BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, 1918.
Application filed April 18, 1918. Serial No. 229,295.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E.'BECK- WITH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Richmond, county of Chesterfield, and State of Virginia, have in- .vented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a full and clear specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an inexpensive box for holding tobacco, etc., the construction being such that the contents of the box may be readily'shaken or poured out through a discharge opening formed in the main fla at one end of the box, this discharge opemng being adapted to be covered by a supplemental flap, which latter may be opened and the contents of the box discharged.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a closed box;
Fig. 2 is asimilar view showing the supplemental flap open thus enabling the contents of the box to be shaken or poured out through the discharge opening;
3 Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view showing the parts in the position shownjn Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective viewbf a blank partly folded.
, In the drawing, the box a is made of a blank pa er-board scored-and folded and pasted su stantially in accordance with the usual method. The lower end of the box is permanently closed by theusual arrangement of flaps. The upper or dispensing-end of the box is provided withthe usual end flaps b and the usual side flaps c, which are adapted to be folded and tucked into the box in the usual way, as shown in Fig. 2; .that
is, end flaps b are first folded in and then the main flap 0 (being scored at d and e) is folded over and cross the top of the box and has its free end 7 tucked down in the end of the box against the outer wall.
At the side of the box opposite the side to which the main flap c is hinged, I extend the side wallof the box to form a' supplemental flap g which is scored at. h to enable the free end i of this flap to be readily tucked down into the box in position to lie against the opposite wall, as shown in Fig.
3, slit j being provided in the mainflap to enable this to be done. The opening j is a' slit rather than a slot, so that it will to a certain extent exert a -clamping action on the inserted end z' of the flap, and this slit 7' is formed coincident with the top edge of the side Wall of the box, so that the inserted end iv will lie close againstthe inner face of the wall of the box opposite the free end 7 I of the main flap. In the main 'flap is formed a dlscharging opening 70, this opening being in transverse almement with t e flap 9 so as to be covered by the flap when the flap is tucked in. This opening is in the form of a semi-circle, its straight edge extending lengthwise of the top of the box and'approximately in the center of the top wall. Its curved edge extends to the edge of the top at a point adjacent the hinge-connection of the flap 9, so that when discharging the contents of the box through this opening, the outward movement of the contents will be unobstructed.
whereby when the supplemental flap 1s folded over upon the main flap, it will cover the discharge opening and will reinforce and strengthen'the main flap. When the box is used for packaging smoking -tobacco for the retail-trade, it will beobsenved that the revenue stamp may be readily applied so as to seal the su plemental flap in its locked or closed position, so that the discharge opening cannot be uncovered without disturbing the stamp.
The nature and scope of the invention having been thus indicated and its preferred embodiment having been specifically described, what is claimed as new is:
A box of the character described having a flap hinged to one of the upper edges of the box and provided with a slit extending along the edge-fold forming the hinge and also with a dispensing opening located at a point between said slit and the free edge of the flap, said flap being folded along a line between said opening and its free. edge to enable it to be tucked down into the box along the Vertical wall opposite the slit, and,
another flap hinged to the top edge of the Wall opposite said slit and adapted to extend across and cover the dispenslng 0pening and to have its free edge tucked down .vertically into said slit and lie against the adjacentvertical Wall of the box. 1 I 10 In testimony whereof Ihereunto affix my signature.
WILLIAM E. BECKWITH.
