To all whom t ymay concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chazy, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, having invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft-Rigging for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft rigging for railway cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a draft rigging of efficient operation.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is aside elevation partly in vertical longitudinal section of a draft rigging embodying my invent-ion. Fig. 2 is a plan view partly in horizontal section upon line 2-2 of Fig. 1. a .cross sectiontaken on line 3--3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross sectiontaken on line of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the front follower. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a draft gear supporting cradle. Fig. 7 is a side elevation partly in vertical longitudinal section o|f a modification. Fig. 8 is a plan View artly in horizontal section of the same modi cation.
Referring to the drawings, the numerals 9-9 indicate draft members or parts of the car frame to which the draft rigging is applied, -10 a draft gear mounted between the draft members, 11 a draft yoke shown in horizontal position with its arms 12-12 passing on eitherk side of the draft gear. The
arms 12-12 are'provided with 4the transverse slots 13-13 at their forward ends for the passage of the coupler key 14 which extends through the slots 15-15 in the draft members and through the slot 16 in thedraw bar 17. The'slots 13-4-13 in the draft yoke are rearwardly extendedto permit the sliding of the key therein on rearward movement of the draw bar, and the slots 15-115 in the draft members are of sufficient length to permit thefreciprocating movement of the key 14 therein on the forward and rearward movement of the draw bar. The front stop members are shown at the numerals 1.9-19, the same being oppositely arranged between the draft members 9 and eachV being appropriately secured to its adjacent draft member preferably by the rivets 20--20. Each of the stop mem- Fig. 3 is 21 for the passage of a limb of the draft yoke, the said limbs being adapted to slide therein on movement of the yoke. A rear stop member 22 is secured between the draft members 9 preferably by the rivets 23-23, and is so positioned that when the parts of the draft rigging are in normal position as illustrated in F 1g. 2 of the drawings, the lrear connecting member 123 of the draft yoke 11 is adjacent the front face 24 of the said rear stop 22. The front follower 25 comprises a block 26 provided at its rear end with a preferably integral plate 27, the forward face 2S of the same being adapted to engage against the shoulders 29 of the front stop members 19. The block 26 is provided with means for entering the grooves-21 in theY front stop members, thel means illustrated herein being the lateral upper and lower [ langes 30 and 31, respectively. These lateral extensions from the block 26 enter the grooves 21 of the front 19 adjacent the limbs 12 of the yoke 11 and are adapted to ride therein on longitudinal movement of the front follower. Thus the front follower is supported by the front stop members through the medium of said lateral extensions upon the follower which enter the grooves 21 in the front stop members. The draftfgear 10 illustrated in the drawings comprises a shell 32 having springs 33 therein which -act in conjunction with the friction compression resisting elements including the friction shoes 34 and the spreading member or wedge 35. The wedge 35 is engaged by the rear face y36 of the front follower. A tie plate 37 arranged transversely of the draft members 9 is secured near its ends to` said draft members preferably by the bolts 23S- 38, and serves to support the draft gear supporting cradle 40, which comprises a plate 41 provided at its ends with the 11p-turned flanges 42-42J-which appropriately engage the draft gear, and is provided at its sides with the 11p-turned flanges 43 which are adapted to engage the sides of the draft gear. The said flanges are of a suitable height to be engaged along their upper edges 44 by the limbs 12 of the draft yoke 11. Thus the draft yoke is supported at its forward end by the coupler key 14, passes through the grooves 21 in the front stop members, and is supported near its rear stop members Fig. 6 thereof A draft members, which slots in the drawings also extend through the forwardly extended portions 46 of the front stop members 19; the butt.47 of thedraw bar 17 engages against the front face of the front follower, forcing the same rearwardly, its rearward movement being resisted by the compression resisting elements of the draft gear, the draft gear being held against rearward movement by the rear stop member.
On forward movement of the draw bar, the key 14 engages the-forward edges of the slots 13 in thedraft yoke 11, drawing the yoke forward, which yoke in turn draws forward the draft ear, the draft'gear being stopped at its orward end by the front follower, the faces 28 of which engage against the stop shoulders 29 of the front stop members 19. The space between the rear stop member and the shoulders 29 of the front stop members 19 between the draft members 9 is commonly known as a draft gear pocket, or ythat space within which the draft gear of the draft rigging is received. The grooves in the stop members 19 extend beyond and are outside of this pocket in the specific embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings.
In the modifications illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8, the numerals 50--50 indicate the draft members, 52 the front stop'members provided with longitudinal grooves 53 within which are received the lateral flanges 54-54 of the front follower, the front follower being provided'with the stop shoulders 56 which are adapted toengage against the stop shoulders 57 of the front stop members. The front stop members also receive in the said grooves the limbs 58-58 of the draft yoke 59. The said yoke at itsl forward ends is provided with the slots 60 for the passage of the coupler key 61 which extends through the draw bar 62 and at its endsv through the slots 63-63 in the front portion of the stop members and in adjacent portions of the draft members. A draft gear 65 is mounted in the draft gear pocket 66, the said draft gear being encircled by. the yoke and being stopped against rearward movement by the rear stop member 68 provided with a stop shoulder 69. A tie plate 70 is secured to the draft members preferably by the bolts 71 and has mounted thereon the draft gear supporting cradle 72 provided with the front and .rear flanges 73 and the lateral upright flanges 74 which engage it to the draft gear. The said cradle slides upon the tie plate 7() and is adapted to support the draft gear within the draft gear pocket between the front' and rear stop shoulders of the draft rigging.
The operation-of the modified form4 of invention, as illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawings', and the structure of said modification is the same as that illustrated in Figs. l and 2, except in' the particulars now to be mentioned: The draw bar 62 is prodraw bar shocks. The slots 63 in the draft members are longitudinally extended so that the rear ends 82-`-82 of the same stop the coupler key 61 simultaneously with the engagement of the limiting stop shoulders 77 of the draw bar with the stop shoulders 81 of the front stop members.
I claim:
1. As an article of manufacture, a follower block for railway draft riggings, said block having a follower portion proper adapted, on one side, to engage stops and, on its other side, to engage one end of a shock absorbing means, said block having also extensions on the first named side of said follower portion proper and arranged perpendicular to the latter, said extensions being adapted to slide within grooves provided in stop castings.
2. In a draft riggingv for railway cars, stop members and a follower, the stop members being lprovided with grooves without the draft gear pocket, and the follower having fianges entering said grooves.

6. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination with draft members, stop members and a yoke, of a front follower, the front stop members being provided with longitudinal grooves, the yoke passing throughsaid grooves, and the follower having lateral extensions entering said grooves.
7. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination with draft members, front and rear stop members secured thereto, and a draft yoke, of a follower, the front stop members having grooves for the. passage ofy the yoke, and the follower having supporting extensions slidingly mounted in said grooves.
8. In adraft rigging for railway cars, draft members, front stop members, a horizontal yoke, a follower and a draft gear,
the draft gear having lateral members to support the yoke, and the follower having extensions engaging with and supported .by the stop members.
9. In a draft rigging for railway cars, draft members, a draft gear associated therewith, a tie plate secured to thedraft members, and a draft gear supporting member slidingly mounted on said tie plate.

a draft gear'within the yoke, a tie plate secured to the draft members, a draft gear supporting member mounted thereon and movable with the draft gear, said member havin extensions engaging the yoke, the yoke eing supported by the key and said extensions.

In a draft rigging for railway cars, draft members, stop members, a draw-bar, a yoke slidingly secured thereto, a draft gear within the yoke, a draft gear supporting member associated therewith, said member having yoke supporting extensions, said member, gear and' yoke moving together on forward movement of the draw-bar, and all remaining stationary on rearward move-` ment of thedraw-bar.
15. As an article of manufacture, a follower having vertical portions adapted t0 engage stop shoul'ders,*said follower havin an extension from the front side thereof, said extension being provided with side flanges adapted to engage in' guiding grooves.
16. In a draft rigging, the combination with draft sills, of front stops secured thereto, a cushioning member, a horizontal yoke, and a front follower, said stops being prochannels and said follower havinga forwar extension slidable within and guided bysaid channels, the forward ends of said yokealso sliding within said channels on the outer sides of said extensions.
