Description
L. PLElN/ -INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGHJE.
APPLICATION man FEBF'N, 1912.
IN V EN TOR.
WITNESSES I %.fl j'm BY 5/0 I HIJ'ATTORNEY. I v
LOUIS PLEIN, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
INTERNAL-CdMEUSTION ENGINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, 1918.
Application filed February 23, 1917. Serial No. 150,482.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS PLEIN, a subject of the Grand Duchy of Luxemburg, who have declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State'of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Internal-( o1nbustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements n internal combustion engines and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character capable of operating with great etliciency.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter de scribed and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a vertical section of an engine, embodying my invention,
Fig. 2, an enlarged section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3, an enlarged section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a suitable outer casing 4. having a crank shaft 5 mounted in the lowerportion thereof and a cylinder 6 in the central and upper portiol'i, as indicated. A piston 7 operates in cylinder 6 and is connected with crank shaft 5 by means of a connecting rod 8. One end {lot the crankshaft 5 is connected by means of a belt orchain 10 with a timer shaft 11 in turn connected by a belt or chain 12 with an'operating shaft; 13, traversing the upper radial T-slots 20, in the outer or upper ends of said valves, and corresponding members 21 on the inner ends of the rods 17, this arrangement effecting a simple and positive connection and one which may be assembled or taken apart. The valves 18 and 19 operate in a valve space 22 formed between an inwardly projecting cooled head 23 and the walls of cylinder 6, as shown. Valves 18 and 19 are semi-cylindrical in form and hollow, with the inner ends of the hollow portions opening into the cylinder 6. Valve 18 is provided with an annular intake port. 24 adapted to register with the upper of two intake ports 25 formed in the Walls of cylinder 6. Likewise valve 19 is provided with an annular port 26 adapted to register with the upper of two exhaust ports 27' formed in the walls of cylinder 6. A suitable spark plug 28 is arranged in thewall of cylinder 6, as indicated. I
The arrangement is such that at each intake the port 2* in valve 18 registers with the upper port 25 at the same time the lower port 25 is uncovered by the valve 18, thus permitting of the passage of the charge through both ports 25 into the cylinder 6. Likewise portv 26 registers with the uppermost port 27 when the lowermost port 27 is uncovered by valve 19, permitting of a double exhaust. By this arrangement free intake and exhaust are obtained thus insuring full charging of the engine and complete exhausting of the same. The arrangement is also such that. the force of the explosions in the cylinder 6 assists in the operation of the valves 18 and 19, thus tending to conserve the energy produced by theengine. The water cooled head 23 serves to keep the valves 18 and 19 properly cooled to promote ctliciency. The specific form and arrangement of the parts is a simple and efiicient one for the purpose.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrving my invention into effect, this is capa-' ble of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
llaving described my invention what I claim' as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An internal combustion engine, comprising a cylinder; a piston operating therein ports in said cylinder; and semi-cylindrical hollow valves operating in said cylinder, said valves being open at their inner ends
