Description

A. BRANDETTI.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 11. 1918.
Patent-ed Sept. 10, 1918.v
HLBERwB gwuenfoz DETTI UNTTED S Arne rn'rnnr nnron. I
ALBERTO BRANDETTI, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
WRENCH.
Application filed June 17, 1918. Serial No. 240,355.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERTO BRANDETTI, a subject of the King of Italy, residin at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and tate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In my Patent No. 1,161,287, granted Nov. 23, 1915, there is disclosed a novel wrench having a jaw that may be easily and quickly adjusted relative to a fixed jaw, the adjustment being accomplished through the medium of a rack on the adjustable jaw and a toothed end or sector gear on the handle of the wrench. Provision is also made for locking the adjustable jaw against accidental displacement.
The present invention is an improvement in connection with the wrench disclosed in my patent, said improvement residing in novel means whereby the adjustable jaw of the wrench may be released relative to its adjusting means, thus permitting of the adjustable jaw being completely removed from the wrench or quickly adjusted rela tive to a nut or other structure adapted to be gripped by the jaws of the wrench.
The improvement will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and
reference will now be had to the drawings,
wherein- Figure 1 is a plan of the wrench, partly broken away and partly in section;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the greater part of the wrench;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a detached crank pin adapted to form part of the wrench, and
Fig. 4 is a plan of the outer end of the wrench handle.
For the convenience of considering this improvement, I will designate the principal parts of the wrench, as shown in the drawing, similar to the principal parts of the wrench shown in my patent.
1 denotes a wrench head having a fixed or stationary jaw 2 and a transverse guideway 4. At the inner end of the head 1 are opposed segment racks 8 having alining openings 9 and 9, the former being of greater diameter than the latter, as best shown in Fig. 2.
l1 denotes an adjustable jaw having a shank 10 slidable in the guideway 4 of the wrench head 1, and said shank is provided with a straight rack 14:.
17 denotes a wrench handle having the outer end thereof provided with teeth or a sector gear 18, said handle being held in engagement with the wrench head 1 by a crank pin 16. The crank pin 16 constitutes the improvement in connection with my wrench, said crank pin having the ends thereof provided with eccentric alining heads or pintles 30 and 31 journaled in the openings 9 and 9 respectively, of the wrench head 1. The head or pintle 30 of the crank pin has a shank or nut portion 32 to facilitate adjusting the crank pin. The crank pin 16 extends through a segment shaped slot 33 in the outer end of the wrench handle 17 and with the crank pin in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it serves as a pivot for the wrench handle and maintains the teeth 18 of said handle in engagement with the straight rack 14 of the adjustable jaw, so that by oscillating the wrench handle the adjustable jaw may be reciprocated in the wrench head. By rotating the crank pin a half revolution the wrench handle may be shifted relative to the adjustable jaw of the wrench so as to move the teeth 18 out of engagement with the straight rack 14: of the adjustable jaw and permit of said adjustable jaw being completely removed from the wrench head or adjusted relative to the stationary jaw 2.
As in my former patent, the present wrench includes means for holding the pivoted wrench head stationary relative to the handle 17 said means including an exteriorly screwthreaded enlargement 19 on said handle, a locking member 23 having teeth 24 to engage the segment racks 8 of the wrench head 1, arms 19 on the locking member 22 extending into grooves of the enlargement 19, and a nut 27 adjustable on the enlargement and engaging studs 26 of the arms 22. By adjusting the nut 27 the locking member may be shifted relative to the wrench handle 17 and into and out of engagement with the segment racks 8 of the wrench head 1.
It is thought that the utility of my improvement will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawing there is illustrated one embodimentof the same, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended clalm.
What I claim is A Wrench comprising a head having a stationary jaw, an adjustable jaw having a shank slidable in said head and provided with a rack, a handle having a toothed end pivoted relative to the Wrench head and adapted for adjusting the shank-of said adjustable jaw by meshing With the rack thereof, the toothed end of said" handle havingv a segment shaped slot therein,a crank pin supported by said wrench head and'havmg its crank portion in the slot of said handle and pivota-lly holding said wrench handle relative to said head and adapted whenadjusted to shift to either end of the slot in the toothed end of said handle and move the toothed end of said handle into and out of engagement with the rack of said adjustable jaw, and means carried by said G'op1e'sof this patent may be obtaineditor five cents each; py addressing the (Commissioner of Patents,
