Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFCE.
LEMUEL B. wHrrE, oF CINCINNATI, omo.
PORTABLE SODA-FOUNTAIN.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 1,278, dated August 9, 1839.
Y 1o all who/m, it may conce/m Be it known that I, LEMUEL B. Vi-Irrn, o-f the city of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Soda- Fountains, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
The nature of my improvement consists in a large orifice for the purpose of charging the fount. This orifice is covered with a metallic stopper or thumb-piece, on which is a male screw, as shown at a, for the purpose of screwing it into a socket, with a corresponding female screw fixed into the fount, and a flanch for the purpose of covering the collar or socket, as shown at b, b.
On the under side of the thumb piece or stopper is a cup or tube as shown at c, c, graduated so as to contain the exact quantity of powders or ingredients required for the fount. Through the center of the stopper is a small aperture, through which a movable rod (Z, CZ, passes, twice the length of the cup below. There is, at the lower end of this rod a male screw, onto which a plate is screwed with a corresponding female screw, covering the lower end ofthe cup, as shown at e. On the outside and upper end of the cup is another plate j', fastened on to the rod which passes through its center and this plate operates as a false or movable bottom. The rod passing up through the stopper has a knob with a male screw, as shown at g, there being Aa corresponding female screw in the top of the stopper, by means of which this knob is secured, when the rod is pressed down, throwing the contents of the cup at once into the fountain, which being filled with an alkaline solution or any other preparation desirable, secures with ease and certainty the whole effect of the ingredients used. Y
lhat I claim as my improvement is- The thumb-piece or stopper with the graduated cup attached (whereby the exact amount of the powders required for the fount is always known, thus removing all liability to mistake or the necessity of the scales) and the movable plates with the rod.J by means of which the powders are secured within the cup, thus preventing effervescence when put into the fount until the stopper is deliberately and perfectly secured by the screw, and then ejected at once into the midst of the fount by pressing down the rod, thereby rendering the whole process of charging the fount easy, safe, and effectual. Thus soda, mead, beer or any other drink may be carbonated without inconvenience, for which purposes this fount is intended.
The fount may be made of any suitable material, and of any desirable form for portable purposes.
LEMUEL B. W'HITE.
