Description

A. OBERG, BOTTLE/STOPPER. APPLICATION FILED FEB-23.1917
l ,QQ78,3? B Patenwi fiept. 10, 1918.
WITNESSES INVENTOR ATTORN EY I AMANDA OBEEG, 0F HAGEE CITY, WIEzGONEIN.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented Sept. Ml, this.
Application filed February 23, 1917, Serial No. 150,550.
To all whom it ma concern:
Be it known tiat I, AMANDA Onnno, a citizen of the United States, residing at l'lager City, in the county of Pierce and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle- Stoppers, of which the following'is a specilication.
This invention relates to bottle stoppers and more particularly to a device of this character associated with milk bottle caps for providing a conveniently removable cap and sloop er for a milk bottle to thoroughly protect the contents of the same.
()ne of the objects of the invention is to provide a device of this character that may be attached to or detached from a milk bottle thus permitting the device to be interchanged when the contents of one bottle has been. used.
Another object, of the invention is to provide a hingedly mounted closure for .the top of a milk bottle and adapted to have detachably fixed thereto a. stopper of cork or fibrous material similar to the common expedient of a fibrous disk now generally employed in milk bottles, whereby the same. may be detached and a new stopper attached to the closure when continued use renders the original stopper unfit for further service.
The invention further aims to provide a device of this character that will include a latch for tightly holding the closure in engagement with the top of the bottle neck thus excluding the possibility of foreign matter gaining access to the interior of the bottle. 1
A further object of this invention is the provision of a bottle stopper which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordi- 'narily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantaand merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred, form of my invention, in which;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a milk bottle showing the invention applied.
Fig. 2 is a top plan.
Fig; 3 is a section on the line 53-45 oi Fig. 2.
F lg. 4 is an edge elevation of the device detached from the bottle.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5--5 of Fig. 4'.
Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6-43 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawing, wherein is illustratedthe preferred form of my invention, and in which like numerals of reference indicate correspondingparts throughout the several views, the bottle A is provided at the top of the neck with the usual annular bead B which forms the flange for the neck of the bottle. The top of the neck is provided with the anular recess C, in the usual inanner thereby forming a ledge D for receiving a suit-able stopper which is usually in the form of a disk of fibrous material.
Extending around the neck of the bottle and beneath the bead B is a retaining band 1 in the form of a'metallic ring constructed of a flat strip-of suitable material. Integrally formed with the upper edge of the ring or band 1 and intermediate the ends thereof is a tongue 2 that is curved to it around the bead B and the tern'iinal of this tongue is rolled to provide an eye for form inga part of a hinge 3. This hinge is provided with a pintle which receives the eye of the hinge carried by the closure cap l in the form. of a circular disk adapted to fit over and rest upon the topof the bottle neck. Diametrically opposite to the hinge eye formed on the closure cap 4: is a latch 5 which consists of an extension bent to lit over the bead B and to be depended to contact with the ends of the band 1. These ends 6 are brought together as clearly shown by Fig. 5 of the drawing and. are passed through the slot 7 formed in the terminal of the latch 5. This construction tightly holds the closure disk 4 in engagement with the top of the bottle and prevents accidental displacement thereof.
A suitable cork stopper 8 is mounted in the annular recess C and rests upon the ledge D. This stopper is fixed to the closure disk through the medium of a clip 9 which consists of a strip of suitable thin metallic material extended through slits formed in the stopper and also through slots 10 formed in. the closure disk l whereupon the ends of the strips are bent to lie in. engagement with the top surface of the closure disk therelay fixing the stopper to the disk and movable in this connection, it is pointed out, that the stopper 8 may be in the form of the ordinary fibrous disk now generally eml'i ,yed for the tops of milk bottles since, it is ()lH'IOllS, that should the stopper 8 become unaanitary it would be a simple matter to detaeh the same and fasten anew one in its place to the closure disk 4.
If it should become necessary to more assuredly fix the latch 5 in its proper operative position, theends (3 of the band 1 may be. bent over the sides oi the latch 5 as shown by dolted lines in Fig. ii thus preventing the latch from accidental displacement and 'ierinil'ting the bottle to be coi'n'eniently shipped without danger of the ca p becoming; lOUSOiKHl.
i roin the 'loregoing it will be observed that a ve'rysiu'iple and durable bottle stopper has been provided, the details oi which enila'idy the preferred form. I desire it to be understood hi'nvever, that slight changes in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
I claim:
' A bottle stopper comprisinga retaining hand having its ends turned outwari'lly to lie parallel in spaced relation, a closure disk hingedly connected to the band at a point diau'ietrically opposite, to said spaced ends, and a lateh carried by the, disk and having a slot to receive the said spaced ends when the disk is closed \\'liei'el y the said ends are held in contact, and the said latch main lained in operative position.
In testimony whereof I al'l'iX my signature, in presence of two Witnesses,
Mics. AMANDA OBER-G.
