the invention relates especially to such a folding support.
The inconvenience of folding tables of known construction is that the support takes up too much space if the table top is not used, that is to say if the same is in the vertical position, parallel to the wall.
This inconvenience is avoided with the folding table according to the present invention, as a folding support is used which is covered completely by the table top if the same is in the vertical position, and which support is kept in its folded position by a special arrangement described later on. By this arrangement the folding table can be used preferably in motorcars and the like with which care must be taken that the table does not take up too much space in the inoperative position and that the table top is also kept in this position.
An embodiment of the invention is shown on the accompanying drawing: v
Fig. l is a perspective View of the table in the position of use.
Fig. 2 is a front view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 shows the table seen from the back side if the table top is in the vertical position.
Figs. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 show details in a larger scale.
The table consists in known manner of a table top l, which is surrounded by a frame 2 and movably fixed on the wall by means of holding devices 3, so that the table top can be moved to the horizontal position in which position it is kept by means of a support, which is movably fixed with one end on the frame 2. The other end of the support is kept by a holder 5 fixed to the wall (compare Fig. l).
The support itself consists of two main parts, namely an upper part which consists of two shanks 66 fixed on the frame 2 by means of links 1-'! and of an arm 8 fixed on one end with the two shanks 66 whilst the other end of the same is in engagement with the holder 5 if the table top is in the horizontal position. As results from Figs. 2 and 3 the two shanks 6-6 form an angle of about and the lower ends of the same and the upper end of the arm 8 are connected by a bolt 9. The lower end of the arm 8 has the form of a fork in order to avoid the disengagement of the arm 8 with the holding device 5, which is provided for this reason with a projection Iii as shown in Fig. 4.
By the arrangement of the above described parts a support is formed which keeps the table top in the best manner.
If the table is to be brought into the folded position as indicated by arrow A, the arm 8 is 7 brought out of engagement with the holding device 5 and folded in the direction of the arrow B (Fig. 1) whereby it takes a position between the shanks lie-6 as indicated in Fig. 3. In order to keep the shanks 6-6 and the arm 8 in the position on the under side of the table top, U-formed clamps II are provided with which the parts are brought in engagement.
In order to keep the table in the vertical position, that is to say on the wall, the arm 8' is provided with a spring l2 which comes in engagement with the extension Ii] of the holding device. The lower holding device 5 may be so placed as to allow the extension in thereof to support the front edge of the frame 2 when the table is folded. In such case, holders 3 should be made vertically slidable as shown by Figs. 7, 8, and 9, in which T-shaped lugs H on the holders 3 may be inserted in bayonet slots [8 in bracket it. I
As mentioned before the table top is hingedly fixedto the wall by means of holding devices 3, one of which is shown in Figs. 4 and 5. Each holding device has an arm 13, the front part of which is provided with a hole M, the cross section of which corresponds approximately to the cross section of the frame part 2 of the table top. In order to keep the frame its position in the vided which is pivotally fixed to the: holder by means of a bolt and which arm can be moved in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 6.
part in hole It, an arm I5 is pro- It is understood that the invention is not 7 limited to the features as stated above. The shanks 66 can be fixed on another place of the frame 2 i. e. on the side parts, and the movable connection between the shanks 6, 6 and the arm 8 can be executed also in another manner without departing from the spirit of the present invention.
I claim:-
A foldable support for folding tables comprising in combination a frame, two holding devices hingedly connected at one side of said frame and adapted to be attached to a wall, two stays hingedly connected at one end one near each corner of the side of said frame opposite said holding devices, said stays converging towards the other ends, a central stay hingedly connected at one end to the convergent ends of said first mentioned stays, a fork on the other end of said last mentioned central stay and a support adapted to be fixed on the wall below and in a plane intermediate of said holding devices to engage said fork to maintain the frame in the horizontal position.
