IMPROVEMENT lN BEDPLATES FOR BOOT AND SHOE HEELING MACHINES,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,861, dated June 11, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
I, CHARLES L.'FRYE, of Marlborough, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Bed-Plates for Pricking-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l of the accompanying drawing represents a top view of my invention. Fig. 2 is v consists in so forming a bed-plate connected with a pricking-machine as to present an inward-slopin g edge or rim, and a less rigid surface than heretofore, to the action of the awl, so that when the awls are driven into the heel they shall take an inward instead of an outward direction, and thus prevent any injury liable to occur to the knives of the trimmers by coming in contact with the nails.
In the drawing, a to represent a portion of a frame connecting with a pricking-machine,
and provided with a bed-plate, 1), formed with channels 0- c, in which slide the outer beveled sides e e of a heel-plate, d, which is formed on its interior with beveled rims f f, sloping down from the top of the plate d to the bottom and forming an aperture, f.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The leather of the heel to be operated upon is placed on the heel-plate (1 over the aperture f, which allows the leather to be more pliable than if it rested on a firm base, thus inducing the awl to enter on the inner side of the plate 01, where, being directed by the inner beveled rims f f of the aperture f, it produces an inner slanting puncture, through which the nails are driven, thereby precluding any liability of the nails taking an outward direction and interfering with the operation of the trimmer knives. The plate dis made adjustable in and out of the channels 0 0, so that plates arranged for heels of different sizes may be inserted in its place.
Having thus fully described my improvement, What I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent,
A bed-plate for pricking-machines, having an adjustable heel-plate, d, sliding in and out of channels 0 c, and formed with outer beveled sides 0 e,inner-s1oping rims f f, and aperture f, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
