DRAFT-RIGGING.
Application filed January 2, 1917.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, BnAnLsr S. JonxsoN, a citizen of the United States. residing at Chicago. in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new, and useful Improvement in Draft-Rigging, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference 1seing had .to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in draft rigging.
The object of the invention is to provide a draft rigging for railway cars wherein the parts are compactly arranged and a supplemental spring is employed in buff to increase the capacity.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical, longitudinal section of`a draft rigging showing my improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1 and taken on the line 2-2 thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sectional views taken on the lines 3 3 and respectively. of Fig. 1. In said drawings, 10#10 denote channel center or draft sills of a railway ear between which are mounted a front stop member A and a rear stop member B. The front stop member A is in the form of a box having side walls 11-11, upper horizontal wall 12,-lower horizontal wall 13 on which the butt 14 of the draw bar is adapted to rest` forwardly and downwardly offset wall 1G, upwardly extending flanges 17 riveted to the sills and outwardly extended lower flanges 18 secured to the lower flanges of the draft sills. At. the rear of the upper and lower walls 12 and 13. said stop member A is provided with vertically extended flanges 19 and 20 forming the stop shoulders for the front follower 21 of the gear.
The rear stop member B, comprises vertical side walls 22-22 riveted to the sills, a transversely extending rearwall 23, upper partition 24 having a portion thereof at the center upwardly curved as indicated at 25, and a lower partition 26. having the central portion thereof downwardly curved as indicated at 27, said curved portions 25 and 27 being adapted to form a pocket for a supplemental or auxiliary spring 28 which bears at its rear end against the wall 23.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1918.
Serial No. 140,067.
A5 clearly appears from the drawing. the 'rear wall 23 and partitions 21 and 2G are suitably braced by ribs. At their front edges, the partitions 24 and 25 are provided with upwardly and downwardly extending flanges 29 and 30 which form the rear stop shoulders for the rear follower 31 of the gear. Interposed between said followers 21 and 31 are vertical twin arranged springs 32 and 33, each spring comprising an inner and an outer coil. the inner coils being seated on bosses 31 formed on the inner faces of the followers. The springs are spaced by means of a combined spacing and limiting block o5 which is transversely recessed to accommodate a key 86 which slides in said recess and also in slots 37-37 in the sills. YThe followers and springs 32 and 33 are supported by means of a detachable saddle plate 38.
The draw bar is operatively connected to the main gear proper by a horizontal yoke 39 and coupler key 140. Said yoke 39 has the side arms thereof slotted as indicated at '-10 to receive the key 3G so that the latter moves in unison with the yoke and assists in limiting the movements of the gear. At
vits rear end, the yoke 39 is provided with a rearwardly extending enlargement 41 which slides upon and is guided by the horizontal portions of the partitions 24 and 2G of the rear stop member B. Said extension 11 of the yoke bears against the front end of the spring 28 and is thereby adapted to compress the latter in buffing movements of the gear. As appears from Figs. 1 and 2, the slots 42 in the yoke arms, which receive the compression key 140, are longer than the width of said key so that, upon inward movement of the draw bar, the latter and the coupler key 1110 will move for a limited movement without actuating the yoke. At the end of said limited movement, the coupler key will pick up the yoke and the latter will then compress the spring 2S simultaneously with the continued compression of the springs 32 and 33. This arrangement is provided in order to permit the use of a high capacity short spring within the stop member B which spring has a lesser travel than the springs between the followers. In this way the entire gear may be made very compact and at the same time a very high capacity obtained. In draft, it is apparent that the spring 28 remains idle and the shock is absorbed by the springs 32 and 33.
I claim:
l. As an article of manufacture, a rear stop member for railway draft riggings, said stop member being provided with side walls adapted to be secured to spaced draft sills, a rear wall, and upper and lower transversely extending walls forming a spring pocket open at the front end. said upper and lower walls extending horizontally at their ends to thereby form guides for a yoke and being curved intermediate their ends t0 form said spring pocket.
In a draft rigging, the Combination with a front stop member, of a rear stop member, said rear stop member comprising a hollow casting having upper and lower partitions forming` a spring pocket therebetween and a transverse rear vall', a spring within said pocket, followers coperable with said stop members, cushioning means between said followers, and a horizontal yoke having the rear end thereof extended into and engaging the spring in said pocket to thereby compress the latter under buff.
3. In a draft rigging, the combination with a front stop member having horizontal upper and lower walls, a draw bar having the butt thereof supported by the lower 'all of said stop member, of a rear stop member having upper and lower transversely extending partitions forming a spring seat therebetween and a rear wall, said rear stop member having upper and lower rear stop shoulders, followers eoperable with the stop members, cushioning means between the followers, a spring within said pocket, and a horizontal yoke eonneeted to the draw bar and having the rear end thereof slidable wit-hin the spring pocket` said partitions forming guideways for said rear end of the yoke.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 29th day of Dee., 1916.
