Description

May 1927 G. E. BURSON INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE Filed Nov. 24. 1925 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 May 10, 1927. 1,628,027
G. E. BURSON INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE FiledNov. 24. 1925 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 [Luis-Ll inder 12 is caused to rotate by the crank shaft which is rotated by the piston rod It will be readily understood that any other mechanism can be employed for rotating the cylinder, but this mechanism is preterably operable by the piston rod so that the engine will be properly kept in time;
Any suitable timing.- mechanism can be employed for causing the tour spark plugs 35 to tire in proper order.
The operation of the engine is as follows: Referring particularly to Fig. 3. the pistons are in the extreme right hand side position. The port 38 on the right hand side of the piston 25 is opposite the inlet port 30, and fuel is drawn into the cylinder 12 between the piston 25 and the partition 23 while the piston 25 is moved toward the left. The fuel which was previously admitted to the cylinder between the piston and the closure 15 is compressed durine' this stroke. At the same time the piston an on the right hand side of the partition 23 is opposite 1ts exhaust port 33 and the burned gases between the piston 26 and the partition 23 are being discharged through it. The port :36 on the right of the piston 26 is opposite its spark plug 35 which is tiring at this instant so that there is occurringan explosion or burning of fuel between the piston 26 and the closure 14, lOlClllfl the piston rod 22 toward the left. When the piston rod reaches its extreme left position. the cylinder will have been rotated 90 deg. so that the port 36 which is shown on Fig. 3 as being opposite its spark plug just uncovering its exhaust port 3 3. The exhaust port 36 which is on the extreme lett hand end of the cylinder is uncovering its sparlc plug 35 and there is occurring an explosion between the piston 25 and the closure 15. forcing the piston rod toward the right. lhis nuwement of the piston toward the. right compresses the l'uel between the piston '25 and the partition 23. exhausts the exhaust gases between the piston 26 and the closure 14, and causes Fuel to be drawn into the cylinder from the port 29 to the space between the partition 23 and .the piston 26. During the second movement from the extreme right position to the left of the cylinder. the explosion occurs between the piston 2.3 and the partition 32?. the burned gases are exhausted from between the piston .35 and the closure 15. the fuel between the piston 2t and the partition 23 is con'ipressed, and tucl is being drawn into the space botween the piston 26 and the closure l t through the inletport During the second movement from the extreme left hand position of the cylinder to the right fuel is drawn into the space between the closure 15.
and the piston 25. the burned gases between the piston 25 and the part1tion 23 are being exhausted, the compressed tuel between the season? piston 96 and the partition 23 being fired and compression is taking place between the piston 26 and the closure 14.
By this construction it will be appreciated that the new internal combustion engine is of the four cycle type and that the complete device is embodied in a single rotatable cyl inder. l*urthermore, as the cylinder is com pletely surrounded by a water cooled housing. it will be ctl'ectively cooled and wear and heat will be evenly distributed.
It will be readily understood that any desirable lubricating system can be employed for luln'icatingz the moving surfaces between the cylinder' and the housing. the cylinder and the piston and the piston rod. Such lubricating system is preferably provided with a force pump for forcing the oil to the surfaces to be lubricated. which force pump is preferably driven by the crank shaft.
It will be understood that various changes may be made in the detail of construction without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
